The Garden, by Elsie V. Aidinoff

In the beginning ...

There was the Serpent, there for Eve's awakening, and for all the days since. Teacher, mentor, companion, friend, and more. There was God. The Creator. Quick to anger. Dangerous. Majestic.

There was Adam: as God said, a joy to behold.

And there was Eve.

These four hold the future in their hands. And only Eve -- or perhaps the Serpent, too -- wonders what lies outside the Garden of Eden. Passionate, witty, beautifully drawn, and utterly unforgettable, The Garden, a debut novel, remakes and offers insights into a story that forms a cornerstone of our understanding.

From School Library Journal
Grade 11 Up–A revision of the Fall as written in Genesis, The Garden is told from the perspective of Eve, a quizzical woman who questions everything from her own "birth" to God's authority. Aloof and careless, Adam is the more physical of the two; he enjoys the paradise of Eden, running with the antelope each day, never paying attention to the lessons that his didactic God has to offer. The two other characters in the novel are God, an authoritarian who views his children as toys, and the Serpent, his close friend and Eve's kind and understanding mentor. By writing from Eve's point of view, Aidinoff proffers an alternate perspective on an old story, but, unfortunately, the book ends up reinforcing old ideas, that women are more "emotional" and men more "physical." In the climax of the story, God impulsively, in an effort to see the fruits of his creativity and labor, forces Adam upon Eve. This rape leads Eve to distrust God and eventually–with the Serpent's help–leave the Garden. The Genesis story has incredible revisionist possibilities, but the characters here are flat and uninteresting, and the simplistic dialogue is not compelling. Ultimately, the author's effort to retell the "Fall" in a fresh way frankly falls, and fails to do just that.–Kelly Berner Richards, St. George's School, Newport, RI

From Booklist
One of the world's oldest stories becomes new again in the hands of a 70-year-old first-time novelist. The setting is a lush, freshly formed Garden of Eden, where Eve is just awakening to the all-wise, feathered Serpent who is her guardian. Nearby, Adam is being raised by a cranky, white-bearded God intent on seeing that His creations adhere to His vision. But the Serpent has something far different in mind for its charge, and under the Serpent's painstaking tutelage, Eve begins to think and to question. Journeys with the Serpent outside the garden give Eve a breadth and depth of knowledge forbidden to Adam, who learns to fear a god who is both capricious and demanding.

Despite the Serpent's strenuous objections, God insists that Adam and Eve mate, and the event turns into a rape, for which Eve is loath to forgive either God or Adam. Only later, when the Serpent changes form, becomes a man, and makes love to Eve, is she prepared to accept her central role as the mother of humankind. Even then, however, she's still not ready to forgo her independence. Although the Serpent explains all the hardship that will come to her if she eats the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, she accepts the challenge to become a fully realized human, as does Adam, who, though lacking Eve's strength, also yearns to be his own person.

In an author's note, Aidinoff explains that she has drawn on lore that equates the Serpent to Wisdom, who is said to have been with God at the creation, and the smart, empathetic, even romantic Serpent will evoke the most response from teenagers (God is certainly one-dimensional by comparison). The story at times is overly descriptive. It is at its best during the dialogues between Eve and the Serpent, when age-old questions are asked and real answers are given--although not necessarily the answers that have been accepted for ages. For instance, when the Serpent asks Eve what she thinks of the songs of praise God has taught her and Adam, Eve wonders, "Why does God need to be adored all the time? We know he made the sea and the dry land and all the rest. Why does he have to hear it over and over again?" There's no doubt this book will upset some people, both in its depiction of God and because of its sexual scenes, which, though not salacious, are intense and uncompromising. Perhaps most disturbing is the scene in which God urges Adam to take Eve against her will. Some readers, however, will find the book liberating--a meditation on the role of humanity in the world and on the compromises people make when they choose freedom instead of obedience. Ilene Cooper

Review
"An intriguing interpretation of the Creation story ... Certainly unusual, this is a fascinating novel and sure to attract attention" The Bookseller "While The Garden is undeniably intense at times, Aidinoff has successfully leavened her tale with refreshing doses of humour and the sensual quality of the prose" Guardian "This is a remarkable, morally complicated provocative novel. I don't think teenagers should be allowed to keep it to themselves" -- Kate Kellaway Observer "A lyrically scripted, refreshing, reflective, mischievous exploration of Genesis and its ambiguous symbolism" TES "One of the world's oldest stories becomes new again... The story is at its best during the dialogues between Eve and the Serpent when age-old questions are asked and real answers are given - although not necessarily the answers that have been accepted for ages" Booklist USA

I found it to have a very childish perspective on God and the garden in general.

Thought-provoking
By C. Daly
In this provocative retelling of Genesis, modern values such as freedom, independence, and equality are juxtaposed with a definitively Old Testament God--petulant, controlling, jealous, and easily angered. God wants his creations to do as he says and is disturbed to find that they have minds of their own, minds more complex than he ever envisioned. He created human beings to amuse and worship him, not to go around questioning him.

The story is told from the first-person perspective of Eve, who is a curious, artistic, and brave. She can't understand why God made her physically weaker than Adam and wants to run with the gazelles as he does. The serpent is recast as Eve's mentor, a wise being as ancient as God who recognizes the necessity for Adam and Eve to learn their own lessons and to think for themselves. He does not trick them into eating the apple but lets them know exactly what they will be gaining (freedom) and what they will be giving up (ease and safety).

The book is written in simple but poetic prose that is easily gobbled up. I finished all 400 pages in a day. Despite the fact that I already knew the ending, I still wanted to keep reading. Eve is a well-realized and sympathetic character, particularly for young girls. Adam is not so well-developed, but this is really Eve's story. Furthermore, The Garden questions pertinent issues such as death, the soul, justice, free will, obedience, science vs. religion, and whether God is omnipotent. Some of the most interesting parts of the book concern Eve and the serpent's philosophical discussions. To many critics, this book is unsatisfactory merely because it calls into question the established religious dogma. To me, this kind of questioning is a good thing. I don't think Aidinoff is trying to start a new religion here, but merely to ask...what if?

The Garden
By Elianne
I loved this book. It gave a whole new perspective to the world's oldest story. The story was very engaging and thought provoking, and the text was so descriptive. I was able to picture everything the characters were experiencing quite vividly. The most fascinating aspect was my new perception of the serpent. This book allows the reader to really accept a new view of a story we have heard for years.

A Walk in the Rain with a Brain, by Edward Hallowell

Each brain finds its own special way -- that's the message in this delightful, colorful story by America's foremost expert on learning and childhood development.

Edward Hallowell, M.D., is a noted psychiatrist and teacher and a leading authority on attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. At many of his lectures worldwide he has read a story he wrote for children about how each person's brain is unique -- and it has resonated among the thousands of parents, teachers, and others who have heard it.

A Walk in the Rain with a Brain is the illustrated version of that story. In it, a little girl named Lucy is making her way down a rainy sidewalk when she spies, of all things, a brain -- Manfred, called Fred -- sitting forlornly in a puddle. The courtly cerebrum asks Lucy for help getting home, and as they walk along she worries that she's not smart enough. "Everyone's smart!" explains Fred. "You just need to find out at what!" Fred reassures her that each child learns and thinks differently -- and that every child has special talents.

Charming illustrations and a funny, whimsical story teach children to play and learn in order to find the strengths they have -- and a discussion guide at the end gives parents and educators the background support they need in order to help children understand and discover the sparkling individuality of their minds.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3 - The message, that "no brain is the best,/ Each brain finds its own special way," is a worthy one, but the didactic text doesn't work and the plot strains belief. A little girl, out for a walk in the rain, meets a brain named Fred who is looking for his head, and asks him to make her smart. He tells her that "smart" is only a word that a brain named Complain came up with so "some brains can rule all the rest." Everyone, he insists, has a special talent that can be cultivated, and no one is better than anyone else. Having made his point, Fred then "dip[s] out of sight" into a head that just conveniently appears. The rhyming text doesn't always scan: "Fred then smiled up at me,/ And said, 'Thank you/ For bringing me home, Lucy.'" The illustrations, all large cartoon spreads, afford close-ups of the girl and Fred eye to eye, and when Complain is told "No brain is the best!/ You are just an old pest!" his inflamed face is depicted over a spread, pupils crossed in their yellow orbs, huge teeth flashing in a grimace. Shadow illustrations of a dog chasing or fighting with a cat appear throughout. A lengthy discussion guide is provided for parents and teachers, and the information about how to nurture the brain with activity, nutrition, and exercise is fine. However, most youngsters' brains will not be engaged for long with this tale. - Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community College, CT

Smart We All Are
By Kay Jones, Educator
Written as a children's book, Dr. Hallowell's message is an important one for all ages. As Yoda would say, "Smart we all are, in our own way." The "plot" is weak. When would we ever see a "brain" walking in the rain looking for his head? My 5-year-old great niece will surely say, "That makes no sense." But, the message makes sense and the lesson is a powerful one: "No brain is the same, no brain is the best, / Each brain finds its own special way." Being smart cannot always be measured by a test, and we must play to find our brain's way. In too many homes, watching TV and videos consumes active play time. In our schools today, recess is being taken away to make more time for tutoring and testing. This story reminds parents and teachers about the importance of play as learning. Parents and educators need to hear Dr. Hallowell's message and make changes at home and in school that promote our kids' physical, mental, and intellectual development. The discussion guide at the end makes suggestions for doing so.

Kids Loved It
By Melissa Orlov
I know Ned Hallowell and like his work, but this review is actually from my kids - they loved it! The message is simple and right on - no one type of brain is superior - all are special and you just need to find out at what. Our family also had fun using the discussion guide at the back of the book and talking about what our own brains do best. This story is a gem!

Isabel's Daughter: A Novel, by Judith R. Hendricks

From the author of Bread Alone comes an intimate tale of a woman -- given up at birth -- piecing together her mother's identity

After a childhood spent in an institution and a series of foster homes, Avery James has trained herself not to wonder about the mother who gave her up. But her safe, predictable life changes one night at a party in the home of a wealthy Santa Fe art dealer when she stumbles upon the portrait of a woman who is the mirror image of herself.

Avery has found her mother, Isabel Colinas, an artist who died eight years earlier in a tragic accident. Slowly but inevitably, she is compelled to discover all she can about the woman. Searching for Isabel -- in her work, in the stories of friends, rivals, and lovers, in Isabel's own journal, and in what's left of Querencia, the old miner's cabin that was her haven -- Avery is drawn into complex relationships with the people who knew her mother. And the unexpected reappearance of Will Cameron, the boy Avery loved in high school, further complicates matters. As she draws together the threads of her mother's artistic heritage, her grandmother's skills as a curandera, or healer, and her own talent for cooking, Avery learns that, while discovering Isabel provides a certain resolution in her life, it's discovering herself that brings lasting happiness.

Beautifully observed and insightful, with Isabel's Daughter Judith Ryan Hendricks delivers a moving portrait of familial love -- a bond that transcends time and place.

From Publishers Weekly
A foundling's search for her mother is the subject of this heartfelt if predictable second novel by Hendricks (Bread Alone). Revealed in flashbacks, Avery James's odyssey takes place in the Southwest, where she grew up in the county orphan's home. She is shunned by her more privileged peers through most of her school years, until popular Will Cameron breaks through her determinedly antisocial armor, and she has her first bittersweet experience of love. Avery leaves the home for the rural haven provided by an eccentric old woman called Cassie, a curandera, or healer, who teaches Avery how to concoct remedies from wild plants. As she grows older, Avery's curiosity about the mother who abandoned her becomes increasingly obsessive. Eventually, she finds her way to Santa Fe and its famed art colonies, and goes to work for a trendy caterer (she had providentially learned to cook in the orphans' home). At the house of a client, she sees a portrait of a woman to whom she bears a striking resemblance. Avery's eyes, one brown, one amber, have always been her distinguishing feature, and they're exactly like those of the woman in the portrait, painted by renowned, brilliant artist Tom Hemmings. The client and owner of the painting, millionaire gallery owner Paul DeGraf, takes a liking to Avery and becomes pivotal to her search for her roots. The climax involves a heady dose of feel-good melodrama, but Avery's no-nonsense toughness keeps the saccharine at bay.

Adult/High School-Avery James, left at an orphanage as a newborn, cannot forget that her mother abandoned her. Angry at the world, she runs away at 13 and attends high school in a nearby New Mexico town with the help of Cassie, an old woman who is herbalist, healer, and friend. The teen falls in love with Will Cameron, a wealthy classmate who proposes marriage. But Cassie dies suddenly, and Avery fears discovery of her past. After graduation, she flees again, to Albuquerque. Working as a waitress, she makes friends with Rita, and they move to Santa Fe, where a small catering firm hires her. While working at the home of Paul DeGraf, an art dealer, she sees a portrait of a woman who could be her double: it is her mother. A well-known fiber artist engaged to DeGraf, she drowned mysteriously in the pool at his home. When Rita leaves, Avery, now jobless, moves into DeGraf's guest house. She meets Will again, and their future together is presaged, but Isabel's death remains a mystery. Teens will identify with Avery, who has all the emotion and sass of a girl becoming a woman, plus an indomitable will. While the story is somewhat fantastic, the characters, especially the protagonist, are well drawn and the dialogue is true to life.

From Booklist
At the core of this novel pulses a relationship between two people who never knew each other--Avery James and the mother who abandoned her when she was an infant. Its beat, muffled for years as Avery scraps her way up through childhood as an orphan, grows louder when she stumbles accidentally into a circle of people who knew her now-long-dead mother. Hendricks covers well-trod ground--a child's quest to understand an absent parent turns into an exercise in self-discovery. But Hendricks writes so convincingly and with such appealing characters that nothing about the book feels tired. She calls to mind Barbara Kingsolver in her affinity for wise women and the power of close female friendships. The novel gets texture from the contrast between the self-preserving toughness Avery affects and the extraordinary warmth she encounters in a few key people. Readers of this fine novel won't want to tune out any part of Avery's life. Karen Holt

Enchanting
By Haley Burke
Judith Ryan Hendricks has scored high marks once again with ISABEL'S DAUGHTER. I loved BREAD ALONE and finished it, coincidentally, the day ISABEL'S DAUGHTER was released. While wandering through the bookstore with my son on his birthday I was delighted to find her second novel. Yes, it took me four months to get to it because of all the other unread books on my shelves, but it was worth the wait. The story is interesting and beautifully written. Ms. Hendricks' enchanting style pulls you into the story and, in this case, into New Mexico, a state that is already magical to me. Avery James, the discarded orphan, is far from perfect, but she has good reason to live a life that is disconcerting. There are many mysteries in her life which she works to unravel, leaving the orphanage and traveling south into the art world of New Mexico. For those of you who already love the Southwest, this will bring it home to you in a nostalgic and romantic way. For those of you who have never visited or lived there, you'll want to change that as soon as possible!
Judith Ryan Hendricks is on my list to watch out for all future novels. She has a gift and here's one reader who hopes she uses it often and well.

Moving Tale
By Melissa McCauley
Avery James was raised in a foundling home in southeast Colorado where her only real friend was the school's cook, Esperanza. After a disastrous placement in foster care and the death of Esperanza, Avery runs away and ends up with Cassie, an old curandera (herb-woman, healer, witch) in New Mexico. Because of her lonely childhood, Avery has built a wall around her heart and pushes back anyone who tries to care about her. After Cassie's death, Avery is once again set adrift and runs away from Will Cameron, the young man who is in love with her.

Avery hitchhikes to Albuquerque, where she works in a diner and attends night classes at the university. On a whim, she and her roommate move to Santa Fe, where Avery finds work with a catering company. This is how she meets Paul deGraf, her mother's former lover, and begins to unravel the mystery of who her mother was, and who Avery is, was, and wants to be.

I used to live in Santa Fe and found the descriptions of the town and its inhabitants spot-on. Hendricks' fluid and detailed descriptions of the food often made my mouth water. (Yum, chile rellenos)

Beautifully emotional, detailed and expressive
By Amazon Customer
Not many writers can weave so much emotion into their passages. But Judith Hendricks does this very well. She has combined real, likeable characters, a story packed with emotion, complicated relationships, and incredibly strong, inspiring female characters. The thing that makes this book, and this author, stand out even more is that Judith Hendricks knows the power and magic of female relationships. And she is a genius at portraying these things in words. I really felt like I understood Avery James in ISABEL'S DAUGHTER, I cried for her. But even better, I loved this story of healing and perseverence and the strength that a woman gathers from within herself and from the women in her life.

Clear and concise yet a rigorous treatment

I used this text at Manhattan College's graduate engineering school and was fortunate enough to be taught by one of the authors. This text covers the material at levels that an undergraduate engineer can grasp, yet is suited perfectly for graduate level training. Written by some of the best people in the business, personally and professionally.

Material great, paperback poor quality
By grad student
I purchased this book for a class. The written material is exactly what I needed, but the workmanship of the paperback version is really poor. I knew I was purchasing a paperback, but I didn't expect to get so little for $100. Some pages are already falling out because the glue binding is so shotty.

Aeolian sand and sand dunes (Research texts in sedimentology), by K. Pye, H. Tsoar

It is almost exactly half a century since the publication of R. A. Bagnold's classic book The physics of blown sand and desert dunes, and it is a tribute to the quality of Bagnold's work that many of the fundamental principles which he developed remain valid today. His book continues to be essential reading for any serious student of aeolian processes. However, the past two decades have seen an explosion in the scale of research dealing with aeolian transport processes, sediments, and landforms. Some of this work has been summarized in review papers and edited conference proceedings, but this book provides the first attempt to review the whole field of aeolian sand research. Inevitably, it has not been possible to cover all aspects in equal depth, and the balance of included material naturally reflects the authors' own interests to a significant degree. However, our aim has been to provide as broad a perspective as possible, and to provide an entry point to an extensive multi-disciplinary scientific literature, some of which has not been given the attention it deserves in earlier textbooks and review papers. Many examples are drawn from existing published work, but the book also makes extensive use of our own research in the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and North America. The book has been written principally for use by advanced undergraduates, post graduates, and more senior research workers in geomorphology and sedimentology.
