Great for Those Unfamialiar to Cheese& Winemaking

Although I confess that I have only read about half of theis book, skimming the other half, I am in love with it. The author's tone is personable, British, full of astute observation and wry commentary. He essentially walks the reader through the different variaties of W&C being produced (sadly, less and less) by individuals in both America and Europe. He explains in great detail the essential steps in making everything from Gruyere to Leicester and Mead to Merlot. If you are curious about this dying art, hallowed in antiquity and industrialized today, I should find no better place to delve in. Please, buy this book.

An Outstanding Resource

I had first gotten a copy of this from our local library. It is a source of a great deal of interesting information and has stimulated and assisted in experiments in personal experiments in cheese making, the results of which have given a tremendous amount of pleasure apparently even to those not involved in the making of the cheese but the eating of what was made.

As the person to whom I gave the book has the advantage of living in a region where raw milk is legally purchasable, he has the advantage of being able to explore the many wonderful and healthful cheeses one can make using raw milk and not have to rely solely on the cheeses he can purchase.

Tracing the origins of the Communist revolution of 1949 back to the late imperial era, he claims that the roots of this triumph of Marxist ideology go deep into Chinese tradition and convincingly relegates Western influence to the periphery. He proceeds to an expert analysis of the Manchu dynasty, the warlords (who found both their ultimate expression and death knell in Chiang Kai-shek), Mao's creation of a new state and China under Deng Xiaoping. Insightful and informative, this excellent synthesis of the forces that shaped contemporary China should be basic reading for anyone interested in understanding what the author calls "a largely unknown country seen from a great distance."

Fairbank's latest book is a fresh and spritely general survey of Chinese history from 1800. As an architect, editor, and contributor to the Cambridge History of China , Fairbank has maintained a marvelous command over the most recent scholarship. His knowledge, easy style, and own special acerbic commentaries combine to make this book a delight. Fairbank divides his account into four sections: growth and change during the 19th century; the crisis of the old order from 1895 to 1911; and China's two attempts to create a modern nation, the Chinese Republic (1912-49) and the Chinese People's Republic (post-1949). The book is never pedantic, but gathers together a lifetime of scholarship plus a true gift for presentation of complex issues and a fine eye for telling illustration. Fairbank's Crowning Glory

No decent individual who wants to talk about China, or wants to understand Chinese history in the last 150 years, can skip anything written by Fairbank. If there's anybody who can claim to be 'the' authority on China, Fairbank would be the one. And this work is his crowning glory, culmunating in a tour de force after research in this field for more than half a century. This work sees China's history from the late Qing period till the Post-Mao era as one huge struggle -- for modernity, for survival, for progress. If you are not convinced that China is agreat nation, read this and you'll change your mind, thanks to the late Fairbank.

Refreshing Storytelling

If there's one book that I could recommend to the general reader on the history of modern China (i.e. from circa 1800-1985), it would be this book.
To be honest, my first impression of this book is not a very good one in the sense that I did not feel like dancing in joy. This is because the book appears to me to be too simple, lacks good facts and not very scholarly. How could Fairbank write such a book? My expectations were very high or to be precise, I have expected the wrong things. This book is not intended to be scholarly, not intended to bog you down with boring details but is intended to be entertaining and at the same time have enough facts to highlight certain important events.
I bought this book only on a second visit to the bookshop and perhaps due to a change of mood, I find the book entertaining and at the same time enlightening in that it proposes different views on events that have not been considered before. For example, the discussion on the port of Hankow was quite enlightening. This is refreshing and after understanding the intentions of the book, my perception and expectations changed and I was able to see it in a new way. Since then, this has been one of my favourite books on modern Chinese history and will become a benchmark for me to measure good historical storytelling.
Compared to Jonathan Spence's "In Search of Modern China" this book appears to me be more entertaining and in a way, more intelligent. Highly recommended.

Very interesting interpretation

I wouldn't read this book as an introduction to Chinese history of this period. Fairbank's China: A New History, or several other general histories, are better for that. This book is Fairbank's argument that the development of Chinese history was far less heavily influenced by the West than most historians and Westerners believe. He convincingly puts the major interactions between China and the West in Chinese contexts, noting the similarities between Taipei Rebellion and the White Lotus Rebellion, for instance, although the latter event occurred when Western influence was much less. It's unfortunate that this topic is so politicized. Whether China was heavily or lightly influenced by the West should have no bearing on the inherent moral worth of the Chinese people, although many people on both sides of the debate don't see it that way. Nevertheless, Fairbank's topic is interesting in itself. Ultimately, I didn't find him fully convincing (not that I'm an expert), but I'm glad I read his book.

The story of the man and his enterprise, as told in Longaberger: An American Success Story, is as informative and inspiring as any likely to pass their way. In fact, this plainspoken memoir--prepared with business writer Robert Shook shortly before Longaberger's death from cancer in 1999--ought to be required for all entrepreneurs who think they really know what makes the business world go round.

In its pages, Longaberger candidly relates how he first learned to share and do his part as one of 12 children in a small house in tiny Dresden, Ohio--and how seemingly major drawbacks like epilepsy, stuttering, learning disabilities, and lack of a college education never deterred him. The son of a basket-factory worker, Longaberger saw a market for fine handcrafted baskets in 1973, as the popularity of handmade crafts began to take hold. By 1999 (when Longaberger died of cancer), he had built a billion-dollar corporation employing 8,000 people. Longaberger, who graduated from high school at 21 and had learning disabilities and a severe stutter, certainly did not fit the profile of the typical CEO, yet from the evidence he was an exemplary one. He proudly proclaims that he learned about customer service and sales from driving a bread delivery route and running a restaurant and grocery store. Following his own vision, he built the company from its smalltown roots in Dresden, Ohio, at the same time that he developed a unique direct sales network. Engagingly folksy and self-deprecatingly funny, he champions facing adversity and growing stronger from it. The feel-good story of a very likable man applying his talents and making a big difference to his town and his family (he groomed his two daughters to succeed him) should engage readers on its own. Meanwhile, those searching for humane models for running a successful company will benefit from the 18 straightforward management principles that emerge from his success. Wonderful Business Tips If you are a real businessman

If a book's name is success story it will not be a business textbook to explain business strategy or corporate finance. In this book you can see the optimism (which we need right now), persuasion(every entreprenuer needs), and a soft touch to people ( key element to create successful business). So as you understand this book do not make you understand hard business issues but make you understand that the realization of dreams are not restricted to business educated people... It shows you a person who has learning disabilities can create a company of 1 billion dollar worth... it shows you the importance of caring customers and touching customers and caring their families...
So people who needs business books they need to go text books not success stories... ... if i need a screwdriver and if i get a hammer, hammer will be useless for me but this does not change the effectiveness of the hammer for the person who needs it... so only problem is the person who selects it...

What an incredible story ... what an incredible man!!

Having just returned from a visit to the Longaberger Basket facilities ... a surprise from my sister (in-law) ... I was in awe and immediately had to order this book and read how this all came to be ... it is incredible!!! Dave Longaberger overcame so many obstacles, it was amazing, and the 'empire' he built is almost unbelievable!!! Now that I have read the book I must go back to Ohio and enjoy my time there even more.

Interesting story but...

As a former employee of The Longaberger Company, I want to say emphatically that I was in no way "forced" to buy this book as one reviewer inaccurately stated. Admittedly there was information sent out about the earliest date to preorder the book and still have it count towards bestseller status but that was it. I am looking foreward to the next book that talks about the "other" Dave.

About the Author

With the publication of his first book in 1962 at the age of 26, Richard Saul Wurman began the singular passion of his life: that of making information understandable. A holder of both M. Arch. & B. Arch. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, he has been awarded several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Graham Fellowships & two Chandler Fellowships. In 1991, Richard Saul Wurman received the Kevin Lynch Award from MIT for his creation of the ACCESS travel guides. In 1994, he was named a Fellow of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland & awarded a Doctorate of Fine Arts by the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. In 1995, he received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Art Center College of Design & was Chairman of Graphic Design & Product/Industrial Design of the1995 Presidential Design Awards.

Richard Saul Wurman continues to be a regular consultant to major corporations in matters relating to the design & understanding of information. He is married to novelist Gloria Nagy, has 4 children & lives in Newport, Rhode Island.

Excellent Recommendations

I own Access Guides to San Francisco and Wine Country and found them to be very reliable sources of information on eating and shopping, so when I was planning a 5-week stay in Paris I purchased this guidebook. Overall, I'm quite pleased.

Access Paris is an excellent guide targeted at a cultured reader that prefers to consider him or herself a visitor to Paris rather than a tourist. The organization emphasizes neighborhoods rather than monuments, and offers excellent information on cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, and other neighborhood attractions. Restaurant listings include a range of prices for each district, though there are fewer budget options than, say, in the Time Out, Let's Go, and Lonely Planet guides. I've gone to a number of the listed restaurants, mostly those in St. Germain and the Bastille with one $ in the listing, and found them to be of high quality, though I was unable to find one or two. And I appreciate the memorable descriptions this book gives--one restaurant is characterized as right out of a Jean Rhys novel, for example--and the frankness of its evaluation of certain restaurants as overrated and overpriced traps for the well-read visitor.

The book's organization, with neighborhood maps followed by entries on each number that appears on the map, is very easy to use while wandering. The neighborhood maps omit metro stops, however, making it difficult to coordinate one's immediate location with the map of the metro that appears at the back of the guide. Also, the local maps don't indicate arrondissements, which makes the guide difficult to use in tandem with a more detailed map book.

This book covers the islands, the Latin Quarter, St-Germain, Eiffel Tower/Invalides, The Louvre and the Champs-Elysées, St-Honoré, Les Halles, the Marais, the Bastille, and Montmartre. These are all well-established eating and shopping districts in the arrodissements that are at the center of the city. There's also a brief section at the end with select attractions in other neighborhoods, as well as sidebars that discuss specific themes or types of sites (Paris in film, representations of Americans in Paris, flea markets, etc.). If you're mainly going to be in the central arrondissements, you'll probably be very happy with this guide. But if you're staying in an outlying arrondissement, or looking for information on offbeat neighborhoods, this may not be the guide for you--as it also may not be if it's your first time in Paris and you want a guidebook that emphasizes a tour of the monuments. I myself have already done the monuments and was looking for what this book has to offer, so I'm very pleased.

Superb!

I must say, I am a big fan of all the ACCESS guides, and the one on Paris was no exception. I'm always disappointed when I go somewhere and there is no ACCESS guide for that city! One of the best things about the guides, Paris included, is that it allows you to break your trip down by neighborhood. While in Paris, we spent one day (or more) in each of the neighborhoods highlighted in the color code system. We had a great time, and the ACCESS guide played a big part in it (as it did in San Francisco and Montreal!). Highly recommended!

This is an excellent guide for the independent traveller. Its best use is for details on neighborhoods. I often "study" it before taking off for the day and get a much better feel for the neighborhood I am visiting. I also "study" it after spending time out for the day and clarify or confirm what I have seen. Used it for years.

Great kids book on Mars.ONLY

It is an excellent book for a kid 5-8 to read or have their parents read and show the pictures to them. The false "canals" of Mars are discussed as well as the epic classic sci fi "War of the Wars" by H. G. Wells (one of my favorite books). The Viking mission to Mars and lack of finding conclusive evidence of life is discussed. There are pictures of Mars. The moons Phobos and Deimos are pictured and discussed. There are a few good landscape photos from the small rover Sojourner of the Pathfinder mission. Unfortunately nothing about the rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Missed is discussion on the polar icecaps, volcanoes and huge canyons.

Do buy it as a 5-8 year old kids reading book to increase their reading pleasure. The young kids will learn a little about Mars too. Its a good book for parents to read and show the pictures to the little ones. 5 stars as a kids book.

This in-depth look at the life of Clarence Thomas, who has kept a low public profile for over a decade, is a refreshing change. Foskett, a journalist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, focuses on Thomas's growth—from his upbringing at the hands of a strict grandfather through his time at Yale Law School and his eventual, albeit controversial, ascension to the Supreme Court. Relying on a mixture of secondary sources and oral interviews, Foskett delves into Thomas's intellectual development, from a flirtation with black power in college to his embrace of the natural law philosophy that dictates his strict reading of the Constitution. While Foskett leaves no stone unturned in detailing Thomas's history, he occasionally is less effective at connecting the dots: is there a connection between Thomas's strict upbringing, his attendance at religious schools and his hard-line judicial philosophy? Foskett is occasionally critical of Thomas (he notes a scandal that dogged Thomas when he headed the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), but mainly argues that Thomas's legal mind has been unfairly criticized because he's a black conservative. Foskett's conclusion that Thomas was likely more truthful at his Senate confirmation hearings than Anita Hill will be a turnoff to some. But those able to suspend political judgment will learn a lot about the court's most controversial justice.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Foskett cracked Justice Thomas’s media-wary shell by approaching him after a Good Friday service. He deserves points for bravery, but most critics agree that this partially authorized biography leaves much to be desired (Thomas did not grant him access to his private papers). It makes sense that the conservative New York Sun would be the lone rave review, since Foskett is highly sympathetic towards Thomas throughout, even defending him against Hill’s charges (she declined to be interviewed for the book). Others excoriate Foskett for not thoroughly examining the strange pattern of anger and ideological shifts that define Thomas’s life; more than one critic called Foskett’s research shoddy. A highlight? Two sitting members of the Supreme Court went on the record (with complimentary remarks) about Thomas.

Subjected to both extremes of race considerations, from soul-killing segregation to elevation to the Supreme Court under the suspect political motivations of his white sponsors, Thomas expresses a desire to help blacks overcome discrimination but fails to provide suggestions for how to replace affirmative action. I still done know Judge Thomas

I was left wanting more. I felt the book was written to achieve a certain number of pages instead of providing me information about Judge Thomas. The book often provides far to much information about the people passing through his life. I was not interested in reading so much informatin about the people who employ him or the people he met on his life journey.

The book did address some of Judge Thomas early social ideas, but the book seem to be written without much input from Judge Thomas. I did not get the sense that I knew Judge Thomas after I completed the book.

A Balanced Biography of a Most Controversial Justice

Any book about the current Supreme Court's most controversial justice is not going to please everybody. Thomas remains radioactive as a topic even after more than a decade on the Court. The author, an investigative reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, however has written a fairly balanced biography that neither embraces Thomas nor condemns him. In fact, although the author did not have access to the Justice's private papers and correspondence, he did extensively interact with Thomas in covering the Court and in researching this volume. This is not to say the book is without deficiencies. The most notable problem is that a very limited amount of attention is devoted to Thomas's decisions. Instead, readers are referred by the author to Gerber's First Principles: The Jurisprudence of Clarence Thomas for in-depth analysis. The focus here is predominantly biographical and that has strengths and weaknesses in doing a judicial biography. The acid test of any Thomas biography, of course, is the Anita Hill controversy; here the author is somewhat too inclined to stake out an unsatisfying middle position: "Although it was plausible that Thomas said what Hill alleged, it seems implausible that he said it all in the manner Hill described"(at 251). Whatever one's views of Thomas, this book does afford a valuable insight into the forces that shaped him and how he ended up arriving on the Court. It will be interesting to see how Thomas's own forthcoming autobiography addresses the same issues as are covered here.

A balanced biography of an intriguing man

Several years ago, The Weekly Standard ran a cover story calling Clarence Thomas the most powerful conservative in America. He truly was at that time.

Foskett does a fair job stripping away the controversy and polemic to examine the man, his background, and his life. There is obviously the story of Thomas' confirmation to the Supreme Court, and a fair amount of time is devoted to those few weeks in the Justice's life. Far more interesting than that is his life before Washington, and before the political appointments, while he was still growing up under the stern eye of his grandfather, Myers Anderson.

Without understanding the world that incubated Thomas it is impossible to understand why he could view the world and the American judicial system as he does. To understand Clarence Thomas more fully one must understand Myers Anderson, the dominant force in his early years. Foskett accounts for the apartheid caste system of the Jim Crow south that trapped and warped so many people.

Passionate reactions about Thomas will exist for a long, long time. His ideas stand on their own merit. This book truly gives the reader a glimpse at the humanity of a man who thinks for himself and will set the judicial tenor of the court for years to come.

The eighth--and one hopes the last--book about Castaneda's apprenticeship with the Yaqui Indian sorcerer Don Juan Matus. By now, Castaneda's bestselling engine is running on empty, at least to judge by this lackluster entry, which adds fuel to the argument that the Don Juan books are fiction and that their author has passed his creative prime. Gone is the vivid sense of wonder as Don Juan escorts Castaneda into a new world of mystery and magic; gone the crisp presentation of esoteric ideas; gone the crackling tension between teacher and student. What remains is a token representation of Don Juan, guffawing at Castaneda or smacking him on the back, and a cloud of confused teachings about the world of dreams. Taking control of one's dreams, says Don Juan, is the key to a sorcerer's power. But what kind of sorcerer? Don Juan makes a distinction between the ancients, who manipulated the world for personal power, and moderns--such as himself--who ``search for freedom.'' Castaneda must thread his way between these two opposing camps, balancing his thirst for truth and his personal ambition. In so doing, he passes through three ``gates of dreaming'': becoming aware of falling asleep; waking from one dream into another; seeing yourself asleep. This review is for me, not for you.

I will split the review on four parts because it all depends on your position regarding Castaneda.

1- IF YOU ARE A NOVICE
If you have never heard of Castaneda or never read any books from him, I'd suggest you DO NOT start here. While most people would suggest you start at his first book, I'd say that The Art of Dreaming and The Teachings of Don Juan are the worst books to start reading CC's works. Why? His first ever book is confusing as hell because he himself was confused about everything that happened to him. To add insult to injury, his 'guru' or benefactor/teacher, decides to give him a lot of chemical based experiences (natural/plant based but a chemical experience nonetheless) so a lot of his experiences are not clear if they were hallucinations or something else. Choose ANY OTHER BOOKS but the two I just named.

2- If you are looking for an 'out of body' 'astral' 'lucid dreaming' instruction or experience first I'd suggest you take some Yoga Nidra classes and I'd also suggest you jump into Robert Monroe's Out of Body Experience trilogy or Tenzin Rinpoche Tibetan Yoga Dreaming (I have not read this one by the way but I read its reviews). This is one of Castaneda's darkest books because it gives you a pretty good warning that IF, that is a BIG IF, you are able to master waking up within your dreams by overcoming the barriers or gates THE POWERS OF THIS WORLD have set up for the common human being those who are successful at it will INEVITABLY encounter other intelligence and the sheer job of such non-human intelligence is NOT to help you but rather to trap your awareness because you'd be some type of sustenance to them. The reality is that if you made it that far, you are almost guaranteed to FAIL because unlike the Naguals and Dreamers of Castaneda/Don Juan's teams who underwent YEARS OF TRAINING to rid of the self and managed to do so, STILL FAILED AT THE TESTS devised by the non human intelligencies out there called inorganic beings, actual emissaries of their masters, some type of non-mobile entities from another universe whose job is guess what? CAPTURE MOBILE awareness such as ours. It is like a mix of a spider and a tree, it traps things but it is immobile. IT IS A TEST TO THOSE WHO WOKE UP INTO ANOTHER REALITY, the universe's way to make sure lower level consciousness don't make it to the top, it is a weeding system. As Don Juan said to Carlos in the book: "... they set traps at the beginning and in this manner UNDESIRABLE (to whom?) DREAMERS are effectively and PERMANENTLY SCREENED OUT. They have outstanding means, their awareness is superb. In comparison, those of us who are just learning to dream at will, WE ARE LIKE CHILDREN TO THEM. Children with a lot of energy, energy they don't possess but covet greatly." Even the emissary warns Carlos: "Dreaming is the mean to come to our world, it is the only vehicle available. Our world is connected to yours by the door called dreaming. We know how to go through it, BUT MEN DON'T. They have to learn it."

3- FOR THE EXPERIENCED CASTANEDA READER
This is Carlos' account on his experiences on THE SECOND ATTENTION and the pitfalls sorcerers meet there. If you have read The Eagle's Gift you want to recall this part:
"The battlefield of warriors is the second attention, which is something like a TRAINING GROUND for reaching the THIRD attention."

This book is a sober reminder of the following facts:
a- the 'worlds' out there are not much different from ours in the sense that they are PREDATORY BASED SYSTEMS. Never take anything for granted, don't attach to anything, on this side or the other and chances are you will pass the countless tests you will be faced with.
b- It gives the proper warnings and exercises to those brave enough wanting to push the envelope. He himself pushed the envelope, failed at it but managed, unlike ancient sorcerers, to somewhat comeback to our natural world 'unscathed' (not really, he fell for a trap, divided his energy among other two beings, one inorganic 'the blue scout' and an ex-human 'the death defier' one).
c- unless you truly have developed IMPECCABILITY as well as you have mastered to TURN OFF YOUR INTERNAL DIALOGUE I'd suggest you read this book, take the adventures as what they truly are, adventures of another being experiencing them and leave it at that. The chance of getting burned outweighs the chance of having fun because out there is what Bible describes as the 'second death' and it is not a physical one.

FOR THE NON BELIEVER OF CASTANEDA'S BOOKS
You are not ready but you don't want to hear this, on the contrary, you want to hear that Castaneda was a fake, a lier who said overcame physical death but died of cancer nonetheless, a man who spoke of impeccability but had three female companions with him. It is ok, your level of consciousness or awareness is EXACTLY where it needs to be but remember, ALWAYS leave a door open because everything you think is based on assumptions and assumptions are a 50/50 deal.

very original

All the reviews, from 1 star to 5, have merit. I'll give it 4 stars for originality and creativity. I happened on this just when I thought I'd read everything the "new age" had to offer. It is my first Casteneda book. Its very original content and form went from verging on the profound to being rather contrived and tedious. I think it ultimately is an amazingly mind opening work, whether fiction or not... possibly true, possibly the work of a lunatic. For me personally, it did not offer a lot of spiritual value but it did make me think - like any good science fiction.
