About the Author
Randall Jarrell (1914-1965) received the National Book Award for his book of poems The Woman at the Washington Zoo. His children's book The Animal Family was named a Newbery Honor Book, and his translation of The Three Sisters was produced by The Actors Studio Theatre.

Garth Williams's classic illustrations for the Little House books caused Laura to remark that she "and her folks live again in these pictures." Garth Williams also illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and almost one hundred other books.

What a cute story that is a variation of the classic GingerBread Man! I love reading these books around Christmas, with my First Graders comparing and contrasting the different versions of this wonderful story. I am very happy with the product and the seller.

CLEVER and WONDERFUL story for a read aloud! CLASSIC!

I can't believe that no one has reviewed this book! What a cute story that is thoroughly engaging for little ones and fun to read out loud as well. The witty storytelling is suburb with just the right amount of suspense and great twists. The narrator even addresses the audience, which definitely adds to the appeal and lends an oral storytelling feel to the experience. It is also noteworthy that there is a happily-ever-after ending for everyone -- no violence in store for the gingerbread bunny! :) The black and white illustrations are adorable as well. My girls 4 and 6 really loved the book and I'm sure we'll be reading it again soon. Extend the fun by baking gingerbread rabbits and recreating the surprise that the mother made for her daughter! It is too bad that a classic like this is apparently overlooked! I will definitely be adding more of Randall Jarrell's books to our collection!

PreSchool-Grade 2-Originally published in 1980 with black-and-white drawings by the author, this picture book has been reissued with new full-color illustrations. Beginning with dictionary definitions of "Hug," "Hugger," and "Huggable," the book describes various types of embraces, from the ordinary ("Grandma hugs...are especially nice in the kitchen") to the unusual ("Ice-cube hugs are quite common in February"). The final pages close with facts and hints about these displays of affection, such as "Never hug tomorrow when you could hug today." Minor text changes have been made; for example, "pricker-bush hugs" have been eliminated, while "good-night hugs" and "I-love-you hugs" have been added. The short, simple text works well with the brightly colored, cartoon-style illustrations of animals dressed in goofy clothing. Young children will giggle at the sillier images (an octopus squeezing a surprised fish) and may recognize many of the situations from their own lives (an embrace from Great-Aunt Mary, which leaves lipstick on your cheek). Although some of the paintings are too small for group sharing, this book will work well for intimate groups or as a bedtime read-aloud. Libraries owning the original will probably want to replace it with this attractive update.

I seldom give 5 stars but this book is worth every star. It's one of those Mommy feel good books like "Guess How Much I Love You". It's not hopelessly sappy either. It will make you smile, laugh and want to hug anyone is nearby.

ENGELBREIT'S BABY BOOKY SERIES A REAL TREASURE

Honey Bunny is a pastel treasure. Smiling cherub-like faces of various cultures show off their springtime treasures, such as candy, eggs, a chick, and a bunny. The author uses polka dot patterns in the borders surrounding the pictures and in the large words to draw attention to them. The muted colors give a soft appearance throughout the book. Parents will enjoy reading the colorful nouns and adjectives to their preschoolers and pointing to fun picture they represent. It's a great way to teach a preschooler new words. Hart expertly handles numerous characters, notably Max's quirky, but lovable mother and Henny, Death on Demand's best customer and mystery expert, who plays a clever mind game with Annie. The interplay between Annie and Max enhances the plot, where in lesser hands it would become the focus. Those who appreciate crime fiction in the Agatha Christie Mousetrap mold will also go for this superb whodunit.

Hart's fourteenth Death on Demand mystery is richly evocative of January on the foggy, chilly, damp island of Broward's Rock, South Carolina. Invited to a combined art opening and engagement party, mystery bookstore owner Annie Darling and her husband, Max, are present when the groom-to-be is found with his head bashed in. Circumstantial evidence points to one of Annie's young friends as the most promising suspect. After Max is deputized to help solve the case but Annie is not, Annie works on her own to exonerate her friend, on whom the police and Max concentrate to the exclusion of several other possible suspects. All the while, Annie and Max's easy, loving relationship continues, and Annie's somewhat spacey mother-in-law offers her encouragement through quotations on friendship. Mystery buffs will enjoy identifying the paintings of mystery scenes Hart describes at the beginning of the book and answering the trivia questions that Annie's longtime nemesis, Henny, uses to try to stump her. I believe that the opinions in this book are very enlightening. The co. authors explain their opinions very well and present their views cogently. Paul Cassell's chapter in this book was very convincing and it is very clear to note that he is oneof the leading experts in this field. I highly recomond this book to anybody who is interested in learning about the Death Penalty.

Balanced

If you are looking for balanced arguments for and against the death penalty, this is probably one of the best sources currently available. The book alternates between retentionist and abolitionist papers (those for and those against capital punishment). I have personally found it very hard to find any academic arguments in favour of capital punishment and perhaps the most academic one I have found is in this book - Louis Pojman, who was also the editor of a book on moral philosophy that was used in my philosophy studies in university.

This book is mostly focussed on the death penalty as it is experienced in the United States and features some of the most well known figures in the US on this issue (including former Illinois Governor George Ryan).

Being most familiar with the abolitionist arguments, I would say that this volume is not completely comprehensive, but it is worthy and I get the feeling that this is not aimed at showing all arguments - just the primary arguments of those speaking - and it does that excellently. It is an excellent book too if you are having trouble understanding 'the other side' in this issue and well worth the read.

On a side note, if you are interested in understanding the legal and international perspective of the death penalty I recommend Professor Roger Hood's _The Death Penalty: A Worldwide Perspective_ - the best comprehensive study on the subject I have ever found.

About the Author

Alexander Isley is an influential designer whose work is in collection of the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Modern Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His eponymous graphic design firm Alexander Isley, Inc. has worked for dozens of presitigous clients including MTV, Memorial-Sloan Cancer Center, Animal Planet, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and many more. Additionally, he has contributed design commentary columns for the marketing website www.reveries.com as well as articles to "Folio" magazine.

Each year, the Type Directors Club selects a prominent design studio or designer for the latest Typography book, which showcases the winners of their annual typography competition. Tremendous creative freedom is given to each studio, which is why this annual book evolves and varies from year to year.

The designer of Typography 31 is Paul Sahre. Paul is a well-known graphic designer, illustrator, educator, author and former World Graphic Design Foosball Champion. Paul established his New York studio in 1997. The balance he strikes between commercial and personal projects is evident in the physical layout of his workspace: part design studio, part silkscreen lab, part classroom. In one room he designs and prints posters (some now in the permanent collection at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum) for various off-off Broadway theaters, while in the other room he is busy designing book covers for authors such as Rick Moody, Chuck Klosterman, Ben Marcus and Victor Pelevin.

Paul received his BFA and MFA in graphic design from Kent State and teaches graphic design at the School of Visual Arts. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Op-Ed page, a member of Alliance Graphic International, and the author of Leisurama Now: The Beach House for Everyone, 1964-, a loving look at a short-lived product of early '60s consumer optimism: affordable middle-class summer homes.
