PreSchool-Grade 2 --Westcott excels at bringing fresh charm to well-known songs, and this book is no exception. Henry the farmer is followed by a curious crowd of farm animals as he carries out dear Liza's instructions. Ducks cavort in the puddles made by his leaking bucket, and birds swoop around the bundle of hay strapped to Henry's back. Finally, an exasperated Henry plugs the hole with his finger and douses the demanding Liza while she rests in her rocker. Liza seems to take no offense, for the final page shows Henry holding the dripping bucket above their heads while he and Liza prance in the water clad only in their underwear. Westcott's characterizations are right on target, and children will enjoy the song's repetition. Because of this repetition, however, the book is best when sung instead of read, for the rhythm is awkward to read aloud. A musical score is included. Sprightly illustrations accompany this humorous adaptation of the familiar folksong, which will be a delightful addition to any library, but especially useful for music classes. --Lori A.
