Goldstein is the author of the well-respected A Taste of Russia (published as A La Russe , LJ 8/83; HarperPerennial: HarperCollins, 1991) and a Russian professor at Williams College. Here she focuses on an area known for its warm hospitality and diverse regional cuisine. Beginning with a brief history of the Georgian republic and an exploration of its cultural and culinary traditions, she then presents 100 or so recipes. Goldstein's scholarly credentials are evident in her informed commentary. Juliane Margvelashvili's earlier The Classic Cuisine of Soviet Georgia ( LJ 8/91) has a lighter, somewhat more engaging tone, and, not surprisingly, many of the recipes in the two books are similar. Nevertheless, good books on Russian food remain few and far between, and Goldstein's is a good addition to the literature.Sciences

A beautiful Culinary Cultural Portrait

This is a wonderfully interesting cookbook. It's recipes are understandable and not too adapted. I do so hate when an ethnic cookbook turns everything into Midwest supermarket standards. In this book, Darra Goldstein explains the herbs, spices and products that Georgian's cook with in excellent detail. She also provides a historical, cultural surround that immerses the reader pleasantly into another world, an ancient place that I am able to at least partially visit while reading this book. It is an inspiration to cook somewhat differently, to break with years of routine.

My own inspiration to cook Georgian recipes came when a new restaurant opened nearby in central Pa. Ethnic food is rare here. An Armenian owner hired an excellent Uzbec chef who brewed up some delectable Georgian Kharcho. It was love at first taste. The ground spices including dried ground marigold petals, a poor man's saffron in other cuisines, and the mixed chopped herbs at the end, cilantro, parsley and dill, created a delightful complexity of flavor that was new to me. Fascinating read

Georgian cuisine has enthralled me ever since coming across a few recipes in "Please to the Table: the Russian Cookbook" by Anya Von Bremzen and John Welchman. This cookbook only helped deepen it, but more importantly it provides a fascinating portrayal of Georgian history and culture that only deepens one's appreciation for it. As a cookbook itself, by modern standards, it might disappoint: it's paperback, black and white, and thus lacks the food porn-type photos. But it ranks among my favorite cookbooks, precisely because it's not so much a book about how to cook Georgian food, but how to understand it as much as is possible for an American reader. Highly recommended!

A feast in itself!! Treasure of a book

Our family fell in love with Georgia when we visited back in 2013. I bought this book before our trip and loved learning not only about the food, but also about this wonderful country! The recipes are easy to follow and prepare! It is really one of my favorite cookbooks around. I have tried so many of the recipes. Favorites include Khachapuri (who doesn't like this divine cheese bread!), Khinkali (dumplings) and Chkmeruli (Garlic Fried Chicken).

Weinstein and Scarbrough, both writers for Gourmet and Fine Cooking, have amassed a nice assortment of recipes aimed at twosomes. Although the cookbook lacks pictures, the recipes are understandable and relatively easy to prepare. The authors modify ingredients so that instead of having to store, and a week later throw out, the leftovers, one can buy just the amount necessary of a particular item. For example, they show that one can actually bake a batch of two large Linzer Cookies as a dessert, or prepare just two servings of a Lardons Salad with Poached Egg and Warm Bacon Dressing. The authors point out, however, that dairy ingredients are more difficult to find in smaller quantities, and even when substitutions can be found, they don't always work quite right. Each dish is rated according to its ease of preparation and follows Weinstein and Scarbrough's mantra of "you'll buy what you use, use what you buy."

A really great cookbook for two people (or one and a lunch)!!

I saw this cookbook in a bookstore and knew I had to have it. I love to cook and have done so for years but had gotten into a rut by cooking the same 10 things all the time. After all, most recipes will feed an army and it takes days to eat the end result (or it would end up forgotten in the freezer or worse still, in the trash). It got truly discouraging as even halfing most recipes still makes too much for a single or double household. Using this cookbook has encouraged me to make something different all the time and to use ingredients I did not use in those 10 repetitious dishes. While almost all the ingredients can be found in today's supermarkets, when they can't, then an occasional trip to a speciality store can be fun and, once an ingredient such as curry paste is purchased, then it's there for the next time. Another nice thing about the recipes is that the dishes, by being just enough for two, gives me a dinner and a lunch for work and NO leftovers!!! And once cooked, the dishes look, taste and smell so special (think about that good old standby, tuna and noodle casserole but with artichoke hearts!).

Goodness, who knew they even published cookbooks for singles or doubles. Anyway, once I got back to a computer after leaving the bookstore, I checked to see if Amazon.com had other "cooking for one or two" cookbooks. They do so I ordered this book and a couple others that day but this is my favorite! I've tried about half of the recipes so far and all are keepers. A minor note for those using whole grains/pasta: when a recipe (whether from this book or any other) calls for uncooked white rice, I cook brown rice 1/2 the time with 1/2 the water needed to fully cook, then add it to the recipe. It will finish cooking in the amount of time allotted for white rice.

I sure hope Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough writes another "Cooking for Two" cookbook soon.

Absolutely hilarious! A fun and innovative storytelling!!

'Monica's Untold Story' broke through the stagnant, boring reporting we all got so tired of hearing. This book was a laugh out loud read that left me smiling for the rest of the day. Having to listen to endles reports about 'Monica's Story' by Andrew Morton, of which I fell asleep by the time I got to page 20, I was glad to know I could turn to something fun and fresh. We have heard all that before, through the trial, Linda and Barbara. Who wants to hear that same old story over and over?? Frankly, Morton's book was terrible. All of my girlfriends now have the Untold version and we all sat around and chuckled to ourselves about how great the rhyme and reason approach worked. Plympton's illustrations are absolutley unbelievable! This review can do Monica's Untold Story no justice. Hopefully it does all to tarnish the told version by Morton...don't waste your money on that.

Judith Regan Hits Another Homerun!

Judith Regan's Monica's Untold Story is the perfect antidote to the media's self-righteous hypocritcal coverage of the stupidest story of the 20th Century. Way to go Judith! Monica's Story is funny and well illustrated. Buy the book and be the life of your next cocktail party. Add a box of cigars and you have the perfect father's day gift for the CEO in your family. Judith Regan is also the publisher and editor of Howard Stern's Miss America. I never thought Judith would be able to top Miss America, but Monica's Untold Story is so good that she may have done exactly that. The only book I hold in higher esteem is Getting To Howard: The Odyssey of an Obsessed Howard Stern Fan. By the way, if Judith Regan ran for Senator in New York I'd vote for her over Hillary.

The outrageously funny and true story of Miss Lewinsky!!

Read this book!! "Anonymous" hits the nail on the head with this pathetic tale of a misguided lass who doesn't realize the fool she's made of herself. Written in an appropriate, fairytale manner, this "Untold Story" is an entertaining encapsulation of the reasons why Miss Lewinsky is a godsend to the likes of Leno and Letterman. The tragedy is, The First Intern is the personification of a society that is plunging headlong into Existentialist Hell.
