At the outset of this superb guide to cooking uncomplicated vegetarian fare, Berley asks a rhetorical question: "Stylish, sophisticated, home-cooked meals without a fussâ€"is that too much to ask for?" If this cookbook is any indication, it isn't too much to ask for; in fact, it's a very simple request that Berley happily fills. The former executive chef of New York's Angelica Kitchen and chef and co-owner of the city's Miette Culinary Studio lays out healthy, quick meals requiring minimum effort. He divides the book by season and gives 12 menus for each. In a minimalist style reminiscent of Mark Bittman's, Berley describes key ingredients to keep in the pantry (herbs, grains, beans, oils, etc.) and important tools (he's particularly fond of the pressure cooker). As the title suggests, the recipes draw on seasonal produce; Berley reminds readers that buying vegetables in season will save money and ensure the best quality. Each menu consists of at least two dishesâ€"a main course and a sideâ€"and some include a third accompaniment or appetizer. Although simplicity reigns, the dishes do encompass a variety of ethnic cuisines, including Asian, Caribbean, Italian and Mexican flavors. Berley gives a brief intro to each dish (e.g., before giving the recipe for Wild Mushroom Fricassee over Farro, he explains what farro is and how to cook it; he also makes a case for saving some Rhubarb Crisp for the next day, since "leftovers are great for breakfast; just substitute yogurt for the whipped cream").

Amazingly simple & elegant!

I received this book as a gift and immediately put it to use for father's day. I made the cold avocado w/ lime and jalapeño soup to start and seared tofu w/ black beans & mango salsa as the main dish. They were really both fantastic, and even my extremely carnivorous father was pleased! The meals are very quick and yet are slick and sophisticated. The book itself is gorgeous, and Peter Berley did a very interesting thing with the organization, where it is organized seasonally into menus. Whats so nice about this is that it makes making an entire meal even easier because you are given the ingredient list for everything (in addition to individual recipes), and a "game plan" for what to do and in what order. Fabulous book!

Delicious, convenient and fun!

I love this cookbook! I'm a pretty good cook who likes to make good food...but does NOT have hours to do it. Berley explains that although he is a professional chef, when he cooks at home, he takes the express route--and that's what these recipes are.

As mentioned in other reviews, the cookbook is organized by seasons. Within each season are 12 menus of two dishes that can be made within an hour. (Desserts are included at the end of each section.) Plus each menu includes a shopping list and a "game plan" with a suggested order of cooking. I have most of the ingredients (eg onions, oil, basic spices) in my kitchen already, and it doesn't take too long to make a brief stop at the market and pick up the 5-8 ingredients I don't have. Plus cooking the menu itself doesn't take longer than an hour. Since these menus are for 4 and I'm cooking for 2, these recipes usually provide at least one more meal.

The other thing I like about this cookbook is that, because I "trust" the recipes and have found a number of them to be very good, it has encouraged me to try ingredients I don't use too often--such as delicata squash, masa harina, or quinoa.

Important note: it would be easier to use this cookbook if you have access to a grocery store with a variety of items, such as the ones I mentioned above. If you don't have these ingredients nearby, you may have to get creative about getting them, or make substitutions.

Best Cookbook I've purchased in recent history

Wow. This is the greatest cookbook I've purchased in a long time. The book is beautiful to start, gorgeous photos, pleasant layout and high quality paper and binding.

The book is designed in four sections, one for each season. Each season has 12 "menus", each menu containing 2-3 recipes for dishes that go well together. Each season also has it's very own dessert section as well.

A great feature of the book is that every menu starts with a shopping list (divided by food category) and a game plan. The game plan helps you organize what order you cook the 2-3 recipes in so that everything is ready at the same time.

As if that isn't enough, the recipes are varied and interesting. They are also relatively simple. So far I've made the Balsamic Roasted Seitan with Cipollini Onions with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Parsnips and a crunchy cabbage salad (winter menu #4), Tomato and Goat Cheese Strata with Broccoli Rabe with balsamic brown butter (winter menu #10) and Caramelized bananas with blood orange and pistachio (winter dessert #3). They were ALL delicious and fairly served 4 people as they stated.

It's worth pointing out that even though this is a vegetarian cookbook I am not a vegetarian. I was just looking for interesting ways to cook vegetables that are in season. The meat substitutes were delicious and some of my other carnivore friends also commented that they were suprised.

I'm delighted with this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Good, but a little misleading

This book is a good resource on typographic experimentation, with well-sized images that are clear and in-focus and it is a welcome addition to my bookshelf.

Interesting

This book is an interesting overview of how the Claritas system of neighborhood clustering works. It was published in the 80s, and the details and demographics are far outdated at this point in time. So don't get this book for the specifics (of which, there are chapters and chapters), but rather for the broad explanations, which are still useful.

This book forever changed how I understand American society and culture. The book was published two decades ago but structurally it is still relevant today. Geodemographic analysis allows the lifestyle, personality, politics, education, consumption of a person to be analyzed by their ZIP+2 code. You are similar to your neighbors. And people in similar ZIP+2 cluster, though living in a different metropolitan area, will have more in common with you than people in a differing cluster type who live in an adjacent ZIP to you. The data is taken from everywhere: credit cards, voter polls, car registration, consumer participation cards, magazine subscriptions. It can be fun to try to overlay your own impressions of peoples you have met against the 50+ clusters. Which one are you in?

Best known for her book A Return to Love and her commentary on A Course in Miracles, Marianne Williamson now turns her attention to children. In an epilogue to parents, she writes that she hopes this volume supports parents who wish to teach their children about the power of prayer and forgiveness and the experience of God. Unfortunately, this book will more likely mislead children about the power of prayer, and it may even leave them convinced that they are failures or unworthy of God's attention. The book begins with Emma and Mommy praying together as Mommy tells Emma of God's love for everyone. Emma learns that God is always with her, that she need not be afraid. Later in the book, however, Emma encounters a mean boy at school. Mommy encourages her to pray for the mean boy, and, as if by magic, he is a perfect gentleman the next day. That is an unfortunate impression to leave with children, who will most likely not have such rapid and direct answers to their prayers and will consider that they have only themselves to blame. Ages 3-7.

PreSchool-Grade 1?An obviously didactic but nondenominational text centers on God's love and the power of prayer. Emma's mother has taught her from earliest childhood to thank God daily for her blessings and to trust that He will always care for her. Awakening in the night, the child is frightened until she remembers that God is with her. When she is picked on by a boy at school, she prays for his well-being, and he becomes kind and helpful. Emma and her mother have a close, loving relationship in which the child is warmly praised for her faith and concern for others. She is told that she came from heaven to her family, sent by God, who loves all people everywhere. The plot is minimal and obvious but successful as a religious teaching tool. Done in a technique of idealized realism, the attractive full- and double-page illustrations glow with a soft golden light that gives a feeling of happiness and comfort. It is difficult for a picture book of prayer that attempts to fit almost any monotheistic religion to be successful. Williamson's first book for children tries to have some encompassing flavor and, through obvious good intentions, avoids offense. Emma and Mommy say thank you, and ask God for help in dealing with nighttime fears and with Peter, who is a bully because he is sad and scared inside. The paintings are soft, and full of golden light, particularly in the scenes with angels. Both text and illustrations have warmth and sincerity and avoid undue smugness or sentimentality. No mention is made of any one organized religion; God is mostly defined as ``All the love in the world.'' This should content most--except strict atheists or those who believe that God is sexless or a ``she.'' Angels have rainbow-colored wings and, as with the illustration of ``everybody everywhere,'' represent a variety of human races. By trying in good faith to show no favoritism toward a particular faith, this book should be useful in institutions that receive requests for spiritual books for young children. Good children's book about God

"Every morning, Emma and Mommy talk to God. Thank you, God" is what they say. -From the book.
Isn't that a good way to let kids know that prayers aren't only for bedtime! And, what a great way to begin the day, -by being thankful and talking to God.

I like that this book is simple and addresses things that little ones think about. There are several situations in the story where Emma and her Mommy have the opportunity to see and discuss how God works in our lives. Emma talks with her mommy about some questions on her mind, like where did she come from, and who is God, and at night when she feels afraid in her room, she remembers what her mother told her about God being with her always and it makes her feel better. Then there's a little boy who is mean to her, and Emma seeks her mother's advice. Her mother tells her to pray for the boy and Emma sees a change in him and realizes that God did hear her prayer and that he is in the boy too. It sounds like a lot of different things going on in one story, but I think it's all woven together nicely. It's not too long and drawn out for the amount of information it covers.The illustrations and colors are nice. We'll be reading this regularly. I also like the idea another reviewer had about substituting your own child's name while reading it.

The recent success of HBO's funeral home comedy Six Feet Under proves the power of the macabre over public imagination. "[A]mused, disturbed, and delighted by the range of human behavior surrounding the subject of death," Ramsland (Ghost, Forecasts, Aug. 20; etc.) undertook a pop-anthropological survey of "cemetery culture" by interviewing graveyard caretakers, "death-care" consultants, funeral directors, grave diggers, monument dealers and mortuary assistants. This rambling, anecdotal account traces burial traditions such as embalming, cremation (30% of all funerals), corpse preparation, restorative techniques, cadaver cosmetics and unconventional funerals like the one attended by the deceased's fellow nudists. At Houston's National Museum of Funeral History and the annual National Funeral Directors Association's convention, Ramsland, a Rutgers professor, learns about mortuary schools and entrepreneurial schemes like hologram tombstones, the $65,000 mummification procedure and cemetery kiosks with touch-screen biographies of the deceased. Along with instructions on gravestone rubbing, artistic grave markers and unusual epitaphs, the book introduces "taphophiles," who visit cemeteries as a hobby. The book's closing section recounts ghastly tales of ghouls, corpse abuse, necrophilia and people buried alive, and fascinating interviews with people who grew up in funeral homes. Although it's "the corpseless soul that inspires the most fear," those with weak stomachs might want to skip the graphic description of autopsy procedures, botched reinterments and adipocere ("body cheese"). About the Author
Katherine Ramsland has written a dozen books and numerous articles and short stories. In the past year she has been editing Vampyre Magazine. After publishing two books in psychology, Engaging the Immediate and The Art of Learning, she wrote Prism of the Night: A Biography of Anne Rice. At the same time she had a cover story in Psychology Today on our culture's fascination with vampires. She followed the biography with several guide books to Anne Rice's fictional worlds including The Vampire Companion: The Official Guide to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and The Anne Rice Reader. Her last book before Piercing the Darkness was a biography of Dean Koontz called Dean Koontz: A Writer's Biography. She has also written for The New York Times Book Review, The Writer, The Horror Show, The Newark Star Ledger, The Trenton Times, and Publishers Weekly. Ramsland has a master's degree in clinical psychology and a Ph.D. in philosophy. She has been a professor at Rutgers University, a therapist, and a psycho-educator specializing in the psyche's shadow side, and is currently at work on another master's degree--this one in forensic psychology. She lives in Princeton, NJ.

Take this book for what it is and then you will enjoy it

Cemetery Stories definitely will not appeal to all interested in the subject matter at hand. It broadly dips into a range of topics, from ceremonies, corpse preparation, cremation, coffins, burials, ghosts etc (even necrophilia). So whilst you may learn a few facts along the way, if you want in-depth information on any of those topics then look to more specialised books.

The appeal here is the "strange tales". Ramsland asks those in the industry for weird or shocking tales and that is exactly what they give her. Whether they are true or not, we will never know as they are unsubstantiated. Some are fascinating, some are jaw-dropping, and some are funny. If there was a death-industry version of a Hollywood gossip magazine, at times it felt like this book would be the template.

If your ears prick up when someone is relaying a story about some mysterious graveyard occurrence, a story of a twisted embalmer makes you queasy but you cant stop listening to the details, or simply love re-telling stories that make others squirm, then you will probably enjoy this book.

There was also a lot of information in here that i have read in other books, most likely "Stiff", "Deaths Acre", "Buried Alive" and so on. So if you are widely read on the subject matter, then really all that is left for you is the tales.

Despite my criticisms and the fact that i often read scientific books on these topics, i whizzed through this in a day or two and generally found it entertaining.

GRRRR! Let's Get Realistic About This Book!

I didn't expect this book to give me a play by play description of how to embalm a body or cremate a corpse. I also didn't expect this to be an extension of Jessica Mitford's rip on the funeral industry. I didn't expect this to be an unending series of ghost stories. I expected random stories that delved into the often strange and sometimes humorous happenings that occur in funeral homes and cemeteries. I expected to hear stories that have their roots in what is commonly called "gallows humor". And I got exactly what I expected.
Some of the stories were short and moderately interesting, some had me guessing such as who the actress is who is buried in a pet cemetery by her pooch (and not by her husband). A few had me cringeing such as the thought of a less than professional embalmer wielding a wanton trocar like a headhunter jabbing a spear around. Some stories even had me laughing. And one story even featured the ever quirky and wonderful Shelley Winters.
The best part of this book was that it kept me reading. I took it to the health club and pumped away on a health cycle and read, read, read. I couldn't put the darn thing down. After I finished reading it, the book made it through my small circle of friends. Five people out of five gave it high marks.

My daughter Loves this book

This book has cute, memorable rhymes and my 2 year old constantly wants me to read it. She loves pumpkins because of this book, and gets excited when she sees any. I like reading it too, just right for bedtime or anytime. Looking for more from this author because this book is amazing! 10 stars.

Virginia Euwer Wolff's "Religion: From the Greek Re Legios, to Re-Link" describes the concerns of three pregnant teens trying to reconcile their physical condition with their spiritual beliefs. Jacqueline Woodson's "On Earth" evokes Carlene's tender memories of her Jehovah Witness upbringing as tempered by her awareness of hypocrisy. "Forty-Nine Days" by Kyoko Mori culminates with Shinobu's understanding of mercy after working through issues sparked by her father's recent death in Japan. Set in modern-day Haiti, Jess Mowry's "Esu's Island" encompasses themes about the nature of belief, rites of initiation, and the history of slavery in the islands. In Naomi Shihab Nye's "What Is the Dickens?," 15-year-old Leslie ponders her father's disappearance a decade before; witnesses her Lebanese grandfather's decline and death over a period of several months; and voices her misgivings about organized religion, especially fundamentalist religions, which seem so sure about everything. Jacqueline Woodson writes about a young Jehovah's Witness who is struggling with the fact that her mother, now shunned by the community, is no longer a part of her life. Virginia Euwer Wolff introduces three pregnant teenage girls, one Christian, one Buddhist, one Muslim, and reveals how the terror of an unwanted pregnancy transcends religious divides. One of the best pieces is by M. E. Kerr. Kids will relate to Ted, whose father is an embarrassingly boring preacher. But an encounter with a rock star, a schoolmate of the minister's, shows Ted the real meaning of grace. As in any short story collection, some of the selections are better than others. But this gets points for diversity and thoughtfulness, and there's enough to entertain and, perhaps, enlighten most audiences. Ilene Cooper

I thought this book wa rather depressing, although i highly recommend you read this. Not only because it makes you think but also because it is fun and insightful.The authors and stories in this book were portrayed just right.

I love this book, I don't get a chance to read it often, but it is definitely worth the purchase. The quality was decent, mine came from a library in New York. I guess people don't read inspirational books anymore.
