Let Their Spirits Dance: A Novel, by Stella Pope Duarte

Let Their Spirits Dance is the moving story of a family's journey across America. Thirty years after the death of the family's son and brother, Jesse, in Vietnam, the family has remained in many ways locked in a time of grief and pain. Having heard her son's voice, Alicia makes a vow to touch his name on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., and her decision inspires her warring children, along with hundreds of strangers across the country.

Stella Pope Duarte portrays a family struggling with the universal scars suffered by all who have been touched by death through war. In this powerfully evocative novel, Pope Duarte connects family, friends, and an entire nation with the names on the Wall, honoring the men and women who served in Vietnam as well as those who watched and waited, but never forgot.

From Publishers Weekly
A cross-country trip to the Vietnam Wall is the subject of Let Their Spirits Dance, Stella Pope Duarte's tearjerker of a first novel (Fragile Nights, a collection of short stories, was published in 1998). Elementary school teacher Teresa Ramirez is skeptical when her ailing 80-year-old mother hears voices telling her to make a pilgrimage to touch her son's name on the wall, but the whole extended Ramirez family and assorted friends set out to drive to Washington, making a name for themselves along the way. Duarte's narrative is meandering, but the density of the detail she packs in gives the novel emotional clout and historical depth.

From Library Journal
Duarte's first novel is an inspirational road book full of energetic Latinos exorcising their cultural, political, and personal demons. A fortyish schoolteacher, Teresa is failing at her marriage and is haunted by the memory of her beloved brother, Jesse, who was killed in the Vietnam War 29 years ago. One night, Teresa's mother hears Jesse's voice, which tells her to go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Then surprise, surprise she finds out that the government owes her $90,000 because it had mistakenly delivered her son's body to the wrong address. Despite poor health, Mrs. Ramirez rounds up Teresa, her other children, and friends and heads to the nation's capital by auto caravan. The press picks up on their junket and follows them through American towns large and small. As they near the memorial, the mother takes sick but not before meeting Jesse's Vietnamese wife, his son (raised in America), and his grandchild. Duarte's considerable talents shine in the entertaining travel sections, but red-flagged plot devices and an excess of cultural and historical apposition about Chicano history undermine the narrative's complexity and aesthetic enjoyment. Recommended for collections of Latino literature. Harold Augenbraum, Mercantile Lib. of New YorkFuentes, Carlos. Inez.

From Booklist
Thirty years after the death of Jesse Ramirez in Vietnam, his mother is convinced that the last words her son spoke to her in the airport have come true. He promised her that she would hear his voice again, and she--believing she has done just that--feels she must make a pilgrimage to the Vietnam War Memorial. The story of the family's journey in a ragtag caravan, consisting of the extended family and Jesse's old friends, is narrated by Jesse's sister Teresa. She remembers the joy of family life when Jesse was still alive and the sadness and pain that ripped them apart after his death. When their journey attracts the attention of a TV reporter, the resulting publicity brings them good news about Jesse's time in Vietnam, and the family is finally able to make peace with his death. Partly a political novel and partly a family story, Duarte's tale seems barely able to contain the welter of emotion that tumbles from its pages. Deeply felt and often moving, this is an impressive first novel. Joanne Wilkinson

A story of one family's involvement in the Vietnam War
By Ratmammy
LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE by Stella Pope Duarte
The debut novel by Stella Pope Duarte, LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE revolves around a Hispanic family's trip from their Arizona home to the Vietnam Wall, in a journey where they question themselves, their beliefs, and remember the family member they lost to the Vietnam War.
School teacher Teresa Ramirez has held on to the knowledge, all these 30 years, that her brother Jesse knew he was not going to return from the Vietnam War. On his departure at the airport, he whispers to her that he will not be back, and to take care of their mother. This memory haunts her when they get word six months later of his death while trying to help out a fellow soldier who was shot down. Thirty years later, when Teresa's mother Alicia informs everyone she has heard Jesse call to her, Teresa is more than just upset, and wonders if her mother is hallucinating or if her mother truly has these powers where she can hear from the dead.
Then, in a surprising turn of events, they are informed that because of an error made by the government all those years ago, Alicia has $90,000 coming to her because of Jesse's death. This seals the deal - Alicia informs the family they are going to DC to touch Jesse's' name on the wall. It doesn't matter that Teresa is being sued by her husband's girlfriend for assault, or that Teresa is waiting to hear about her soon-to-be divorce from Ray. Alicia says it will all take care of itself, and that they are all to go on this journey together. Alicia's health is in jeopardy, but she is determined to do this, as the last thing she may do on this earth.
Duarte tells the story with flashbacks, the point of view coming mostly from Teresa, as she remembers her childhood with Jesse and her other siblings Priscilla and Paul, happy moments as well as sad moments that continue to bother her into the present. She remembers her father, who was unfaithful to her mother Alicia, a man that Teresa had no respect for. She also remembers the stories she heard from an old Aztec medicine man, Don Florencio, who talked about the ancient Aztecs, their heritage, about dead spirits and other things that Teresa wants to believe are true.
While the first half of the book is filled with mostly flashbacks and helps set up the story, the second half details the journey that the Ramirez family and friends take, as they drive in a caravan of vehicles to their destination in Washington. They become the favorite of the media, thanks to the help of nephew Michael and his computer, even garnering the attention of President Clinton. Relationships are mended and created as the trip ensues, while more and more people join the caravan, and when they finally reach their final destination, it is a moment of sadness and remembrance as they embrace those that have left them.
This reviewer enjoyed LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE. The story of the Vietnam War and how it affected one family, as well as one group of people, the Hispanics, was eye opening. The ending was expected, yet it also was climatic in that one had waited so long for this journey to end. It was not truly a happy ending, but what made it happy was their realization that our loved ones are never really far from us, only separated by death. Teresa's story involved one's questioning of faith and religious beliefs, and reconciling one's past with the present. Her problems are resolved in a manner that surprised this reviewer, but it was a wonderful ending to her story as well as Alicia's journey in search of her son. Some readers may find the politics in this book to be opposite of what they feel, as Duarte does not hold back on her views of the war, told through the eyes of the characters in this story. Other than that, four stars for LET THEIR SPIRIT DANCE.

Score one for the teacher!!!
By Terry Mathews
Stella Pope Duarte's bio says she is a university instructor and a high school counselor. I'll bet she took a lot of writing and/or literature classes during her school years, because her debut novel is nothing short of a miracle, considering how publishers continue to release poorly constructed, poorly edited books.
From the first sentence -- "The passion vine bloomed until late November the year Jesse died."
-- until the last paragraph --
". . . No one knows if a spirit can balance on the point of a pin, or send light beams when we least expect. I looked down at the Wall. Light shone from it like a laser beam reaching us flying overhead. It's OK that I knew my brother wasn't coming home. I was supposed to. It got me to write this book, to tell his story to the world."
-- Ms. Duarte's elegant, mystical prose casts a spell on her reader.
Duarte weaves the story of a Chicano family torn asunder by the death of its beloved son/brother/cousin Jesse Ramirez during the Viet Name War in 1968.
Before he boarded the plane, Jesse promised his mother that she would hear his voice again. When she finally hears his voice one night, some thirty years after his death, she cannot rest until she visits the Viet Nam Memorial Wall to touch his name.
Jesse's family has not fared well since his death. One of his sisters, Teresa, is in the middle of a difficult divorce. Another sister can't find Mr. Right, although not from lack of effort. His brother is an ex-con trying to connect with his estranged son. His buddies who returned from the war have had their share of struggles, too.
Riding herd on this rag-tag group is Jesse's mother, Alicia Rodriguez. She alone has not lost faith and despite her fragile health and lack of money, she is determined to make the long trek to Washington to see the Wall.
I look forward to many, many more books from Stella Pope Durate. She's got all the skills necessary to teach us about quality writing and to entertain us for years to come.
Enjoy.

No apparent English version.
By G. Dominguez
I ordered this book thinking that it was written in English as are many of Villasenor's books. I received this book and realized that it was totally in Spanish. There was no indication from your review that it was in Spanish, therefore it was a total surprise. When I returned the book, I asked, in writing, for the English version, but did not receive anything more than a refund.

Brilliant!!!
By Elmo Lover
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Victor Villasenor's life. I can't say that I completely relate to the many things that he had to endure, but I've noticed that people from my parents generation still express themselves in such a way that you clearly see the repression that they went through during those times. "English Only, Espanol No" is not as prevalent as it used to be given that people "Latinos - including Mexican" have learned to appreciate themselves and culture/background, without fearing reprimand. It's just progress in my opinion. I completely agree with Victor Villasenor that a person that's limited to a single language is short-changing themselves. Knowing more than one language not only opens communication with others, but also our understanding and views in life. It makes us see and feel through other senses that we didn't know existed. I just finished the book and have recommended to at least 5 other people that ask me about it on my train ride to work. I loved it!!!

Poor tiny Birdie has no house. But Birdie does have friends.

Spike, Queenie, Goldie, and Fidget want to help Birdie find a house of his own. Birdie needs a house that isn't too tall and isn't too thin, that isn't too short and isn't too fat, and that isn't too wide and isn't too narrow. Will they find a house for Birdie before the rain falls and the wind blows?

A sweet and simple story about helping out a friend explains the math concept of capacity -- what will fit in a container of a particular shape and size.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1–Although this book is colorful, it misses its goal of helping children to understand capacity. A tiny blue bird searches for an appropriate house with the help of his feathered friends. Each one is a different shape: Spike is "tall, thin, and narrow"; Queenie is "tall, fat, and wide"; Goldie is "short, fat, and wide"; and Fidget is "short, thin, and narrow." As they explore a variety of homes, each companion finds a perfect fit for itself, but not for Birdie. In the end, the other birds build him a home that is just right. Some of the terms used to describe each bird are redundant. The author's goal is to introduce students to length, width, and height, but not all three dimensions are clearly differentiated. Additionally, "short and narrow" is reworded as "nice and thin," which jumps off the page as a value judgment after the narrative has used other descriptive terminology without any positive or negative interpretations. The simple cartoon illustrations are pleasant with endpapers covered by white outlines of a variety of birdhouses. The bright colors are attractive, and the text is accessible to beginning readers, but the explanation of the math concept isn't entirely successful.–Erlene Bishop Killeen, Fox Prairie Elementary School, Stoughton, WI

From Booklist
PreS. Murphy's latest title in the popular MathStart series uses a simple friendship story and clear, colorful paper-cut art to explore the concept of "capacity." As the weather becomes cold and wet, small Birdie needs shelter, and he asks his friends to help him find a house. They find a tall, thin, narrow house that's just right for tall, thin, narrow Spike. Then they find a tall, fat, wide house, just right for tall, fat, wide Queenie. There's a house to fit short, fat, wide Goldie and also one for short, thin, narrow Fidget. Finally, the friends make a house that's tiny all around--just right for Birdie. Preschoolers will enjoy the friendship story as they absorb the idea of volume and three-dimensional shapes, and adults who read this to kids will be pleased by the suggested activities at the end that will help children explore the concepts in everyday life. Great book for preschoolers about size

This is a great story for introducing size concepts and vocabulary to preschoolers. Distinctions among dimension words (tall, wide, etc.) are illustrated well in a meaningful context that young children understand.

Birdie gets a sex change!
By Duncan's mommy
A good book; my preschooler likes it a lot and understands the concept of different shaped birds fitting in different shaped houses. Nice idea about friendship at the end (Birdie's friends end up building him a house themselves). HOWEVER! I find it truly bizarre that nobody - not the author, the proofreader, the typesetter, the publisher, nobody - noticed that in the beginning of the book Birdie is referred to as "he" and by the end is referred to as "she"! Even my child noticed and asked "isn't Birdie a boy?" when I read the end to him! If not for this horrible typo, I would have given the book a higher rating...

Not even 1 star
By M.A.K.
Birdie has four friends, 2 male, tall and skinny-short and skinny and only take the house when Birdie refuses. 2 female, tall and fat, short and fat, who push the other bird aside to claim the house they prefer, even though the quest was for finding a home for Birdie. Sexist, much? Won't be reading this to any other children and might just lose it instead of returning it to the classroom library and buying a different book to replace it.

Mystic Horse, by Paul Goble

From the first brilliant rush of horses to the triumphant sight of beautiful bays, chestnuts, shiny blacks, whites, grays, and paints galloping across the pages, Paul Goble's very special book will delight all who love horses and all who love stories that tell of the spiritual connection between people and animals.

His magnificent, detailed paintings evoke an almost forgotten world as he recounts a stirring legend based on the oral tradition of the Pawnee. Focusing on a poor boy and his grandmother, adventure begins when the boy discovers an old, limping horse. Though ridiculed by his tribe, the boy cares for the horse and brings it back to health. In turn, the animal helps his friend achieve greatness, only to be betrayed. The boy's remorse is sincere, but will he be forgiven?

Captivating readers, Caldecott medalist Paul Goble shows how a loving friendship changes the lives of a people.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-Powerful, evocative endpapers showing surging horses, winging their way across raging seas and starry skies, draw readers into the spirit world of the Pawnee. With this opening, Goble brings to life the legend of the magical steed that gifted the tribe with "a herd of spirited horses." As the story opens, a poor boy and his grandmother struggle to keep up on foot as the rest of the tribe moves from place to place on horseback. One day, the boy finds a starving, limping horse and nurses him back to health, ignoring the jeers of others who insist he is wasting his time. In return, the animal gives him speed and cunning to spur his people on in battle. The boy, however, ignores the steed's final instructions and is devastated when the beloved animal dies as a result of his heedlessness. Later, he is forgiven and the stallion returns from the spirit world to reward his former benefactor with a herd of wild horses. Employing the same technique as in The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses (Bradbury, 1982), Goble uses the white outlines that are part of his signature style and marries traditional and stylized flat patterning with occasional shading to suggest rounded forms. By combining gouache and watercolor, he alternates areas of opaque and transparent color, evoking a sense of both airiness and solidity perfectly suited to the mystical and earthbound worlds depicted in this tale of generosity, bravery, and forgiveness. Extensive historical notes attest to the author's comprehensive research.

Gr. 2-3, younger for reading aloud. Adapted from a Pawnee story recorded in 1889, this magical tale tells of a poor boy and his grandmother who rescue a sickly horse. When an unnamed tribe attacks, the horse tells the boy to cover him in mud and ride directly into the enemy: "But do not do it more than four times!" When the boy attacks a fifth time, an arrow kills the animal. While in mourning, the boy sees the dead horse rise and head to the place of the spirit animals. Later, the animal returns with enough horses for the boy, his grandmother, and others in need. The ink, watercolor, and gouache paintings make full use of color, texture, and form, both in the minutely detailed naturalistic flora and fauna and in the exquisite abstract patterning. A lovely rhythm makes the story good for reading aloud, and the pictures will definitely stand up to repeated examination. Goble, who has studied Plains cultures deeply, provides clear notes and references to his work. GraceAnne DeCandido

Mystic Horse
By Hayseed9
Mystic Horse is definitely a child's book with lots of pretty artwork. Read it to four children ages 7 and under and they were quite taken, although I had to make sure they were understanding all the words and the story. Good book for parents to read to little ones.

Timeless story, beautiful illustrations will enchant horse lovers of all ages!
By Eclectic Reader
If you appreciated the stunning artwork and deep love of horses in Goble's Caldecott winning "Girl Who Loved Wild Horses," this is another "must-have" book. The book reflects Goble's deep research and admiration of Plains Indian culture, but it is the stunning art work and the timeless re-telling of tribal folklore in which a boy brings a horse back to life that will delight each generation who reads it. I often will give this book and "Girl Who Loved Wild Horses" as a pair as a gift for a special child -- or grown-up, horse-loving friend!

Mystic Horse tells the story of a poor young man who's kindness and love brings about a wonderful friendship with a horse. After getting a little too proud the young man's horse is hurt and he must deal with his guilt. As usual Paul Goble writes another story meant to teach a good lesson. I thought Mystic horse touched upon pride and keeping your word nicely.

The Dive: A Story of Love and Obsession, by Pipin Ferreras

The sea was our common home, and I felt our connection went back a very long way -- to a time that predated man's emergence from the water.

In 1996, Francisco "Pipín" Ferreras, a native Cuban and a world champion in the dangerous and controversial sport of free diving, met Audrey Mestre, a beautiful French marine biology student who had sought him out in Cabo San Lucas for her research. A passionate romance immediately bloomed between the two, and their love was bonded by a shared fascination with and devotion to the ocean. When the couple moved back to Miami, Audrey took up the sport herself and quickly proceeded to break the female world record (115 meters). They soon became free diving's power couple, testing the limits of their wills and bodies by descending to unthinkable depths, training and touring together, encouraging and motivating each other.

Then, on October 12, 2002, in a dive off the coast of the Dominican Republic, tragedy struck: Audrey's attempt to break the world record with a dive of 170 meters ended in her death. Suddenly, Pipín -- haunted by questions, reeling from the loss of his soul mate -- could no longer find solace in the sea that had always been his true home.

Now, for the first time, Pipín tells his story. He shares the heart-pounding adventure and fierce competition that fuel the sport of free diving and his own addiction to it. He addresses the controversy that has followed him throughout his career and that spun out of control after Audrey's death. And he relates the haunting story of his relationship with Audrey -- a unique and complicated tale of love and obsession taken to extreme depths.

From Publishers Weekly
Free diving champion Ferreras sums up this dangerous sport: "it all boils down to one simple, overriding question: How deep can a man dive on a single breath of air?" In the 1950s, such dives without tanks became fiercely competitive in Italy. The rivalry of Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca inspired The Big Blue, the 1988 movie that spawned mainstream interest in the sport. Amid this history, Cuban native Ferreras tells his story: "I grew up with the sea as my backyard." He defected to the U.S. in 1993, after breaking numerous diving records. On a trip to Mexico in the mid-'90s, he met marine biologist Audrey Mestre, who began dive training while their romance blossomed. Together, they produced a documentary TV series, expressed their love in tandem dives and married in 1999. "Audrey and I were happiest in that silent, mystical underworld, bathed in blue." That happiness ended with Audrey's tragic underwater death, and last year, Ferreras matched her 170-meter world record during a tribute dive on the first anniversary of her death. With fluid writing and vivid descriptions, this compelling autobiography explores emotional depths while detailing the sport's beauty, technologies, drama and dangers. 32 pages of color photos.

From Booklist
Ferreras is one of the giants in the sport of free diving, which involves plunging as deep under water as you dare to go, staying there as long as you can, and then rocketing back to the surface. Death by accidental drowning is not uncommon. In October 2003, the author matched the world record of 170 meters (roughly 560 feet) that had earlier been set by his wife, who died precisely a year earlier, while setting the record. This memoir is in many ways a classic love story with a couple of twists: man meets woman, falls in love, and introduces her to the thing he's dedicated his life to--the same thing that kills her. It's also a concise history of the sport of free diving and an introduction to many of its key participants. And it is, perhaps most of all, a story of a man's addiction to a lethal activity that has already killed the woman he loved. Sports memoirs are a dime a dozen, but this one stands apart. David Pitt

Beautiful Story/ Incredible Sport
By C. Hartman
I first read about this story several years ago in a Sports Illustrated article and was instantly interested in the sport, and this couple's story. The book provides alot of details/history on both, and includes a good deal of pictures. I thought it was a beautiful, tragic story. The sport of freediving is incredible, and of course carries risks, as do many extreme sports-which is why I think we are drawn to them. I loved this book.

Avoid it if you're just interested in SCUBA

I bought it thinking that it was a 100% SCUBA story. It resulted to be another thing.
Love, and someone trying to justify how a woman died, just one of the subjects...
The story is not bad anyway, but I would not recommend it.

Nelly in the Wilderness, by Lynn Cullen

Beans, beans, beans! Nelly Vandorn knows that trouble always comes in threes. And now that her ma is dead, and her pa has disappeared, Nelly is just waiting for the third trouble to come along.

When Pa finally returns home with a young city woman as his new bride, Nelly realizes she's just met trouble number three. Margery knows as much about the wilderness as Nelly knows about reading, writing, and schooling -- nothing. In Nelly's opinion, just about the only thing Margery is good for is looking mighty silly trying to be a pioneer woman.

But nothing seems to discourage her from trying to be a pioneer wife. Nelly can't decide if Margery is brave, or just plain crazy for sticking it out. Nelly has never expected much from life, but the longer she's around Margery, the more she begins to see that there is a world beyond her little cabin in the wilderness.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1821 Indiana, Cullen's (The Mightiest Heart) well-worn tale of a pioneer girl's hardships begins on a grim note and becomes increasingly dismal as characters wallow in their separate woes. Nelly, along with her older brother, is still grieving for their dead mother when their long-absent father, a trapper, returns home with a city bride named Margery. Appalled by her delicate manners and young age, the children make their stepmother's life miserable. The heavy aura of discontent overshadows potentially tender moments. When Pa comes in one day bearing gifts, a catamount pelt for his wife and a catamount kitten for his daughter, more trouble brews. Margery will not accept the fur ("How could I ever find happiness in something that deprived a creature of its life?" she says primly but illogically, considering her husband's work). Nelly, in turn, continues to give Margery the cold shoulder even when she helps save the kitten's life. Characters never do manage to connect with one another. It takes a tragedy to make Nelly realize her stepmother's virtues, and by then, it is too late for her to beg forgiveness. Readers may have trouble feeling compassion for any of the players in this colorless melodrama; while the author succeeds in expressing frontier stoicism and describing settlers' exploitation of animals, her writing here lacks subtlety and depth. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grades 4-6--After her mother's death, Nelly's father takes off and her only companion in the wilderness of the Indiana frontier is her brother, Cornelius. Forced to fend for themselves, the two gradually manage to get by, only to have Pa return with a new wife in tow. Margery is pretty, a citified person, and incapable of doing most of the daily chores. When John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) comes to call, Nelly begins to hope that he and her stepmother will take a shine to one another and take off together. Determined not to talk to the woman, Nelly gradually relents under Margery's gentle kindness and determination to make things work. The cover art tantalizes readers into thinking that the plot's focus will be the baby wildcat that Nelly clutches, but this is only one of many threads that float around Margery and Nelly's relationship. A rattlesnake bite and a measles outbreak in a nearby Indian camp add a sense of danger but the sense of time and place are not as vividly drawn as in some other frontier tales. When tragedy strikes at the end, readers are not prepared and there is no sense that Nelly and her family fully feel the effects. Far less realistic than Mary Jane Auch's "Journey to Nowhere" trilogy (Holt), this story has little to recommend to readers except a feisty heroine.

Gr. 5-8. Their ma said troubles come in threes, so 12-year-old Nelly and her brother, Cornelius, should have been forewarned. When their father disappears after Ma dies, Nelly believes him dead. So when he returns with a new wife, Margery, Nelly is hurt, resentful, and certain Margery is the third trouble. Margery seems wildly unsuited for the Indiana frontier of 1821. She has fancy clothes and outlandish notions that challenge the family's strongly held beliefs, and she can't perform the simplest housekeeping chores. Margery continues to try to befriend Nelly, but it's not until Margery is deathly ill that Nelly recognizes the woman's strength and kindness and finds the will to stand up to her prideful, narrow-minded father. In a fast-paced story sure to catch readers who like historical fiction, Cullen creates a capable, headstrong heroine as she delivers a surprising amount of information about life on the early American frontier. Unappealing main character; weak plot
By William P. Sherwood
In the spring of 1821, young Nelly Vandorn had already experienced her share of trouble on her Indiana homestead. Her Ma had recently died and immediately following that tragedy her Pa had mysteriously disappeared. However, Nelly remembered, "Ma always said that trouble comes in threes." The third trouble, in Nelly's mind, arrives one spring afternoon when her Pa returns with his new bride, Margery. Nelly and her brother Cornelius cannot imagine that Margery, who is from Pittsburgh, with her fancy clothes and big city manners will ever make it in the wilderness and are determined not to treat her like kin. Cullen has attempted to create a protagonist who is strong and determined in the face of tragedy. Unfortunately, for the majority of the book, Nelly comes off as ignorant, hateful, and cruel. She despises books, hates the local Indians, disdains a neighbor because he is different, and makes Margery's adjustment to wilderness life much more difficult than necessary. Margery, however, is clearly not suited for wilderness life. At one point she leaves a pot of honey outside because she hopes to attract a bear and admire his "very stately walk." She is oblivious to the threat such actions represent for her new family and the livestock. The other two characters, Pa and Cornelius, are fairly colorless and seem to be merely plot devices to move the story along and highlight the conflict between Nelly and Margery. Near the end of the book, Nelly finally comes to appreciate Margery's good qualities after another terrible tragedy, but it is difficult to accept the sudden transformation in Nelly's attitude and character. Despite the disappointing characters, the book explains various elements of frontier life, including the challenges of finding/growing food, the danger animals represent, and the difficulty of simple tasks such as doing the laundry. However, these details do not compensate for the book's mediocre characters and story.

My favorite book - by Andy Szoke age 8
By Loribell85
If you love country citizens, you may find yourself in a dimly lit room reading this brilliant book, page by page. I skipped some sentences in other books, but I dare not skip a character on this book `cause if I did, I would have find myself hitting my head.
My favorite part of the story is when Nelly recives Baby, a cantamount. If you are asking what a cantamount is, It looks like a baby tiger. If you look on the cover, nelly is carrying it.
Yes, there are some sad parts, but many MANY joyful and happy emotions too.
This masterpiece made my heart do about 1,000 sumersaults and 15 butterflys floating in my stomach.
How I long to read it again!!!!

Nelly the meanie
By Fantasy fan
None of the characters in this book seem to have any depth, or any personalities, except for Margery. I feel sorry for Margery, but then again she was a dimwit to marry the guy in the first place. Nelly is isolated from civilization, and she seems to despise everyone, except for critters. She's so bitter because she's never been in a different environment other than the wilderness, where the law of nature says only the strongest survive. Which results in her turning mean, selfish, and bitter, in order to scramble over and trample everyone and everything to reach the top of the doggie pile.

The end of the book didn't seem like an end, it needed at least five more chapters, or a sequel.

I found the book to be incomplete, the characters shallow and bitter and the plot to be nonexsistent. The negatives far outweigh the positives. I don't know what possessed the auther to write such a horrible book. If it was possible I would give this book 0 stars. Major yuck!!

Life is good for Oscar Westerwit. He's the mayor of Central Park -- the greatest place on earth for the squirrels, chipmunks, mice, and other animals who live there. He's the shortstop and manager of his baseball team. What could be bad?

Plenty! Big Daddy Duds, jewel thief, all-around thug, and leader of rats, is about to take over the park. And when he does, the other animals who live there will be turned out of their homes. Everyone looks to Oscar to save the day, but he may not even be able to save himself. . . .

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. Avi reinvents himself with every book, and this lighthearted venture is no exception. The time is 1900; the place is New York City's Central Park; the protagonist is a dapper squirrel named Oscar Westerwit, who is the locus of sociability and the manager of the Central Park Green Sox baseball team. Unfortunately, trouble's a-brewin' with the team. Oscar's star pitcher has gone missing, and an army of rats, led by the nefarious Big Daddy Duds, has invaded the park and cut down the tree where Oscar's mother lives. Twinned to this plot is the story of Duds' sweet, sassy daughter, Maud, who leaves the family home to find a better, more wholesome life as a nurse. Oscar tries to save the park from the rats, Maud and baseball help serve up the thrilling denouement, and the whole thing is written in delicious period slang ("youse" and "dear boy" and "this ain't too half bad"). A quick, fun period piece. GraceAnne DeCandido

A kids review!

I like chocolate, but we're talking about books. The Mayor of Central Park is a great book. I recommend this book for people who like talking animals. It's about rats taking over central park. Oscar the squirrel is trying to prevent that from happening. My favorite character is Big Daddy Duds. He likes diamonds. All the other characters are animals too.

My favorite part is the big baseball game. The characters changed a lot. For example, Arty the pitcher, changed into a Hollywood star.

The book is well written. The author is good at surprising you. I loved this book.

Fun read aloud for elementary students
By Katy Scott
I just finished reading this book with my homeschooling first grader. We both really loved the book - in fact, he liked it so well that he kept "sneak reading" chapters when we weren't together, because he couldn't wait for the next chance for us to read it. He read the whole second half of the book without me but still liked it well enough to listen to me re-read those chapters with him as well. This book is such a gem, I can't believe I haven't discovered it until now. The characters are memorable, the concept is fun, and the dialogue is spot on. Best of all, this book had more colorful language and fun analogies than any book that I remember reading. We often ended up laughing out loud at the unique phrases and expressions, and we found many opportunities to stop and discuss what a certain phrase might mean. I will definitely return to this book when my younger children are old enough to appreciate it. It is such a fun read!

fairly good story
By Melissa Sack
The setting of this book takes place in 1900. The main character in the book is Oscar Westerwit, a squirrel who loves baseball and Broadway musicals. He heads up a team of animals to over come a gangster rat named Big Daddy Duds who ties to bring trouble to the park area. Find out if their plan works in The Mayor Of Central Park!

The book was easy and fun to read.

The characters in the book are animals. Children enjoy animal stories most of the time.

Review
"For honest readers and open-minded seekers of other cultyres and for Black folks of all persuasions,For Every Season is a must-read." -- Haki Madhubuti, author ofBlack Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous?

From the Publisher
African traditions are a growing part of Black culture and are especially significant to young people seeking a link with their heritage. In For Every Season, Barbara Eklof reviews the ceremonies of ancient Africa and America during slavery that surround the four major passages of the human experience: birth, adolescence, family bonds (including weddings and family reunions) and death. She describes how today's African-Americans can add meaning and substance to their lives using her step-by-step, detailed plans for incorporating these traditions into their modern celebrations. For example, she guides readers through the process of blending Western and African traditions in a wedding ceremony; provides instructions for creating Afrocentric birth announcements; and presents a prescription for a contemporary funeral that incorporates the ancient customs of Egyptians, West Africans and Ethiopians.

Inspirational and down-to-earth, For Every Season is for all African-Americans who would like to celebrate their cultural heritage and their present-day bonds.

About the Author
Barbara J. Eklof speaks regularly to corporate groups, women's groups, and school and church groups. She lives in Ellenwood, GA.

At last, a book that surpasses information on the joys of Kwanzaa and Black History Month and shows us how to incorporate our heritage into every celebration and holiday throughout life--all year long. My favorite planners--the Mamato Baby Shower, ethnic birthday parties, cultural weddings, adolescent rites-of-passage, and family reunions. Amazon.com Review
Want to learn about meat? Really learn? Then How to Cook Meat is your book. In great and enjoyable detail it explores beef, veal, lamb, and pork--which cuts to buy, what cooking methods suit each, how to judge doneness, and much, much more. Authors Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby, responsible for the bestselling Thrill of the Grill, also provide more than 200 explicit recipes that comprise a wide range of dishes, from prime-rib roasts to hearty stews, lamb-shoulder braises to grilled pork fillets--and they even cover innards and specialty cuts such as ham hocks. It's hard to imagine a meat lover who wouldn't benefit from this comprehensive yet approachable investigation.

Staring with illuminating notes on butchering and meat grading, the supermarket versus butcher meat-buying issue, and other related matters, the book then provides ample notes on cooking techniques. Recipes for the major meat types follow, organized usefully by cut size and tenderness; these treat the most melting cuts, which can stand quick cooking, to the tougher (though often more flavorful) ones that demand braising or stewing. Particularly attractive recipes include Sage-Rubbed Roasted Loin of Beef with Shallot-Bourbon Sauce; Veal, Sausage, and Fava Bean Stew with Lemony Greens; and Traditional Dry-Rubbed Saint Louis-Style Pork Spareribs. With additional recipes for the likes of hash browns and rice, beans, and vegetable sides, plus useful tips, nomenclature, and substitution notes, the book is a real addition to the kitchen library, though it won't remain shelved for long. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
Here is a well-rounded and wonderfully thought out bible of beefsteak. Schlesinger and Willoughby (The Thrill of the Grill, License to Grill, etc.) begin with a single premise: that it is imperative to match the method of cooking to the cut of meat you have at hand. Dry heat, like grilling, is choice for the more tender cuts while moist heat, like stewing, is best for the tougher stuff. This holds true for beef, veal, lamb and pork, all of which are represented in their own in-depth sections. With this dictum, the authors go off on a fascinating tour of all things carnivorous. The lengthy and highly instructional introduction delves into such minutiae as how fat stimulates our salivary glands to produce the sensation of juiciness. Then come the more than 200 recipes. The beef chapters run the gamut from a joy-of-gnawing dish called Flintstone-Style BBQ Beef Ribs with Hot, Sweet, and Sour Bone Sauce to a Kuala Lumpur-inspired Gingered Beef Stew with Red Onion-Lime Sambal. And the lamb section includes not only the domesticated Double-Thick Lamb Rib Chops with Slicked-Up Store-Bought Mint Jelly Sauce but also North African-Style Braised Lamb Shanks. Nothing goes to waste since the authors employ a surprisingly large number of offal recipes. There are, of course, a basic sweetbread and calf brains, but these shy in comparison to Lamb Tongues on Toast and the virtually unmentionable Head Cheese Reuben. Most every recipe is accompanied by useful sidebars that detail the cut of meat to use, offer alternative cuts and even tell you how the dish holds up as a leftover. With humor, clarity and expertise, these two renowned food writers have created a requisite text for any serious meat lover. (Oct.)

Essential Reference for Making Meat More Interesting
By B. Marold
This is the easiest type of cookbook to review because it is simply the most useful type of cookbook to have, so if you find anything which detracts from the books utility, it is a sure sign that the book is not up to snuff. The fact that the two authors are recognized experts on their subject makes the job even easier, because it generally means you can sit back and take their advice with the assurance that they know what they are talking about. These are not two interior decorators who write cookbooks as a sideline. One thing to beware of regarding the authors' reputations is that unlike their earlier books, this book is not exclusively about grilling meats. In fact, grilling is a relatively minor part of this book.
By `meat' the authors mean the flesh of domesticated cattle, sheep, and pigs. This follows the conventions of almost all other cookbook authors I have read. It does not mean flesh of fowl, rabbits, or game such as venison. One advantage of this distinction means that many methods useable for one `red meat' animal can often be used for a similar cut of meat from another red meat animal.
The main object of the authors in writing this book is to deal with the fact that while eating a large amount of meat may lead to ingesting an excessive quantity of undesirable fats, eating a reasonable amount of meat provides a high amount of complete proteins essential to human nutrition. The object, then, is to make these reasonable portions as desirable as possible to eat. One result of this objective is to make as wide a range of meat cuts accessible to the home cook as possible. Limiting oneself to steaks, pork loin, and lamb chops will not only become dull after a while, it is also expensive.
An important insight from the authors is that the cost of a cut of meat has nothing to do with the (food) value of the cut. In fact, many writers have claimed that most of the less expensive cuts are actually the most flavorful. I think it is fair to say that the cost of a cut of meat is inversely proportional to the amount of time and effort required to convert the meat into a tasty dish. While an eight dollar a pound fillet can be sautéed and pan roasted in 20 minutes, a three-dollar a pound cut of chuck may take two hours to brown and braise. The reward, however, is that the braised chuck will taste great the next day without any help while the cold beefsteak may need some help to be appealing.
My favorite part of this book is the fact that I share with the authors a love of lamb. This means the authors have devoted a sizable portion of the book to recipes for various cuts of lamb, conveniently divided into a number of chapters based on the types of cooking methods most appropriate to the lamb primal.
The first such chapter deals with the large tender cuts of lamb. This includes the very expensive rack of lamb, the crown roast, bone in and butterflied leg of lamb, lamb saddle, lamb loin and a shoulder roast, prepared in a fashion very similar to the leg of lamb methods.
The second lamb chapter presents recipes for large tough cuts of lamb including lamb shanks and two recipes for braised or barbecued lamb shoulder (you didn't think you could keep these guys away from the barbecue for the whole book).
The third lamb chapter is for small tender cuts such as loin chops, rib chops, lamb tenderloin, leg steaks, and Denver Lamb ribs. This chapter concentrates on grilling techniques for lamb, especially for lamb on skewers.
The fourth chapter is my favorite, after roasted leg of lamb, in that it gives stewing and braising recipes for small tough cuts of lamb. This includes Irish stew, Shepherd's pie, and curried lamb dishes.
The last chapter on lamb has two recipes from `the fifth quarter' otherwise known as offal. It has a recipe for lamb kidneys and lamb tongues.
Between this book and constant harping from my hero Mario Batali, lamb shoulder has come to replace leg of lamb as my favorite lamb cut. They have convinced me that it has better flavor while being substantially less expensive. I have also discovered that it is becoming much easier to find than it may have in the past. Check out farmers market butchers.
In addition to excellent recipes, the book offers general tips on various cooking methods and many tips for making requests of butchers to have them do some of the hard work in preparing the meat for the pot. When roasting a shoulder, I would recommend asking the butcher to fillet the shoulder after it is weighted for sale and give you the bones separately to make lamb stock. Speaking of stocks, this book gives no recipes for them, which I actually consider a plus, as there are more than enough good books with excellent stock recipes. No sense taking up space here for a well-worn subject. Check out Judy Rodgers Zuni Café cookbook for the best stock recipes I've ever seen.
I always look here first when I want a recipe for lamb or veal or pork or beef. It not only gives me the right stuff on what to look for at the butcher, but also how to get the best value from what the butcher can do for me.
This book is highly recommended.

All-Star Work on Meat
By rodboomboom
This is truly a magnificent compendium on meat: from beef to pork to lamb and veal.
They do a thorough job of explaining where the cuts come from and the proper cooking techniques to use on each individual cut. On top of this, there is just an outstanding section on how to communicate with one's butcher, be it from a supermarket or specialty butcher store. Also, pictures on given on each cut so that one can know what you're looking for when shopping.
The recipe sections are by cut, and they are plentiful and very creative. I would not describe the majority as requiring the "too hard to find ingredients or techniques that are difficult." These are unique, solid recipes, such as the ones tried so far: a Basil-Crusted Meat Loaf with Brandy, Walnuts and Spicy Wine Tomato Sauce (this is superb, and makes heavenly sandwiches);Lazy Sunday Pot Roast with Caraway and Green Apples; Fennel-Crusted Flank Steak with Orange=Black Olive Relish and Spicy Mint Honey;Grill-Roasted Bone-In Leg of Lamb with Grilled Peaches and Red Onion-Cilantro Salsa;Hoisin-Glazed Grilled Pork Blade Chopes with Spicy Korean Vegetables.
What is unique also is that with each recipe there is included: "Other Names," "Other Cuts You Can Use," "ButcherSpeak" and my favorite: "Cook Once,Eat Twice" which provides advice on the delicious leftovers.
This is so well thought out, researched and presented. On top of all this, the recipes are so creative and excellent and turn out as listed. Not every recipe has a color photo, although there is a sufficient number of color shots in the middle insert.
Just the best resource on these meats I have found. All chefs really into it will enjoy using this reference.

How to buy and prepare cuts of meat
By Midwest Book Review
How to Cook Meat is written for the home cook who isn't sure how to buy and prepare cuts of meat: it provides over 250 recipes for meats and includes guidelines on how to use a variety of cuts from everyday meats to more unusual features. An excellent introductory section discusses the cuts, meat grading, and storage and preparation while the bulk of the book is packed with recipes. If only one meat cookbook were to be in a home collection, this should make the grade.
