Makes it easy
By Patricia R. Andersen
Did you know that needleworks is now "cool" - that various actresses knit and do needlepoint while on the set, waiting to be called? Needlepoint is a very intriguing hobby that may appear to be more difficult than what it is, but with the proper instruction, you can be stitching beautiful stuff in no time.
Although this is an older book (1955), M's Brooks Pickens and M's White managed to keep it timeless by writing clear, concise instructions on everything from picking out needlepoint for your home to matching your needlepointed pieces to your period furniture. I realize that most of us probably don't need the knowledge of the last part, but it's still interesting to know these kind of things from the historical perspective.
THe book is filled with black and white illustrations, as well as black and white photos detailing ecverything from the simplest (cutting the yarn) to the bargello and trame' stitch. THe combination of instructions with the photo or illustration makes this book extremely helpful for beginners as well as those who have some experience.
If you want to learn about needlepoint, this is a very good book to start your aspiring hobby. If you already know about needlepoint, this is a good book to add to your library from the practical as well as the historical perspective. So come on - learn a new hobby or perfect your skills in your hobby. This book will help you.

all around bad
By sara morgan
I grew up reading the Berenstain Bears and loved to look at the pictures and I now appreciate the lessons learned. Too bad the newer books don't measure up. This book is terrible on so many levels. The pictures are no where near as good as they used to be. The Bear family goes to visit a battle field, among other places. Sister ask why they were fighting, and Papa answers her with a very abstract non-answer. They look at stones that "mark the graves of the soldiers who fell in battle." A child has no idea what that sentence means, what is a grave?, what do you mean 'fell in battle'? The ending is confusing because they do other stuff, including stay at a motel, but then Honey bear is already asleep when the pick her up from the grandparents. They whole thing was strange, and confusing. Such a disappointment. The writing is sub par, as well as the pictures. I would give zero stars if I could.

Totally Great Book!!!
By Miss Howe
Just when I think it can't be done, just when I think I've read every Berenstain Bear topic to my four-year-old, just when I think that the Berenstains' can't possible come up with any additional book ideas..... it happens! What is the "it?" It being that I come across another new Berestain Bear title for a dirt cheap price on Amazon. This story fits into the Berenstain Bear genre wonderfully. It's a classic Mom & Pop know best book. The cubs (Brother and Sister) have thought of their own ways to spend their family vacation. However, Baby Honey Bear goes to Gramp's and Gran's house and the Bear Family hits the open road to start their family vacation. Brother and Sister are rather annoyed at the beginning of the car trip, but Momma and Papa Bear help them see the light of the value of the simple things in life. Any Berenstain Bear lover needs this book. I recommend you order it today on Amazon.

Red, White, and Greens: The Italian Way with Vegetables, by Faith Willinger

Faith Willinger, a contributing editor to Gourmet magazine who was called "the ultimate source for information on Italian food"by the New York Times , here offers 150 simple, elegant, and diverse vegetable dishes that reflect the creativity and flavor of her adopted country.

Italians do the most exciting things with vegetables. The same ingenious creativity that resulted in some of the world's greatest art, architecture, design, literature, fashion, and music is also applied to vegetables. " With this in mind, Faith Willinger, who has lived in Italy for more than 20 years, brings the honest and delicious vegetable recipes she has discovered there back to America. The dishes come from friends and family all over the Italian peninsula, from the Dolomites to the tip of Reggio Calabria, and showcase a wide range of ingredients, styles, and techniques. Each recipe highlights the Italian ability to create exquisite dishes out of the simplest, freshest foods.

The 150 sensible, delicious, and easy-to-follow recipes include Garlic Bread Soup, Raddichio Lasagne, Garlic-Parsley Braised Artichokes, and Asparagus Carpaccio. Willinger offers variations on the recipes--such as adding a piece of meat or fish to some dishes--as well as backgrounds and fascinating history and lore. Red, White, and Greens offers advice from a well-respected expert on how to make abundant, inexpensive, and healthy vegetables taste their best.

Amazon.com Review
For those who immediately associate Italian cooking with meatballs and red sauce, Faith Willinger has a treat. She has composed a cookbook of everyday, family Italian recipes that rely on vegetables and tradition. Each chapter features a specific vegetable, offering recipes and entertaining explanations on the traditional purpose of specific dishes. Try Carmignano fennel seed-spiced dried figs or Torquato's Rice and Cabbage Soup--her concoctions are creative yet simple to make.

From Publishers Weekly
Accomplishing what few, if any, have done before, Willinger (Eating In Italy) has made everyday, often spontaneous Italian vegetable recipes (rarely written down in Italy) accessible to American cooks. She arranges the recipes by vegetable (or vegetables, e.g., broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli rabe are grouped together) and opens each chapter with an entertaining, informative look at the use of the subject over time and its preparation today; a list of recipes in the chapter is a surprisingly helpful addition. Making the most of seasonal bounties, recipes are simple and often unexpected. Carmignano Fennel Seed-Spiced Dried Figs are stuffed with walnuts and fennel seeds and layered with bay leaves for flavor. Torquato's Rice and Cabbage Soup uses the same rice as risotto but does not require constant stirring. Pantelleria Potato Salad is dotted with capers and olives, and Chicken with Peppers, Piedmont-style substitutes chicken for rabbit in a traditional stew. In Italy, pasta often serves as a last-minute meal or first course, and most chapters include a few quickly prepared pasta recipes: Giuliano's Garlicky Artichoke Spaghetti, Signora Ada's Penne with Squash Sauce and Pasta with Mushroom and Chicken Liver Sauce. An "Italian Pantry" section covering pasta, rice and other essentials rounds out this authentic and practical effort.

From Library Journal
Willinger, an American who has lived in Florence for many years, considers herself a "born-again" Tuscan. A frequent contributor to Gourmet magazine and the author of Eating in Italy (LJ 6/15/89), she presents 150 recipes that show Italian vegetable cookery at its best, from Florentine Artichoke Tortino to Pantelleria Potato Salad. Her recipes come via family and friends?including husband Massimo, a Florentine who doesn't believe in the existence of butter (olive oil is always better); housekeeper Maria, a natural cook from Apulia; Massimo's Aunt Enza, "a Tuscan classic"; and Torquato, Willinger's favorite vendor at the farmer's market, among many others. There are also recipes from fellow food writers and from favorite trattorias?some of them obscure, many from Florence's Cibreo, whose chef, one of the author's favorite "home-style cooks," has gained an international reputation. This wonderful collection of vegetable dishes from a spirited and knowledgeable writer is highly recommended.

Lots of Facts and Recipes, but not essential.
By B. Marold
`Red, White & Greens' is on `The Italian Way with Vegetables' by one of the leading distaff Anglo-Saxon interpreters of Italian cuisine, Faith Willinger, who joins Joyce Goldstein, Lynne Rosetto Kasper, Nancy Harmon Jenkins, and Claudia Roden in the very demanding footsteps of Elizabeth David in providing us with an understanding of Italian cuisine.

Unlike many of the superb books by the likes of Marcella Hazan and Lydia Bastianich, these authors, like David, want to go behind the recipes and give us some feel for the analysis, history, geography, botany, and culture of Italian cuisine. Ms. Willinger in this book is focusing on vegetables in a way that is somewhat different from her closest competitor, Jack Bishop, with his book, `The Complete ItalianVegetarian Cookbook'. And, before I go any further, if all you want is Italian recipes with vegetables, then Bishop's book will definitely give you more of what you want than Ms. Willinger's older and shorter volume.

When I started in on Ms. Willinger's book, I quickly became wary of her statement that the Italians like vegetables because they taste good. Almost every authority I have read on the matter, including some which go back to Renaissance cooking, are pretty clear on the fact that Italians like vegetables because they were poor and so many good vegetables could be gathered from the wild.

As I was docking the author for her faulty history, I largely gave her back most of her points when I saw how she treated her subject once we got into the individual vegetables. Unlike Mr. Bishop who organizes his recipes by type of dish, Ms. Willinger treats each of her nineteen headline vegetables in a separate chapter. Note that while there are only nineteen chapters, many more species are discussed. The chapter on artichokes, for example, also deals with cardoons and there is but one chapter on all of mushrooms.

The selection of recipes is not meant to be complete or even a selection of the most popular dishes. The chapter on artichokes, for example, does not include the famous `carciofi alla giudea' of Rome. In fact, most of the recipes are identified with the name of the individual from whom Ms. Willinger cribbed the procedure.

This book is a bit of a lightweight compared to many, but it has a lot of historical and botanical information you may not find elsewhere. It is an excellent addition to any library on Italian cuisine, but if you have Elizabeth Schneider's `Vegetables from Amaranth to Zucchini' and Jack Bishop's book, you will probably not miss this volume.

Repetitive and overhyped
By A Customer
I buy cookbooks as much for the reading material as for the recipes, but in this case, reading carefully brings out the worst in the book. Willinger seems to have keyed her computer to spit out the same few sentences every time she mentions Tuscany ( a lot) or a certain Torquato (the man she buys vegetables from, so he also rates many mentions) or the almanac from which she gets much of her historical information. The recipes, too, disappoint. Many of them are the sort of thing you'd come up with on your own such as sauteeing a given vegetable in parsley, garlic, and olive oil. All in all, this is one of the most disappointing cookbook purchases I have made in a long time. The glowing reviews, of course, contributed to my sense of disappointed expectations, leading me to conclude that the world of cookbook publishing runs on the same hype that fuels potboilers.

When a girl is born to Chu Ju's family, it is quickly determined that the baby must be sent away. After all, the law states that a family may have only two children, and tradition dictates that every family should have a boy. To make room for one, this girl will have to go.

Fourteen-year-old Chu Ju knows she cannot allow this to happen to her sister. Understanding that one girl must leave, she sets out in the middle of the night, vowing not to return.

With luminescent detail, National Book Award-winning author Gloria Whelan transports readers to China, where law conspires with tradition, tearing a young woman from her family, sending her on a remarkable journey to find a home of her own.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-In present-day rural China, 14-year-old Chu Ju's mother gives birth to her second child, another girl. When her grandmother makes plans to sell the baby, Chu Ju decides to leave home. Perhaps then her family will keep little Hua and her parents will try again for a boy. After finding work on a sampan and becoming like a daughter to the fisherman's wife, she tells her story, and the woman is so horrified that she wants her to return home immediately. Forced to move on once more, the teen ends up in the household of Han Na, whose son wants to leave the rice paddies and go to Shanghai. Here Chu Ju proves her worth, making the paddy more productive using modern techniques she learns from her neighbor and friend Ling, caring for Han Na as she becomes increasingly weak, and rescuing her unfortunate son from jail in the city. Finally, having achieved a sense of self-worth, she goes back to see her family, but only to visit as she has made a life on the land bequeathed to her by Han Na. Whelan skillfully shows the mixture of past and present that is characteristic of rural China. She conveys the feelings of a nation on the brink of change, a country whose young people are trying out new ways of doing things, yet are clear about what traditional values are important to retain.

Gr. 6-9. When Chu Ju is 14 years old, her mother gives birth to a second daughter. Rural China policy restricts families to two children, and when Chu Ju's bitter grandmother convinces the parents to put the new baby up for adoption, leaving space in the family for a possible boy "to care for us in our old age," Chu Ju runs away. She wanders, finding sporadic work and shelter, until she comes upon a loving home with an aging farmer and becomes a skilled farmer herself. As in Homeless Bird (2000) and Angel on the Square (2001), Whelan tells a compelling adventure story, filled with rich cultural detail, about a smart, likable teenage girl who overcomes society's gender restrictions. Whelan skillfully weaves in just enough cultural context to support the story, while her atmospheric details bring the green Chinese landscape to life. Most compelling, though, is brave, clearly drawn Chu Ju, whose intelligence and good heart win her land, family respect, and the promise of romance by the story's end. Gillian Engberg

OK, good book but cultural history timeline seems a bit off
By L Taylor
Read in daughter's book club. The era the book was written for doesn't seem to match the plot/setting, a bit confusing. Those growing up in China during the time the book was set indicated that the culture described is older and not what they experienced. Expect more from historical fiction for things like timeline matching culture and events. Unfortunate, otherwise a good book if it were set 40 years(?) earlier. I'd defer to residents of the areas described on the accuracy or lack-thereof though.

Another classic Gloria Whelan book
By hiphopgirl_1000
14-year-old Chu Ju lives in a rural Chinese village where according to culture boys are far more valued than girls. Her mother is pregnant again and the whole family prays for a son, because they know the strict rules of 2 children per family would not permit them to have another child if the baby turned out to be a girl. Unfortunately, Chu Ju's new sibling turns out to be another girl. Chu Ju's grandmother is very bitter at the result and convinces the family to put the girl up for adoption and hopefully have another child that will be a boy. Chu Ju is devastated when she hears of her family's plan and she decides to run away so her baby sister will not have to suffer. Little does Chu Ju know how important this journey will be to her life and self-realization. Told over several years, Chu Ju's journey brings her many hardships, but joy as well. She goes from village to village finding an assortment of jobs, such as working on a silkfarm, a fishing boat, and working in the rice paddies. In the end, Chu Ju realizes she made the right decision and you know she will be happy since she has found her true love and a family that accepts her for who she is and not her gender.
Being a 2nd-generation Asian-American this book hit very close to home. Unfortunately this type of gender discrimination is very common in many of China's rural villages which still go by old customs and have not been educated in the new modern ways. This topic was probably very tough to write on, but I think Gloria Whelan did a great job touching on both sides of the issue. Like Homeless Bird, she has created another great story of a girl who had courage to face the odds.

Worthy of your time AND money
By Komputer kitten
Gloria Whelan, author of The Island Trilogy and Homeless Bird, follows through with the superb story of a young girl named Chu Ju who must flee from her family's home so that her baby sister may have life. This is a touching account of the sad reality of female experiences in a society where males are prized and females are denigrated. Though this is a book with a female protagonist, this is a book that appeals equally to both boys and girls. Although some of the relationships featured in the book seem hyperbolized and farfetched, the truthful actuality of the matter is that there are many instances where girls are treated even worse.

Chu Ju's House is a treasure for any library. Whelan is marvelous at forming a story that makes you want to reach out and help Chu Ju. It is inspiring and eye-opening, beautiful and heart-wrenching, and easy-to-read yet difficult to swallow. With uncomplicated language and written in first-person narrative, Chu Ju's House is effortlessly comprehensible. An excellent choice of a book for classroom discussion, Chu Ju's House is full of instances that children can relate to: the torturous feeling of being unaccepted, and of feeling worthless and unwanted. Which child has never felt left out and alone? This is a book that not only touches on these topics, but wholly revolves around it. Chu Ju's House is a good read for child and adult alike. It teaches the values of self-acceptance and forgiveness, and inner strength when everyone is seemingly at odds with what you need and want.

Amazon.com Review
Michael S. Sanders describes the birth of a ship with the love of a parent, relating how the naval destroyer USS Donald Cook was "assembled over four years piece by piece, steel plate by steel plate, from the first half-moon slices of keel to topmost radar mast, almost by hand." The Yard is a land-based tale focusing on the thousands of men and women in Bath, Maine, who practice the old craft of shipbuilding. Their business has adapted itself to modern ways, but Sanders intriguingly shows how ancient Phoenicians would nevertheless recognize important parts of today's construction process. Sanders spends plenty of time explaining what goes into making a ship: the engineering, the materials, and the labor. He also tells of an industry in peril, as American shipyards compete against foreign builders whose governments subsidize their work. Yet The Yard is ultimately about ordinary people who build: "electricians, pipefitters, welders, braziers, tinknockers, riggers, anglesmiths, straighteners, blasters, and shipfitters" plus "legions of naval architects, draftsmen, and marine engineers." The Yard may lack the dazzle of Blind Man's Bluff and its stories of submarine espionage, but it will hold a similarly strong attraction for readers drawn to human endeavor on the open sea and what makes it possible. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
This book is richAin content, in texture and not least in integrity. Sanders has been a ghostwriter, but he finds his own voice in this story of a shipyard, a ship and their people. The yard is the Bath Iron Works (BIW), in Maine, and it has been building ships for more than a century. The ship is the U.S.S. Donald Cook, a state-of-the-art destroyer. From the first rough sizing of the plates to the actual launching takes almost four years. Sanders's greatest triumph is his description of shipbuilding processes in language that a lay reader can readily understand. His second achievement is his depiction of the shipyard culture. Sanders eschews an elegiac approach, depicting a shipbuilding community whose ties and loyalties cut across management-labor lines. Shipbuilding is a skilled craft that demands a synergy of strength and artistry. It is dirty. It is dangerous. And BIW's employees merit respect for their skills. At the book's end BIW, rather than fading from the scene, is poised to enter the 21st century at the cutting edge of ship construction. When the navy takes over, the Cook becomes the focus of a different but equally effective kind of crew. The shipyard community is local, coming largely from Bath itself, and it is essentially male. The Cook's commissioning crew is cosmopolitan, with a broad spectrum of backgrounds and experiences, and it includes three dozen women. The men and women who serve on the Cook are like their ship and its builders: among the best in the world. Sanders's own craftsmanship is as worthy of recognition as that of the shipbuilders whose story he so ably tells. Illustrations not seen by PW. (Nov.)

From Kirkus Reviews
An unhurried, meticulous, character-rich portrait of the Bath Iron Works, where the navy's destroyers are built, is the subject of Maine writer Sanderss first book. The massive complex of ways, cranes, and hangars along Maine's Kennebec River, the Bath Iron Works, has been fashioning grand and enormous ships for over a century. Its more than just an economic mainstay of the state, as Sanderss history and tour of the works makes plain: its an institution that has as much to do with the art and pride of shipbuilding as it does with employing 5,000 workers: pipe fitters, marine architects, braziers, draftsmen, tinknockers, riggers, anglesmiths, straighteners, and blasters. These days the works feels fortunate to be one of only six remaining active naval shipyards in the UScommercial ships are built at subsidized yards in Korea, Finland, Russia, and Japanand as the navy downsizes, its a precarious existence. Sanders follows the building of the destroyer USS Donald Cook, from first torch cut to commissioning, a massive enterprise where welders become performance artists, smithies pound red-hot steel in cavernous penumbral furnace buildings like something out of Norse mythology, crane operators nurse into position steel slabs weighing hundreds of tons, sometimes by increments of an inch and not by computer control, but by the delicate touch of experienced hands on levers. And as this ship is a fighting vessel, there is included a short course on modern warfare at sea, in which naval engagements are carried out at great, and what feel like anesthetizing, distances. Sanders chooses his words caringly, working with an engineer's precision, a formal elegance, whereas the comments he records from the shipbuilders are more casual and a relief. Sanders depicts the works as part of a remarkable and increasingly rare industry that fuses technological innovation with proud craftsmanship and a work ethic that makes a shipfitter's affectionate patting of a 9,000-ton hull a very natural gesture. Superb! A well written and accurate portrait of "The Yard"
By Mike Powers
Hard hats off to Michael Sanders for a magnificent book! He has presented a thoroughly researched and extremely well written account of life inside Bath Iron Works. In the space of only 236 pages, he manages to portray just how difficult and dangerous an occupation shipbuilding is.(I know; I currently work at Bath Iron Works and spent several months on the USS Donald Cook.) I found the book to contain just the right combination of the basics of ship design and construction, and a wonderful human interest story. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Wow!
By julian fischer
I could not put this book down. "The Yard" is without a doubt the best industrial/military history I have read in years. Sanders delivers a complete understanding of the incredible complexity in building a warship, the interactions of the many trades involved, the context of the community and the workers, and the military-industrial dialogue necessary to the realization of the Aegis program. In addition, Sanders , in the most dramatic and eloquent chapter, describes in detail the launching of the Donald S. Cooke, a process with technological antecedents to the beginnings of shipbuilding history. Because of competition from technically advanced shipbuilding yards, Bath Ironworks will launch its last vessel from the traditional ways this winter. A massive renovation of the yard with a floating drydock for launching vessels is currently underway . Sanders has done a superb job describing the entire process from the first steel bending to the menu served on the comissioning cruise. He deserves top honors for "The Yard".

The compelling story behind a warship
By Kurt A. Greiner
This book details the building and fitting out of an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the Donald Cook, at Bath Iron Works, Maine. From the initial design, cutting and bending plate, assembling the modules, installation, launch, crew training and trials, the whole process is described through the stories of the men and woman who build and work on the Destroyers. A number of photographs and illustrations help the reader to understand the various processes involved, although the book is mostly text. Sanders has an easy writing style that lets him relate complex details in an easily understandable way. When you put this book down, you will have a greater understanding of not only warship construction, but why people do difficult, dangerous work for less than they might make elsewhere. You will also learn a bit about piloting, how to launch a large ship, and the lore of commissioning ceremonies, and even the training of a ship's crew.
I really enjoyed this book a lot, and recommend it to those interested in modern warships and their construction.

Mediterranean Grains and Greens: A Book of Savory, Sun-Drenched Recipes, by Paula Wolfert

Paula Wolfert is passionate about theMediterranean -- its landscape, its people, its culture, and above all, its rich culinary tradition. Her five earlier cookbooks celebrated the sensuous pleasures of the Mediterranean kitchen and introduced a previously uninitiated American audience to an exciting new way of cooking and eating.

In her eagerly awaited Mediterranean Grains and Greens, Wolfert continues that tradition, focusing on the delectable grains and greens-based dishes she discovered as she spent five years traversing the Mediterranean region, from Spain in the west toIsrael, Lebanon, and Syria in the east, with stops in France, Italy, Turkey, and Greece.

Here are bountiful breads (Mirsini's Spiced Barley Bread); mouthwatering pastries (Spicy Beef, Olives, and Capers in Semolina Pastry Turnovers); nourishing comfort soups (Garlic Soup with Leafy Greens); crisp salads of mixed greens, cooked green salads, and savory grain salads (Samira's Tabbouleh with Parsley, Bulgur, Cinnamon, and Cumin); unusual desserts (Tunisian Homemade Couscous with Golden Raisins); and accompanying sauces, condiments, and seasonings. Though Mediterranean Grains and Greens is not a vegetarian cookbook, meat, fish, and poultry, when they appear, are used primarily as condiments and flavor enhancers rather than the main focus of a meal.

Throughout, Wolfert explains the historical and cultural significance of her dishes, sharing traditional preparation techniques as well as her adaptations for the American home kitchen. Ever conscious of the availability of ingredients in this country, she recommends readily available alternatives found in grocery stores and farmer's markets. Whether foraging for wild "apron greens" in the Turkish countryside, "listening" to risotto in Venice to tell if it's ready to eat, making homemade rustic pasta on the island of Crete, baking Sardinian flatbread the old-fashioned way, scrambling eggs with kofte along the Euphrates, or preparing the unusual "black paellas" of Valencia, Paula Wolfert shares her adventures in the engaging first-person stories that accompany each recipe. This comprehensive collection invites Paula Wolfert's loyal fans and followers to rediscover the joys of Mediterranean living, cooking, and eating right along with her. Like her earlier works, the enticing, wide-ranging Mediterranean Grains and Greens is destined to become a kitchen classic, a book that every serious cook, armchair traveler, and lover of good food will want to own.

Amazon.com Review
Paula Wolfert's Mediterranean Grains and Greens shares her adventures as a cultural explorer. Her discoveries show the probing of a culinary scholar and the passion of a true amateur. The result is a rich tapestry of information, images, and alluring recipes. Even if you don't cook, you will be entranced as this culinary Scheherazade spins her tales of a thousand-and-one discoveries and delights, which, in this case, are all real.

Typically, Wolfert introduces her recipe for Wheatberries, Lentils, and Rice with Fresh Herbs by regaling you with information about many other pulse-and-grain dishes from Spain to the Middle East that you have probably never heard of. She then enchants you with the story of how a Cretan chef shared this particular recipe, and explains that on Crete, there are three names for this type of soup: one is rooted in ancient times, one is linked to a local festival, and the third uses a play on words.

Few recipes in this, Wolfert's fifth cookbook on the Mediterranean region, are familiar. Her goal is to open our eyes to ingredients like green wheat, farro, mallow, and Tuscan kale. Some of the work records recipes for earthy, traditional dishes that are fast disappearing from the table as women in Mediterranean countries no longer have the time to make them, and as prosperity pulls people away from this "cooking of the poor." This book should also inspire wider demand for wild greens such as tart purslane, spinach-like lamb's quarters, grains like farro, and other unfamiliar Mediterranean ingredients. Wolfert also suggests substitutes, since many of the greens are interchangeable with chard, arugula, watercress, or spinach.

For simple dishes, try Escarole Stuffed with Capers, Golden Raisins, and Pine Nuts; Egyptian koshery, a blend of rice, lentils, pasta, and browned onions; and Winter Squash Pilaf with Bulgur. Bread bakers will be intrigued by recipes that use barley, semolina, and chickpeas. --Dana Jacobi

From Publishers Weekly
In this return to the well of Mediterranean cooking, Wolfert (Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean; Mediterranean Cooking) takes an agreeable, sensible approach. Rather than repeating early recipes, she directs readers to the books in which they appear, and instead of trying to adapt recipes for dishes that would be patently impossible to re-create here, she simply describes such delicacies as Cretan "Scarf" Pies, filled with an elaborate collection of wild greens, in appealing sidebars. Nevertheless, there are plenty of challenges and specialties, e.g., Honeycomb Tripe Stew with Celery, Parsley, and Sardo Cheese and Homemade Cretan Rustic Pasta with goat's milk and skinned wheat. Young Mustard Greens with Pomegranate Molasses is a simple dish?for readers who can get their hands on pomegranate molasses. Wolfert can always be counted on to deliver some real discoveries: The Monk's Pizza with Pan-Seared Cabbage, made with a yeastless dough; Black Sea-Style Chard Bundles Filled with Veal, Toasted Corn Kernels, and Fresh Mint; and Bran-Crusted Barbecued Whole Fish with Chard Stem Tahini Sauce. Wolfert's expertise lies in linking the various Mediterranean cuisines, as in the highly informative mini-essays on rough-hewn pastas such as fregula, couscous, miftool and mhamma, and on Spanish rice dishes that accompany recipes like Tunisian Fish Couscous with Pumpkin and Leafy Greens and Black Rice with Mussels and Shrimp.

From Library Journal
Wolfert, whose love affair with the Mediterranean began decades before it became the culinary darling of the food world, has written another impressive cookbook on its specialties, from the rice dishes of Spain to the couscous of Morocco. The more than 150 recipes include dishes from most of the countries in between, from Provencal France to Greece to Tunisia. As always, Wolfert's recipes are as authentic as possible, which means that in some cases they may be somewhat time-consuming or require harder-to-find ingredients (a good source guide is included), but this quest for authenticity is part of what makes her book so impressive. Although greens (she's particularly interested in wild Mediterranean greens) and grains are the focus, these are not necessarily vegetarian dishes, and Chicken Camargue-Style and Grilled Fish Stuffed with Seafood and Moroccan Charmoula, for example, are featured along with other delicious possibilities. Highly recommended.

A book for Real Food lovers.....
By Anastasia
I had high expectations for this book when I had a look at it on Amazon. What appealed to me especially was that it was a book about greens and grains. I wasn't disappointed. It is a very romantic book, telling tales of the author, Paul Wolfert's experiences with cooks in traditional regions. Whilst these anecdotes are interesting, and lend a traditional flavour to the book, I would have appreciated more recipes. In one part of the book she spoke of how many hundreds of recipes she'd collected in her travels, but they're not all in the book - rats!

This book is a delight... surprises such as a recipe for real, authentic Cous Cous, made the old-fashioned way! The first recipe I tried, Garlic Soup with Leafy Greens from Spain, was absolutely DELICIOUS, and has become a family favourite (even my kids eat it!!!) I have the need to have a number of recipes on hand that aren't based on animal or dairy products, and I have found that very many of her recipes, if they include these ingredients, look as if they could easily be adapted not to include them. Being someone who really loves vegetables, this is a great book. This isn't one of the new types of books from chefs with 'good ideas', they are recipes which have stood the test of time, and proven themselves delectable.

There are also good looking recipes for many different types of grains. She has recipes such as: 'Rusk Salad with Tomatoes, Capers, Olives and Lemon' from Greece (and all the tourists get is the standard Greek salad!); Mirsini's Spiced Barley Bread; Field Greens, Rice and Pumpkin Torta (Italy); Black Sea Soup with Cornmeal, Leafy Greens, and Mushrooms (Turkey); Medley of Wheat Berries, Lentils and Rice with Fresh Herbs (Greece); Summer Sorrel and Chervil Soup (France).... Ok, I'm getting hungry...

I like the book, have used it a fair bit since I've bought it, but I don't think, however, it will top my favorite book 'Greek Monastery Cookery' by Archimandrite Dositheos, which is a compilation of recipes from the moasteries of Mount Athos in Greece. The recipes are traditional, (but which I don't recommend it for beginning cooks, one needs to have some experience as things such as cooking times and temperatures are not always included.)

I've given 4 stars due to the quality of the dishes already tried, but if it were packed full of recipes, like the monk's cookbook, it would rate a '5'.

One of My Favorite Cookbooks...
By Lisa Nicholson
Paula Wolfert is not known for her quick and easy recipes - but she IS known for authenitc, well tested regional Mediterranean recipes. I belong to a CSA, and often find myself with 2 pounds of dandelion greens or 5 pounds of turnips, etc. When I'm at a loss for what to do with those extra greens, this is THE book I turn to. Most of the recipes here can be on the table in under two hours, which is quick for this type of cooking, and nothing I've ever made from this book has been bad. If you are looking for a great book for using grains and greens which are a bit uncommon in the typical American household, and are willing to spend a little extra time in the kitchen to prepare exceptional meals, this is very much worth having in your cookbook library.

Interesting from both a practical and an historical perspective. An early publication of what was to become a

About the Author

When Karen Romano Young was growing up, she and her sisters and brother spent most of their time exploring the wetlands down the road. The mill there was home to a woman who taught her about the wetlands and only once yelled at her for destroying frog eggs by stepping on them. These days the author lives near a marsh full of frogs in Bethel, Connecticut, with her husband, three children, two guinea pigs, a dog, and a cat.

In Her Own Words...

"My first published writing was a poem called My Secret Place. I wrote it in fourth grade, and it appeared in my local paper and in a book of 100 poems written by children in our school district. The place in the poem was a shady spot under trees, but more important was what I did there: write!

"I've kept a diary since I was nine, and as a child I wrote poems and stories and lots of letters. If I wasn't writing, I was reading. Everyone around me read-to themselves, to each other, to me. My grandmother has this saying framed on her wall: "Richer than 1, you will never be, for I had a mother who read to me." I'll add to that: My mother took me to the library-the Fairfield Children's Library in Fairfield, Connecticut, where I grew up. Once I was too old to have a child's card, I even worked there, looking after the picture books and children's novels all the way through high school and even on vacations home from my school, Syracuse University.

"Part of my college education was a semester in England, where I did an independent study of storytelling and folklore (especially, different versions of "Rumpelstiltskin") that took me all over the country reading and telling stories to children. At the end of college my English boyfriend, Mark Young, immigrated, and we got married in Connecticut.

"My first job was writing for Scholastic's news magazines-the ones kids use in their classrooms to learn about the news and lots of other things. What a cool job: interviewing all sorts of people, doing tons of research, writing on a very short deadline. It was hard and colorful and lively and exciting, and I spent every day in New York City. I had gone to college to learn to be a teacher-but now I was hooked on writing for a living and never went back to teaching.

"After our daughter Bethany was born, I decided I didn't need a New York office--or even a spot under the trees--to be able to write. I stayed home and worked in the spare bedroom. I wrote for all kinds of children's magazines, covering everything from rock climbing to rocket science.

"Around the time Sam was born, I began writing nonfiction books. I've written about so many different things, but I especially love writing about people and all the different ways they live their lives: high-wire artists, Arctic scientists, a lady who tap-danced across the Golden Gate Bridge, and a man who walked all the way around the world.

"When Emily was born, writing time was tight. But I had lots of time to think. During high school I had written a picture book called The Blue Volkswagen. Now I began thinking about where that old Beetle might be these days. One day I took the kids to the library. Outside, a woman was selling prints of her photographs. One of them showed an old Beetle sitting in the doorway of a barn. I bought it, took it home, and began writing a story in the twenty minutes a day I had to myself. I didn't write about my real self or about anything that had really happened to me, but I tried to think of my story as I would have felt or acted if I were Daisy living in that farmhouse at that time. After The Beetle and Me came Video, and more and more stories after that.

"My husband, children, dog, cat, guinea pigs, and I have a small, noisy, weird house in the Connecticut woods. Our lives are full of books, and we all read every chance we get. I write everyplace: in the kitchen, in the car, in the barn, in the school parking lot, in the Reading Room at the New York Public Library, at the beach. I write and write and write...."

Of all the players in the little league, Harold was the littlest.

No matter how hard he tries, Harold is no good at baseball. The ground balls always bounce over his head, and his little legs never get him to the pop flies fast enough. So the only place Coach Lombardi puts him is on the bench. Until one day, during a very important game, Harold gets his big chance to show that being little isn't so bad after all.

My Son's Favorite Book
By Mrs. Robinson
"The Littlest Leaguer" was my son's favorite book of all time. He passed away recently, so I wanted to make sure that every little boy who ever loved baseball reads this book. It was odd because my son and I talked about this book not long before he died suddenly.

An organization I belong to told me they wanted to donate a book to the library in his memory. Because I was an elementary librarian, I wanted the book to be a children's book.

"The Littlest Leaguer" will be perfect. If your child has never read this book, now is the time. It teaches them that any dream is possible.
