My 3 y.o. daughter usually takes a while to warm up to a new book, but not this one. An instant hit! It's simple text and large pictures are perfect for a pre-schooler to-be.

Fabulous book for kids starting pre-k or kindergarten

My daughter received this when she started pre-K and loved it. It goes through a very busy day at school in a lyrical manner that kids love. The illustrations are perfect. It is a nice back to school gift for your favorite 4 or 5 year old or even to donate to his/her classroom.

Grade 6-10-A school-shooting incident in nearby Pleasant Valley causes Tom's high school administrators to be worried about a ripple effect. A crisis counselor is hired and a watchdog atmosphere grows as the teens' privileges rapidly disappear. Tom and his sophomore classmates are annoyed but not overly concerned about the new security restrictions until they notice eerie disappearances of friends who fail to conform, including Tom's two best friends. The random drug tests, backpack searches, parental e-mail, and dress codes soon expand into mind-controlling daily assemblies, book censorship, and camps for "behavior" problems. After a tip from a Pleasant Valley basketball player, Tom is convinced that students everywhere are being sent away and hopes his father hasn't also been brainwashed via the e-mails from the school authorities. The pace picks up as Tom and friend Becca are caught trying to alert their fellow students to the menacing counselor and know that their lives are at risk. There is suspense in the threat, though readers never learn what has happened to those who disappeared, except for one student who "died." A prosaic style and simple dialogue provide reluctant readers with an opportunity to enjoy a lengthy, frightening story. More mature readers interested in school-violence stories might prefer Joyce Carol Oates's Big Mouth & Ugly Girl (HarperCollins, 2002).

The arrival of a "grief counselor" brings a new era of repression--no cell phones, no reading Catcher in the Rye, no hanging out at the mall. Even worse, students guilty of breaking the rules have begun to disappear--supposedly to a kind of detention camp called Operation Turnaround. Nobody ever comes back. Esteemed adult author Prose wants to make a political statement about the gradual process by which we lose personal freedom, but she runs into trouble. Caught somewhere between allegory, dystopian fantasy, and YA problem novel, her book never finds a home for itself. There are moments of real terror (the finale feels like Hitchcock's The Birds), but many of the best fantasy elements--brainwashing the kids' parents with e-mail--seem patently ridiculous in a realistic context. Yet, there is considerable appeal: the suspense builds effectively, and the archetypal conflict--good-hearted kids versus an evil principal--is always a crowd pleaser. Bill Ott

disturbing behavior rehashed

Ever see the movie "Disturbing Behavior" starring James Madsen and Katie Holmes, in which unruly teens were brainwashed by an Evil Doctor, so that peace would reign on the little island they lived on? A poor soul Speaks the Truth, but he is ignored and given a lobotomy. It ends with the protagonist, his girlfriend and kid sister fleeing in the dead of night, pursued by Evil Brainwashed Teens and Doctor.

Well, skip it and skip this very similar book. Unless you're on a long car trip and need something to pass the time.
Here are some reasons why. The plot is holey - in the Swiss Cheese sense. The author doesn't bother to explain the most basic stuff, as other reviewers have noted. Teens don't live in a bubble - orbiting solely between school and home. They travel, have relatives, friends, bosses, co-workers, mentors, etc. who see them as more than just students or kids. I find it hard to believe that at least one of the students who was "sent away" didn't have at least one non-brainwashed adult seriously concerned as to their whereabouts. What about their siblings, for heavens sake?

If you are going to make the major brainwashing tool e-mail, you'd better do your readers the courtesy of offering at least a partial explanation. Readers are smart enough to connect the dots, but there has to be some whole picture for them to reach.

Also, the Internet is just too vast for all sites on a single subject (teen re-education camps) to be shut down. I'm not an Net expert, but I'm pretty sure that's still impossible these days.
While the paranoia after a school shooting is a timely and intriguing topic for a novel, this one fails to do it justice.

HARDWARE AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE

As the stylist for many of the photographs that make Decorative Hardware a thing of beauty, I have to say that I learned an astonishing amount about the history of hardware while working on this book with photographer Philip Clayton-Thompson and the owner of L.A.'s famed Liz's Antique Hardware - Liz Gordon, and store manager/writer Terri Hartman. I can no longer look at doors, windows or furnishings without noticing the hardware, its era, its patina, or wondering about its history. What a joy this book is to have and to give. Thanks, Liz!

A gold-inscribed invitation to a wedding in a foreign land led Christina Lamb at the age of twenty-one to leave suburban England for Peshawar on the frontier of the Afghan war. Among those friends was Abdul Haq, the recently executed Kabul commander, and Hamid Karzai, the new president of Afghanistan, who took Lamb to his hometown of Kandahar, where they rode around on the backs of motorbikes belonging to a group of fighters known as the Mullahs Front. It was these figures who went on to become founding members of the Taliban.

Long haunted by her experiences in Afghanistan, Lamb returned there after the attacks on the World Trade Center to find out what had become of the people and places that had marked her life as a young graduate, and to report for Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

She was now seeing the land anew, through the eyes of a mother and an experienced foreign correspondent who has lived in Africa, South America, Portugal and the United States. Lamb's journey brought her in touch with the people no one else has written about: the abandoned victims of almost a quarter century of war.

Among them are the brave women writers of Herat who risked their lives to carry on the literary tradition of this ancient Persian city under the guise of sewing circles; the princess whose palace was surrounded by tanks on the eve of her wedding; the artist who painted out all the people in his works to prevent their being destroyed by the Taliban; and Khalil Ahmed Hassani, a former Taliban torturer who admits to breaking the spines of men then making them stand on their heads.

As a journalist covering Afghanistan during the end of the war with the Soviet Union, Lamb has a unique perspective. Observing that country after the fall of the Taliban, Lamb looks back on her days reporting on the war and is deeply unsettled to learn that the rebellious "mullahs on motorbikes" who took her to the warfront became the cruel and unbending Taliban soldiers who repressed the people of Afghanistan by perverting the ideals of Islam. "Nowhere does it say men must have beards or women can not be educated," one Afghani friend of Lamb laments, "in fact on the contrary the Koran says people must seek education." Lamb speaks to the head of the most prestigious Taliban school, a princess in exile, and women who risked everything to hold classes in their houses. She also receives letters from Marri, a young woman who barely dares to hope that the Americans will liberate the Afghan people. This is not "Reading Lolita in Tehran"

The author spent time in Afghanistan during the time of the Soviet invasion and expulsion. She went back right after 9/11. The narrative moves from past to present, to past, from Islamabad to Herat to Kandahar, from war stories, to politics, to art.

It is worth the time it takes to read, and adds to one's understanding of the region.

The title and jacket descriptions made me think that this might be an Afghan version of Azar Nafisi's amazing book. It wasn't. It took me a little while to get over that and look at the book on its own merits.

Its not bad, but a better title would have been "My Motorcycle Mullahs". The subtitle, A Personal Voyage Through Afganistan, does describe the contents.

It doesn't have the richness or depth of Nafisi's work, and I wouldn't have made the comparison if not for the less than apt title. I have a vision of the marketing people, looking at the numbers on "reading Lolita in Tehran", noting the bit about the poetry group hiding in the sewing circle, and coming up with the title. That probably did a lot for sales.

There are many good books now offering us insight into Afghanistan and Pakistan, but even the best of them -- like Carpet Wars -- are by men and almost all the people they meet and talk about are men -- not surprisingly, given where they are. Christina Lamb has been in Afghanistan and nearby Pakistan over a period of decades. Her writing is clear, direct, and sympathetic to the people she's known there for many years, including Hamid Karzai. The people she meets -- and re-meets -- along the way become part of her story which humanizes the the local situations she describes. Top notch!
