Law of Gravity, by Stephen Horn

From the author of the New York Times bestseller In Her Defense comes a riveting new thriller of betrayal and redemption in the nation's capital.

Philip Barkley had come far enough in Washington to know where those proverbial bodies were buried, but not so far that he'd lie about it. In the capital, that was no-man's-land, and his fall from grace was swift.

When personal tragedy accelerates his downward spiral, all that remains is his integrity, and it's the price of a fresh start. The disappearance of Senate Intelligence Committee aide Martin Green indicates a breach of national security. Senator Warren Young, the party's best chance to keep the White House, needs a credible report that the missing man was no spy. Barkley is required to oversee the investigation and deliver the "right" result.

As the case progresses, the signs grow more troubling, and even an FBI agent isn't what she seems. The pursuit of Green leads across generations, a trail of deception and murder that began with a woman's fall from a Bronx rooftop almost fifty years earlier.

Barkley's odyssey finally brings him to the door of a retired detective haunted by a case he never solved. Together, the two men seek justice -- and their own renewal.

Amazon.com Review
Phillip Barkley, the disillusioned protagonist of this nifty political thriller, has been sidelined as an investigator at the Justice Department since he blew the whistle on a fundraising scandal on Capitol Hill. About to chuck his pretense of a job and head to the West Coast to restart his life, he's still grieving the death of his daughter when Martin Green, the aide to a presidential hopeful, goes missing in what might be the kind of breach of national security that could destroy Warren Young's hopes for higher office. When Green's body is found, Phillip is assigned to work with an ambitious young FBI agent who's too politically naive to understand that she and Barkley are supposed to close the case before it can taint Young's campaign, not find out who framed Green and why. But whoever it is that doesn't think they've gotten the message will do whatever's necessary to keep Phillip from stumbling on the same truth that got Green killed--including killing again. Double-dealing abounds in this well-written, fast-paced story, which has as many twists and turns as the road to the White House. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
This smart Washington thriller, by the author of In Her Defense, stars Philip Barkley, a Justice Department lawyer who for a combination of personal and political reasons has fallen out of the loop and is in a form of rehab involving heavy dependence on prescription drugs. When he is asked to look into the mysterious disappearance of Martin Green, an aide on the Intelligence Committee run by Sen. Warren Young, an aspirant to the presidency, it's because it is assumed he will merely go through the motions; Young's committee doesn't want any trouble. As Barkley starts work, however, backed by an ambitious young woman FBI agent, things begin to look stranger and stranger. Was Green really a spy? What role does Barkley's ex-wife, now married to Green, play in the disappearance? And what link does Green have to the apparent suicide of a Hungarian Jewish refugee in New York 40 years earlier-which he was ostensibly investigating when he vanished? Barkley enlists the help of Joseph McSorley, an elderly retired New York cop who investigated the refugee's death at the time, and together they embark on what McSorley, an inveterate romantic, likes to think of as "a quest"-which soon puts their lives in danger. It takes a while for Barkley to come into focus as a hero, but McSorley is a great character from the moment he appears, and the windup carries its share of surprises. Horn has a breezy style and enlivens his tale with rueful humor; this is a pleasantly untaxing beach read.

From Library Journal
Having started out big with In Her Defense, a New York Times best seller, Horn tries again with this thriller. His protagonist is a down-and-out lawyer who runs into roadblocks after being charged with finding a missing Senate staffer.

Very solidly written and well told story
By Uncle Elmer
I'm not going to rehash the plot here but only say that Stephen Horn is a very good writer of legal thrillers with this particular novel being a fine example of his skills. He draws you in with a fascinating look at a down and out lawyer who finds a better part of himself through the things that happen in this book. Ultimately, this is a novel about redemption and written in a way that makes it's points without appearing to lecture or moralize. It's just a good novel. Period.
I had the pleasure of attending a seminar where Stephen appeared and was highly impressed by his wisdom, communication skills and his interesting ideas about writing and legal thrillers.

Law & Gravity
By Carol Kulman
Never read this author before, however, from the beginning it got to me. It is slightly different than other books I have read about CIA, FBI, etc.
I would buy more of his books.
