Although the explicitness of his sexual descriptions may bother some, and his poor writing skills may bother others, Gray's book is a reasonable and useful title. Gray's What Your Mother Couldn't Tell You & Your Father Didn't Know (1994) failed to match the success of its predecessor, the megaselling Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (1992), so this time out, Gray titles his offering seemingly in hopes of stimulating brand-name recognition and, hence, consumer loyalty. An Excellent Resource

We had lost connection in our marriage. Sex became something that was routine and did not increase our dedication to each other. This book helped me better understand the difference between how men and women express and feel love. It is not a "how to" book on sex. It is a study of a connection that can easily be lost in a marriage. I will definitely read this more than once and will hold on to it in case a space comes between us again in the future.

Very Highly recommended for committed couples

John Gray is such a delightful man, with such a correct
insight into the sexual and emotional makeups, and needs of both
husbands and wives. When you think. . . "he won't cover
that subject", the next thing you know, he is completely covering it.
After listening to this, I felt excited and energized when
I thought of how more meaningful my marriage, in or out of the bedroom might be. I will write another review after I share this with my husband.
I am getting another copy for my daughter and my son-in-law.

Peggy Guggenheim's tempestuous life (1898-1979) spanned the most exciting and volatile years of the twentieth century, and she lived it to the full. How she became one of the century's foremost collectors of modern art-and one of its most formidable lovers-is the subject of this lively and authoritative biography.

Her father, Benjamin Guggenheim, went down with the Titanic en route home from installing the elevator machinery in the Eiffel Tower, and it was in Paris in the 1930s that the young heiress came into a small fortune and began to make her mark in the art world. Uneasily married to the alcoholic English dilettante writer Laurence Vail, she joined the American expatriate bohemian set. Though her many lovers included such lions of the worlds of art and literature as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst (whom she later married), Yves Tanguy, and Roland Penrose, real love always seemed to elude her.

In the later 1930s, Peggy set up one of the first galleries of modern art in London, quickly acquiring a magnificent selection of works by Picasso (who snubbed her), Magritte, Miró, and Brancusi, and buying great numbers of paintings from artists fleeing to America after the Nazi invasion of France. Escaping from Vichy, she moved back to New York, where she was hugely influential in assisting the beginnings of the new American abstract expressionist movement (in particular, Jackson Pollock).

Meticulously researched, filled with colorful incident, and boasting a distinguished cast, Anton Gill's biography reveals the inner drives of a remarkable woman and indefatigable patron of the arts.

Guggenheim, a classic "poor little rich girl," was known as much for her sexual exploits as for her championing of modern art, a fact Gill, the author of numerous works, including An Honorable Defeat: The German Resistance to Hitler (1994), examines with candor, sensitivity, and mellifluous grace. After her father died aboard the Titanic when she was 14, Guggenheim evolved into a lonely, rebellious young woman painfully self-conscious about her less than perfect appearance and therefore burdened with low self-esteem. She preferred Europe to America, loved to read but never attended college, sought validation in men who didn't love her but who were eager to spend her money, and insisted on a woman's right to shape her own destiny. Gill patiently records every battle in her two violently contentious marriages (one to artist Max Ernst), her compulsive promiscuity, miserable failure at motherhood, and peripatetic lifestyle, then, with a sigh of relief, concentrates on her vision and generosity in supporting avant-garde writers and artists and her influential role as gallery owner and pioneering modern art collector. In spite of much chaos and unhappiness, Guggenheim--flamboyant and audacious, a magnet for gossip and a champion of artistic freedom--did move culture forward in the face of fascism, virulent anti-Semitism, and pervasive sexism. About the Author

Anton Gill worked for the English Stage Company, the Arts Council of Great Britain, and the BBC before becoming a full-time writer in 1984. He has written more than twenty books, mainly in the field of contemporary history, including The Journey Back from Hell: Conversations with Concentration Camp Survivors (winner of the H. H. Wingate Award), A Dance Between Flames: Berlin Between the Wars, and An Honourable Defeat: A History of the German Resistance to Hitler.

A Great Woman Deserves a Better Bio

Rarely have I read a biography where the author is so disdainful of his subject. Sexist and tone deaf to the life of this extraordinary woman, this book is full of name dropping but bereft of insight. What's more, Gill's coverage of Peggy during WWII consists of little more than how she strategized to get her paintings out of Italy for the duration. One imagines that the activities of the Nazis would be a core concern, yet they're completely ignored in this dull and plodding tome.

Art Lover was well written, but Peggy Guggenheim as a person became very tedious to read about, and very annoying with her over- the top life style, and complete lack of interest in anyone else, but it was interesting to read about her.

extremely readable, closest synonym listed first in bold
clean and pretty print on high quality paper
very sensibly organized 2-in-1 dictionary and thesaurus
since it has less than 1000 pages, its glossary coverage is limited
in addition to the convenient pocket-size dictionary, the new oxford american dictionary is probably a great choice for greater depth and coverage.

The value of a paper dictionary

I've bought several copies of this dictionary/thesaurus for students who are speakers of other languages. They appreciate the easy-to-follow pronunication guide and the convenience of having synonyms on the same page. My only quibble (as a tutor) is that the number and range of definitions is limited; but that is not a problem for the SOL students whose vocabulary questions are not advanced.

Fluffiest vegan cake I've ever tasted!

I've been a vegan for 10 years, but her Lemon Poppy Seed Cake is the fluffiest vegan cake I've ever tasted. I also love the Nut Pie Pastry! Not only do her deserts taste great, I like it that she uses as much whole wheat flour as possible and not too much oil or sugar.
I own a lot of vegan cookbooks, but almost always use this book, because her recipes always taste great! The only thing we haven't been happy with is that we don't like our food very seasoned. But I found out that even when I leave out the ginger, tarragon, salt and pepper, the meals still taste great. Lorna Sass is very good at combining the right kind of vegetables to create great taste. I use the pressure cooker for most of her recipes and love it that I can just throw some ingredients in it and have a great meal when I open the cooker again! We love her Barbecue-Style Tempeh Sauce, the Chickpea Vegetable Medley, the Tarragon Risotto with Mushrooms and Leeks (wow!) all the squash dishes and I could go on and on. I have never made so many recipes from a single cookbook! I'm also getting a lot of complements from meat eaters that usually don't really like to taste anything I make! I love this cookbook!

Reference and Recipes - A good place to start

The beginning of this book provides ideas on stocking a healthy pantry and kitchen. It offers introductory information on the basics of pressure cooking, wok cookery, and steaming. At the back it offers an ingredient glossary with useful explanations (such as which potatoes to use when baking, pressure cooking or steaming) and definition of foods you may be unfamiliar with, like pulses. In the middle are some very sound standard vegetarian recipes. Also included are Measurement and Cooking Time Charts for steaming, stove top cooking, pressure cooking - a feature I particularly appreciate. There is even a chart on growing sprouts. This would be a good book to give a young person who is just starting out. May I also suggest 'Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure' by Lorna Sass. Don't be afraid - pressure cookers aren't what they used to be. They are quite safe, easy to use and cook in way less time. I would hate to be without mine. Bon Appetite!

I have been cooking with this book for three years. It is my most used cookbook and contains wonderful, healthy recipies. It taught me to cook legumes and grains with the pressure cooker (my mother and grandmother had used them, but I didn't know how). The book literally became my guidebook to help my family to eat very healthy delicious meals - I am a working woman and cook when I get home from work or make batches of food on the weekend. This is a marvelous book. Thank you Lorna! (PS. I also use a lot of Bob's Red Mill products...if you can't find ingredients...you can order on the web).
