TV: The good, the bad, the ugly

As a person who actually works in the industry, reading David Wild's book on "The Showrunners" was pretty interesting. How many people would love to get their shows picked up and also to get a good first hand behind-the-scenes look at went on for several shows in the book was knowledgeable and I use the word again...interesting.
Although many of the shows listed in the book are no longer around. It doesn't really matter because there are people, showrunners in the book who will perhaps continue to be showrunners for other programs and to get their side and perspective on the business is good to know.
David Wild knows what he's writing about and he talks to quite a few big names throughout the book. His book on showing what it takes to succeed and how many fail in television and showing the good and also the bad is what many people interested in buying this book would want to read.
Sure, I'm sure there are a plethora of shows and showrunners we would of wished to see in this book but you do get insight from the showrunners for shows like "Friends", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Party of Five", "Will & Grace", "NewsRadio" and much more.
Is their life after "Seinfeld"? Can the super-trio behind "Friends" juggle three "must-see" shows? How do these showrunners feel about a "Party of Five" spin-off show starring Jennifer Love Hewitt?

The Inside Story

THE SHOWRUNNERS is a scholarly work about the television business which will answer the questions of any reader with a fascination about the behind-the-scenes part of the entertainment industry. Author David Wild has done a detailed job of examining and explaining the inside story. For those of us not in "The Business," THE SHOWRUNNERS proves that the "talent," famous as some of these people become, are the least important part of creating a show. Only once that show is a hit does the talent take center stage.
This is an interesting book though, at some points, its very thoroughness makes for a certain tedious style of reading. Still, it is recommended reading for anyone with a serious interest in the business of television.

A Clever And Smart Look Inside Your Television

I picked up this book on a lark at my local bookstore, being familiar with Wild's work in Rolling Stone, and thought it would be interesting and fun. It delivers. Wild manages to tell us about the stories behind the television series that we know and love. It's told in almost uniformly smart prose, with crackling humor. There are a few problems with the book. First and foremost is that large portions of the book, especially those dealing with "The Norm Show," appeared previously in substantially the same form in Wild's Rolling Stone articles. Another problem is that at times, there are too many stories going on. Wild follows SEVERAL sets of "showrunners," with characters and stories whipping in and out. I'd love to see Wild do a more in-depth look at just one of these people. Sure, some stories predominate--particularly the heartbreaking stories of Rob Thomas' "Cupid" and Paul Simms' "NewsRadio"--but often, I felt like there wasn't enough focus laid on a single storyline. Still, it's well worth picking up, if you're interested in seeing how shows come together in modern TV-Land.

After the month-long Gulf War of 1991, Iraq's Kurdish minority began to rise against Saddam Hussein's regime, which had in previous years engaged in genocidal campaigns, including assaults with chemical weapons, that killed as many as 180,000 people. United Nations peacekeeping forces helped established a "safe haven" in Iraqi Kurdistan (a section of northern Iraq that runs along the borders of Turkey and Iran) and elections were soon held. Teresa Thornhill, an English barrister who became concerned with the plight of the Kurds through an ex-partner's personal connection to Iraq, took two trips to the region in 1993 to see for herself how the efforts at democracy were progressing.

"The Iraqi Kurds claimed that they did not wish to establish an independent state," Thornhill writes. "Rather they wished to be part of a post-Saddam Iraq under a federal arrangement." But their efforts were hampered by the economic sanctions of the UN against Iraq, which affected them as well as Saddam, and Iraqi troops were poised at the edge of the border, ready to reclaim their land. In addition, rival Kurdish groups began engaging in violent conflict. Thornhill particularly concerns herself with the Kurdish women who survived Saddam's atrocities, but she encounters people from every level of Kurdish society. Her fascination with the region and its people is perceptible even in the restrained journalistic tone with which she recounts her journey.

As in Making Women Talk (Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights, 1992), Thornhill explores the Middle Eastern world through the eyes of its women. In each chapter, the reader meets a girl or woman who shares her experience of living under Hussein's regime in Iraqi Kurdistan. Cultural mores, such as the difference between honor and shame, are explained in tales like that of a 14-year-old girl whose mother had to kill her in order to save the family's honor after the girl brought shame upon them by being raped in a field by strangers. fascinating book

I got this book for free years ago at a garage sale, and figured it would be a dry read. One day I opened it and couldn't put it down. I had never thought about the dominant role that plants have played in history, and in current life. This book made me look at the world from a totally different perspective. A Love Triangle Out of Control.

In the book The River Road by Karen Osborn, Kevin, a father says, "You think you know people, but when something like this happens, you really don't know anyone at all." Surely this new book by Karen Osborn clearly and unfortunately illustrates this point all too well.
The River Road, told from the point of view of the three main characters, immerses readers in the story of two brothers who are in love with their neighbor Kay. Friends since Kay moved into this rural Connecticut area, David and Kay become lovers during college leaving Michael out of their customary threesome. As younger children, the three of them played childhood games and survived the angst filled world of high school in part because of their strong ties to one another. But then a tragedy occurs leaving parents and these young adults to wonder what went wrong and what really happened. As the remainder of the book attempts to unravel the mystery and what led up to this tragedy, readers have a front row seat as family and friends become accusatory and introspective, The book, told partially through flashbacks culminates in an ending which depicts how individuals suffer after a tragedy and the indomitable spirit to survive and love again. Certainly for those who enjoyed The Pact by Jodi Picoult concerning teenage suicide, this book will serve as a comparison to the repercussions that can occur when young adults fall in love.
Previous to reading The River Road, I read Karen Osborn's second book, Between Earth and Sky, that was set in the late 1800's in New Mexico. Told in the form of letters by a woman pioneer to her family in Virginia, Osborn presents strong women characters and wonderful descriptions of the land. While she does an equally fine job in this book of describing the characters and description of rural Connecticut, The River Road is a much sadder and more intense book in comparison. One can only wonder how life can spiral so badly out of control for something like this to happen.

Kay Richards and brothers, David and Michael Sanderson have been friends since childhood. But one tragic night changes not only their lives, but the lives of their families and even the town they live in.
In one careless moment, a life is lost and nothing will ever be the same.
We get all sides of the story as it unfolds in alternating chapters told by Kay, Michael and Kevin (the boy's father). They all loved David and his death affects each in different ways. What first looks like an accident takes an unexpected turn and there's a police investigation and then a trial.
The verdict is riveting and so is this well written book.
