The legendary Grateful Dead front man died in 1995, but the remains of his creative corpse continue to be unearthed (think CD releases from the vault, limited edition screen prints-perhaps even fresh batches of those trippy Garcia-designed neckties). This thin gift book couples a 1993 recording of the American standard Amazing Grace with a handful of Garcia paintings culled by his widow, Deborah Koons Garcia, from over 400 works. The CD's single track of Jerry's familiar, slightly off-key waver, accompanied by Grisman on the mandolin, Rice on the guitar and a little background coughing, is gentle and pleasing; the book, unfortunately, is neither. Garcia's art, which ranges from childlike landscapes to realistic line drawings to jagged acid abstracts, is interesting enough, but the pages are a mess of bright, weirdly cropped details laid out against stock computer-generated backdrops; the lyrics to Amazing Grace scroll along the tops and sides of the pages in cumbersome digital fonts. With its childlike sense of graphic design and its uninspiring celebration of an already much-celebrated rock star, this book seems less like a tribute-or even a vanity project-than a an attempt to pass off access to a famous man's archives as an uplifting piece of poetry. About the Author
John Newton is the author of "Amazing Grace." A former slave ship captain turned preacher, Newton was also a prolific songwriter. He wrote and recorded the first version of "Amazing Grace" in the late 1760s. Some say the melody is based on slave songs.

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman met at a bluegrass show in 1964 and collaborated on a variety of projects, including their 1973 band Old and In the Way. Jerry spent over thirty years writing and playing guitar with the Grateful Dead, while David revolutionized the mandolin with his own brand of acoustic music called "dawg" (a nickname Jerry gave him), which he continues to perform with his quintet. In 1990 they formed the Garcia/Grisman band and subsequently made new recordings, including the 1993 release Not for Kids Only, on which the song "Jenny Jenkins" appears.

Definitely not AMAZING!

The other customer review said this was a book worth reading???? There is no text inside this 15 page book. There are a few of Jerry's illustrations, however it is definitely not worth purchasing. I was frustrated because I bought it as a biography and it is a picture book.

this book seems like it will be a very cool and interesting book to read. in my opinion this would be a good book for any dead head out there. if your a garcia fan you should really think about reading this book and learn a little more about the great legend Garcia himself.

He also presents often-cryptic business and high-tech concepts in a style that propels the plot without bogging readers down in useless minutiae. It's OK, but a slight disappointment

When I first read Michael Ridpath's "Free to Trade", I was thoroughly enthralled by the use of bond trading as background for a suspense story line. There have been few truly integrated financial mystery novels. (A couple others are "The Takeover" and "Nest of Vipers.") Due to what I considered an exceptional first novel, I was slightly disappointed by "Trading Reality." Ridpath's latest novel is more cyber-techno than financial; too bad when you consider Ridpath's background in the financial markets. Although he starts the novel in a bond trading room in London, it quickly moves into different territory, that of computer generated virtual reality. That said, this is a pretty good novel, with a fairly intricate and convoluted plot, including a few red herrings, a couple of nasty characters, and a predictable, yet satisfying, ending. I would have preferred if the protagonist developed a more creative financial bailout. Even so, the ending was reminiscent of the classical English sleuth gathering all of the principal characters into one room, making them squirm, and finally announcing the murderer. Frankly, this would probably make a great movie script. It could easily be placed in the USA. Throughout the book, I found myself substituting American locations (Wall Street for London; the coast of Maine for Scotland; Harvard for Oxford), and it still played well. How about it Hollywood!

The story is about a Brit financial-type who takes over his murdered brother's start-up in Scotland's Silicon Glen. He is forced to deal with the conflict of honoring his brother's wishes and his own mercenary instincts.
The bond trader turned entrepreneur reminded me of Po Bronson's last two novels merged into a who-dunn-it, but without the humor. Merging the bond trader and high-tech startup entrepreneur together and layering that on top of a mystery was too blatant a play at a info-novel for me. And it was too predictable. I do not read many fiction books, but I was recommended to Trading Reality. I could not put it down. The characters were extremely believable, both in their thoughts, actions, and in their reactions to situations. I will not spoil the story line, but the ending was strong, yet a little predictable. This book was an excellent blend of bond trading (of which I know little) and computers (of which I know a bit more). It was also very thought provoking; just where will virtual reality take us? I shall certainly be reading other titles by this author. Go on read it, you will enjoy it.

In the ``Portraits of the Nations'' series, a readable, serviceable survey of the country hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics. Emphasizing the role of Norway's rugged topography and inhospitable climate in forming its national character, the authors trace its revered traits of self-reliance and indomitability from the fearless bravado of Vikings to the present reluctance to join the EC. Peripheral information, much of it fascinating, is set off in boxes--e.g., on two competing forms of literary Norwegian or on the 1066 Viking invasion of England (just before the Norman Conquest). The book is well illustrated with b&w photos and maps, though the omission of latitude lines detracts from comparisons of climate and agriculture elsewhere in similar latitudes, while the assertion that Norway (spanning 13+ degrees of latitude) is the longest country in Europe is true only if European Russia (spanning 30 degrees) isn't considered. A major challenge in such a work is selection. Generally, what's included here--with a few exceptions- -is significant.
