Kelly Slater is a world-champion surfer who came out of semi-retirement in 2002. When he has time he sings with his band, The Surfers. He owns the Kelly Slater Boardrider's Club, a clothing and surf shop in Los Angeles, where he lives.

Very Good

I really enjoyed this book. The basic story of Slater's life is interesting, but his honesty about his feelings is what I enjoyed most. It's easy to think that guys who tackle huge waves never know a timid moment in their lives, but Slater's comments about his feeling timid against big surf, and feeling timid on dry land in the form of having a shy personality when he was a kid, were reassuring to someone like me who certainly has felt fear in the water and was a shy kid, too. (Slater was voted "best looking" at his high school, so in a way his shyness didn't MATTER, since girls came after HIM. I wish I'd lost my virginity as young as he did! But nonetheless, his honesty about his feelings are endearing and interesting.) And if you're a surf nut, just reading his take on approaches to surfing, his experiences with different breaks, and his evolvement as a surfer are interesting. Sometimes it feels like THE MATRIX where Neo/Slater blows it a lot during the learning process, but it's those mistakes that make for a rapid learning curve. P.S. Aug. 2, I had Kelly sign the book yesterday at the U.S. Open in Huntington Beach, after he introduced Tom Curren at the ceremony where Curren impressed his feet and hands in cement. I told Kelly I'd finished the book and liked it, and he said, "Thanks a lot," but seemed maybe a little disbelieving, since the book had only been published a couple days before. But I did read it in only a couple days...because it's a good read.

Pipe Dreams, may haunt you

For readers expecting the champ to keep pace with the ever-increasing quality of surf literature, you are in for a disappointment. The only conclusion I can come to is that this was written for pre-teens. I believe even they would be left wanting more. I felt as if I was reading a chronological timeline of surf contest results while sprinkled in were tidbits of interesting relational, or situational, anecdotes that were never developed or cut short. This man's story could have gone into so many interesting directions but one direction was never made clear. So why the three stars anyway? Because he has given us the first roughly hewn look into some personal experiences that shaped him.
All the raw paragraphs did expose the champ as someone less enviable, maybe a little less balanced out of the water, but with one internal drive: his competitive nature. Between these pages are the things he cares about most. We are witness to a man in development and someone still searching. This biography leaves the reader feeling they have received an unedited glimpse into Mr. Slater's life. An interesting segway that needs to be explored further is the story of the changing of the guard. I know that Kelly Slater was at the heart of a revolution in the way competitors viewed each other, as friends, as fellow artist and musicians, and as renaissance men. This revolution changed the face of surfing forever. I know because I have seen the difference in surf literature and films and in the water. Mr. Slater, thanks for the effort, but you still have more to offer us, in and out of the water.

In all honesty, I didn't expect to enjoy this book. After all--what do I, a gal scientist, have in common with a surf legend who trumps his peers to float somewhere up there with Kwan, Woods, and Jordan?

Instead, I found myself unable to put it down. Well written and wonderfully candid, it promised everything that goes into a unforgettable biography--and then some.

Slater imbues his writing with gut-wrenching, broad-appeal emotion--a notable accomplishment in crafting a story around a sport and way of life not accessible to most of the world. By the end, I felt like I could play a round of golf or have a beer with Slater and relate to him on a level that surpasses lines of class and celebrity--one that is simply, human.

My only complaint? I would've liked captions for the photos.

I hated to say goodbye at the end. That should say it all.

El pasado de Julio está lleno de incidentes criminales y negocios cuestionables. Sus creencias religiosas y morales chocan con las de sus padres, con quienes vive aún cuando es tiempo de alzar vuelo.

Ha ocultado las verdades de su vida para sobrevivir en la compleja vorágine social, económica y política de Spanish Harlem (El Barrio), sector neoyorquino sumido en una desbocada transición demográfica manipulada por inversionistas sin escrúpulos, y el aparente desdén de las autoridades.

El viejo dicho de "ojos vemos, corazones no sabemos," cobra en El Fuego de Changó giros insospechados.

Cuando Julio se enamora de Helen, una empresaria blanca que se ha mudado a su edificio, determina ser conocido por lo que es, e intenta encaminarse por los senderos de redención y esperanza. Sin embargo, no le será fácil.

Cuando se mete hasta el cuello en problemas encontrados o autoinducidos, es Papelito, un santero amanerado y amigo como pocos, quien le indica el camino a seguir. Para empezar, le aconseja, es necesario decir la verdad a sus seres queridos.

La tolerancia y respeto hacia la diversidad humana, son expresadas sin tapujos ni ambigüedades, con la firmeza que el espíritu neoyorquino parece haberle infundido al autor, quien transmite de igual manera éstos valores al personaje de Julio.

La novela está repleta de situaciones humanas y universales, de diálogos brillantes y apropiados, y de personajes magistralmente desarrollados.

La trama, pintada con el color, luz y movimiento del vecindario que el autor conoce muy bien, es universal en descripción, luminosidad y energía.

Su bien construída prosa y su meticuloso argumento se alejan por mucho de la pedantería de otros autores que, víctimas de la arrogancia o del argumento fácilmente rentable, terminan infundiendo el desgano al lector.

Los lectores panhispánicos de la traducción de Julio Paredes Castro, tropezarán con expresiones lingüísticas del español del noreste estadounidense, y detalles de cultura popular regionales que le infunden a la narrativa de Quiñonez, autenticidad y dinámica propia.

Sin embargo, se observan en la traducción del inglés al español algunos errores ortográficos y tipográficos que, fuera de la voluntad del autor, son quizás productos de la insistencia de Rayo, la casa editora, en publicarla simultáneamente en ambos idiomas. Estos podrían ser corregidos en ediciones posteriores, pues pueden desviar la atención que los lectores acostumbrados a leer un español más depurado puedan darle a ésta brillante obra.

Aún sin leer la primera novela de Ernesto Quiñonez - nacido en Ecuador y criado en Nueva York, - la lectura de ésta, su segunda, me convenció del grado de mi ignorancia sobre los autores latinos de Estados Unidos.

Leeré El Vendedor de Sueños (Bodega Dreams, 2001), laudada en elogios por la crítica y favorecida en ventas. Después, esperaré la próxima entrega de Ernesto Quiñonez, con la ansiedad con la que espero las obras de autores consagrados internacionalmente.

Gr 1-5-Handsome spreads showcase 13 poems, each told from the perspective of a different cat and all abounding with feline attitude. There is "Tough Tom," with scratched-up nose and torn ear, who slips into a house and embraces a new life: "At first I was scared./I was used to rooftops/And rain/And snow/And dark./And fighting with other cats./But you opened the window/And I walked in." The aptly named "Princess Sheba Darling," posed gracefully to best display her snow-white fur, deigns to express what is instantly obvious to anyone who sees her: "As hard as I try, I could never be more beautiful/Than I am/Now." With a coat the "color of night," sleek Minnie steals through the moonlit countryside, proud that only her "Bright/Yellow/Eyes" give her location away. Effectively utilizing mood-setting rhythms, cadences, and word choices, each first-person free-verse selection perfectly suits the personality of its particular subject. Moser's lovely watercolor paintings depict each feline, individualized through distinctive coat, body language, and illuminating facial expressions. Playful action scenes alternate with more stately portraits, further enhancing each offering's tone and adding visual interest. Cats—with their differences in personality and physicality—get their moment in the sun in this attractive book. Speaking directly to the reader, these cats, like some you may know personally, have their own opinions. Sylvie, the boss cat, looking as much like a lion as a house pet, likes just three things: My food / My windowsill / My people. Black-and-white Romeo is a lover. He even loves Sylvie. Simon likes to pounce so much that he is put in the pantry, and Eddie closes his eyes to pretend you’re not there at all. Each cat gets its own two-page spread with a piece of poetry and an evocative watercolor featuring a feline so present readers may want to reach out and touch it (or in some cases, not). There are a few minor missteps: Lily’s rodent friend looks more like a lab rat than a barn mouse, and sometimes a poem goes for the obvious. But several are quite touching, including the one about Tough Tom, with his torn ear and scratched nose, who is afraid to walk through a new window but does so anyway. Beautiful

I read this book out loud this morning to four classes in grades 1 through 5, and all of the students enjoyed it.

The poems are brief and range in mood from touching to funny. Each, told from the cat's point of view, is a concise character study. The children grasped immediately that human beings could share the cats' personalities and situations.

The watercolor paintings are simply superb. They are large and simple enough to be visible to a whole class at story time. I think that even a very young child would enjoy looking at them, but they would also enchant adult cat-lovers.

This book reminds me partially of the cat portion in the Our Animal Friends At Maple Hill Farm book.

Loving the Sarah, Plain and Tall stories from my childhood I was curious what I would find in a picture book from Patricia MacLachlan and I'm enchanted. This book reminds me partially of the cat portion in the Our Animal Friends At Maple Hill Farm book. Each page is an image of a cat and poetic text in a description. It is absolutely lovely and full of personality. Yes I do think this ail make a fun children's picture book, but even more I think this will be a fabulous gift idea for anyone that loves cats.
