Written by an avowed fan, the book is short on biographical details but overflows with information about Garland's career from 1929 until her death. Each of her films (including shorts) is thoroughly covered, as are all known radio broadcasts, records, concerts, and television appearances. Contemporary reviews and trivia are interpersed throughout a short text that examines Garland in different stages of her career. Profusely illustrated and including song and name indexes, this book provides information that is not easily accessible elsewhere. Many other books have examined Garland both on stage and off, but this is an exhaustive (some might say exhausting) study of her professional career. A treat for Garland fans and entertainment trivia buffs.

Great Book!

I thought this book had great pictures! It showed all the movies she had been in and some of the people she worked with told what they thought about her. It even tells about her t.v. show and tours she went on. Judy garland in AMAZING!

PreSchool-Grade 2–Peter Cottontail (aka the Easter Bunny) is sick with a cold, and he has asked his pal, the friendly though massive dinosaur from T. Rex Trick-or-Treats (HarperCollins, 2005), to step in for him. Although willing, T. Rex is not a natural for the role, and he doesn't get much support from his friends Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, and Iguanodon. However, they come to his rescue, tracking down eggs from Duck, Goose, and Turkey, and even one from Screech Owl, to replace those that went kersplat during his shell-shattering attempt at hopping. It is not until after all the deliveries are made that they begin to crack open, and dozens of tiny ducks started quacking! And dozens of tiny geese started honking! And dozens of tiny turkeys started gobbling!... And one tiny screech owl started screeching!, making it the best, although noisiest, Easter ever. Although this story is slight, T. Rex displays an admirable generosity of spirit that nearly matches his great size. Lois G. Grambling has written numerous award-winning picture books, including Can I Have a Stegosaurus, Mom? Can I? Please!?, illustrated by H. B. Lewis; The Witch Who Wanted to be a Princess, illustrated by Judy Love; and Daddy Will be There, illustrated by Walter G. Kessel. She lives in upstate New York with her husband, Arthur.

Jack E. Davis has illustrated two picture books by Daniel Pinkwater: The Picture of Morty and Ray and Yo-yo Man. Other books he has illustrated include the New York Times bestseller Marsupial Sue by John Lithgow. He is a recipient of the New York Society of Illustrators Gold Medal Award for Humor. He lives and paints goofy pictures in Port Townsend, Washington.

The story was lame but the illustrations are cute and it kept my 4 and 7 year old's attentions while I read it. I wouldn't buy it again though.

Cute story and illustrations but don't plan on making egg salad!

I ordered this book for my 5 year old grandson who is really into dinosaurs. He really enjoyed having it read to him and thought it was funny.
He observes every detail in the illustrations, they show broken raw eggs. At the end the donated eggs hatched live birds. When we were dying Easter eggs later he kept asking me when they would hatch and what kind of birds they would be. You can imagine how he reacted later when his mommy used them for egg salad! He thought she killed the little birds! Cute story but a little confusing for a little kid who truly believes. I explained away his concerns but he STILL wouldn't eat the egg salad! :)

Although Shakespeare's works have touched people everywhere, very little is known of his life. Well-loved author and illustrator Aliki pulls together clues from writings, drawings, history, birth, marriage, and death records, and from Shakespeare's own plays, in this vibrant introduction to one of the greatest writers of all time.

Cleverly arranged as a play, with an aside and acts one through five, the book features a quotation from one of Shakespeare's plays on every spread. Bite-sized chunks of text are interspersed with the lovely detailed illustrations Aliki is famous for, making what might be a difficult subject very accessible. In addition, there are charts listing Shakespeare's plays, a chronology of his life, sidebars with mini-biographies of significant people in his life, and a partial list of words and expressions he invented (gloomy, moonbeam, mountaineer, zany, and bated breath, among 2,000 others!). William Shakespeare may get top billing in the title of this picture book, but the emphasis within is less certain. Aliki (Mummies Made in Egypt) doesn't investigate Shakespeare as a personality; dividing her work into five "acts," she focuses more on Elizabethan culture, dramatic conventions and living conditions, then shifts to Sam Wanamaker and the process of renovating the Globe in the 20th century. Aliki employs serviceable, almost pedestrian statements to convey the history, stretching occasionally toward cleverness. Of the open-ceilinged Globe, she comments, "When it rained, [the audience] knew it." The material on Wanamaker's restoration sheds light on the process by which the new Globe was built ("The first and only thatched roof in London since 1666"), although the character of Sam, with whom readers are meant to identify, remains bland. Pages are loaded with small panel illustrations of characters and historic figures in exaggerated poses. They capture a jolly theatrical spirit (nearly everyone in the quaint colored-pencil pictures wears a gentle smile), yet the many crowd scenes do not repay scrutiny. Unlike Diane Stanley's work in Bard of Avon, these pictures give only a broad idea of the historical context. Quotations from the bard populate the margins, and numerous appendixes provide facts. The wide range of information here makes this book a useful introduction to Elizabethan theater, despite its disparate themes and generalized pictures. All ages. (May)

Grade 3-6-While this is one of the most appealing and responsible biographies of Shakespeare for this audience since Diane Stanley and Peter Vennema's Bard of Avon (Morrow, 1992), it is also a history of the Globe of the 17th century and of the recently completed facsimile of the theater built through the persistent efforts of Sam Wanamaker, an American actor. On the title page, readers see a picture of a boy sitting under a portrait of Shakespeare, constructing a model of the Globe. Sam's story is related in "Act Five" (the book is divided into acts and scenes rather than chapters). With deft economy of words, Aliki covers a broad range of Elizabethan theater history in addition to Shakespeare's life. She sets out the scenes in Stratford and London, and discusses the basics of playhouse building, Marlowe, Jonson, Elizabeth I, James I, principal actors, the plague, and something of the plays without losing focus. Her lively cartoon illustrations, which would pair quite happily with Marcia Williams's Tales from Shakespeare (Candlewick, 1998), blend with more finished framed portraits, maps, playhouse designs, and scenes from London life to expand and explain the spare text, both in picture and caption. Pertinent quotations from the plays are set as grace notes outside the main text. Addenda include a list of plays and poems, sites to visit, and an intriguing sampler of words and expressions found in Shakespeare. A thoroughly enjoyable and reliable introduction to the Bard.

Great for Junior High and Elementary Shakespeare students

This is a great resource for teaching Shakespeare to Junior High and even Elementary kids...but since I teach High School, most of it is a little too simplistic. Nice artwork and easily readable for the Junior High student. Arrived on time and in excellent condition.

A great intro to Shakespeare

This was a wonderful introduction to Shakespeare. I felt like it gave them enough information without going too indepth. It talked a bit about Will himself, as well as some of his contemporaries. It discussed the playhouse and social system of the time.

The book was written like a play, Act 1 Scene 2 and such and each page had a small quote from one of his plays. It also went on to describe Sam Wanamaker who started the project to rebuild the Globe in London.

Our favorite part was at the end where it showed a list of words and phrases that Shakespeare 'invented' like puke and Knock, Knock, Who's There? It also has a timeline of his life and plays.

For the third grade I thought this more than adequate coverage. We used this as a springboard to read some of his plays (written for children) and we're really enjoying those as well.

I think this book would be appropriate for K through 6th or 7th grade. You could possibly use it for older as well, but by that age they should be going a little more indepth, like Bard of Avon by Diane Stanley and the cartoonish drawings might not be appealing to older kids.

Great Introduction to the Globe

The presentation is clever. Aliki has organized her information into Acts, Scenes, and Asides, with Act Five being the work of Sam Wanamaker to recreate the Globe Theater. She has also laid out her prose text as if it were lines of poetry, furthering the playbook effect. I often checked the text to see if it was written in iambic pentameter (it isn't). The illustrations are lively and highly detailed.

The pages are very busy. Here are the contents of a typical page, from top to bottom: four lines from As You Like It; a drawing of Christopher Marlowe; an information box about the Rose Playhouse and builder Philip Henslowe's diaries; seven lines of text about the Admiral's Men and Marlowe; a drawing of three actors on a stage, surrounded by groundlings; the titles of sixteen Shakespeare plays superimposed in wavy lines over the drawing of the actors; a caption beneath; and a line from The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Aliki's efforts to squeeze as much as possible into this book sometimes become distracting. All of the illustrations have their own text boxes, with additional information provided in up to five sentences. Readers may have to keep backtracking in order to follow the narrative, and I sometimes wonder if texts like this are the best way to format nonfiction material.

There are more than 1000 books investigating the Dreyfus affair and its consequences for France in the 20th century. The central character of the affair, Alfred Dreyfus, often appears as little more than a person caught up in the much larger set of sociopolitical events dominated by the key political actors. Burns, professor at Mount Holyoke College and author of numerous articles and books on this era of European history, focuses his attention on Dreyfus and his family. While the book covers before and after the affair, the major objective is to examine the family during the decade-long affair. The author shows the role of Dreyfus's brother, Mathieu, in keeping the case before the public during its early years. An insightful look at a Jewish family in France as well as at the affair itself, this book will be of interest to scholars and to general readers interested in contemporary European history.

In 1894, at age 35, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, officer, father, and husband, enjoying success after many years of study, devotion, and discipline, was unaccountably arrested for high treason and thereby became a symbol--as victim to some and traitor to others-- of the imperfections in French military justice and the precarious position of Jews in French society. Now, after at least a thousand studies, novels, plays, and films of what came to be known as ``the Dreyfus affair,'' Burns (History/Mt. Holyoke) offers perhaps the first comprehensive study of Dreyfus the man, and of his family. The Dreyfus family history is typical of French Jews. Culturally assimilated after Jews were emancipated by the Edict of 1791, the Dreyfuses found financial opportunity in industry (textiles) and social status in the military, where young Alfred's intelligence, discipline, and methodical nature were rewarded with promotions, an appointment in Paris, and his marriage to a wealthy young Jewess, Lucy Hadamard. Without warning and without cause, however, he was arrested for treason on the basis of an unsigned document in someone else's handwriting, convicted in an irrational judicial process (he believed his crime was being a Jew), publicly humiliated, and deported to Devil's Island, where he spent five years in solitary confinement before his brother won his freedom with the confession of the true spy. Knighted in 1906, Dreyfus championed various working-class causes, served along with his son in WW I, and lived to see the scandal revived in the anti-Semitism of the 30's, finally dying in 1935, having outlived nearly everyone else involved in the affair. Because he was so undemonstrative--he ``lived,'' as his son said, an ``intense interior life''--Dreyfus remains inscrutable, even as the focus of such a carefully documented and analyzed study as this. And with minimal theorizing and offering little cultural context, the virulence of the anti-Semitism that trapped Dreyfus remains unexplained, as does his failure--refusal?--to become the martyr his followers wanted him to be. Charles P. "Pat" McKeague earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge, and his M.S. in Mathematics from Brigham Young University. Finally, I Understand Algebra!

Algebra has never come easy. I do not think it is meant to be so. After using the above textbook in at a community college Elementary Algebra class I now have a clearer understanding of algebraic functions. The textbook at first appears to have excessive practice problems, but these worked out for my benefit as I worked every single one of them. Remember, "practice makes perfect" and the more you practice at this level the better it will be for you in future algebra courses.
My compliments to the author for this exceptional textbook. It is clearly written for the non-algebra mind to understand.
I would highly recommend this textbook to anyone, especially to those of us who are algebraically challenged.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

WAR - A REAL TRUE IMPACT STORY

I first read this when first release and just purchased another copy. If you want to read about two real heros, James Stockdale and his wife Sybil Stockdale read this book. They write side by side in spirit, him in a Vietnames prison, the Hanoi Hilton, and she home with thier children. One of the best love, war and a story that you will remember.

Stockdale is an American Hero by measure of any and all definitions of that term.
Those of us who have not been tested this way should know the history of those who did.

This book should be required reading for US Presidents and all members of both houses of Congress.

The alternating chapters written by Jim and wife Sybil were a great way to get a complete picture of what took place.

Resilience - an underrated quality

My father recently left us after a short but hard fought battle against cancer. We lived by our version of the Stockdale paradox and it helped us enormously to keep things in perspective - without ever giving up hope!
Sybil Stockdale was a woman before her time, her frank and honest approach was so refreshing.
Dame Marie Stubbs now has some serious competition as my all time 'Woman of Inspiration'
After Dad's passing I felt I needed to 'know' these people, who without being aware helped us so much.

The grass isn't always greener, family-wise, Cecil the rabbit discovers. Frustrated that he and his two siblings can't agree on what to plant in their garden, he visits other animal families and realizes that things could be worse. Whenever the Mouse family wants to take a bath, for instance, they fill up the bathtub with so many toys that the mice themselves cannot fit; they can't agree on which ones to throw out and dump out the water instead. "We all fit. But we don't get very clean," grouses one of the mice to Cecil. Inspired by this and another negative example of a mole family that can't agree on when to wake up, Cecil returns to his home and figures out how his family can plant the garden and reap its bounty so "There is nothing to quarrel about and we don't have to waste another minute." Keller's (Horace; Brave Horace) ink-and-watercolor illustrations possess a sophisticated color sensibility even as they play up the implicit comedy in the situations. Her narrative underscores a universal message of how things can grind to a halt when the argument itself becomes more important than what's being fought over. Ages 4-up.

reSchool-Kindergarten--Cecil cannot wait until he is able to plant a garden with Jake and Posey. It's a perfect day to begin-until the three rabbit friends arrive at the plot. Then the arguments start. There is only room for five vegetables and they have six packets of seeds. Which one should go? Or, which two should be planted together? Instead of solving the problem, the three argue. Soon, it's too hot to work and they go home. Disappointed at the day's events, Cecil decides to visit his mice and mole pals, but finds each group embroiled in its own arguments with no one willing to compromise. After witnessing their disagreements, Cecil decides to take control of the gardening situation and comes up with the perfect solution. At harvest time the rabbit friends enjoy bountiful produce. As for the argumentative mice and moles-unable to compromise, they miss out on a savory garden stew. The full- and half-page watercolor pictures add life to the characters and story and clearly demonstrate why Cecil's solution works so well.

Cecil's clever solution, the straightforward prose, and the clean-lined, bright illustrations balance the story's heavy message and slightly meandering plot. How and why to get along ...

"Cecil's Garden" tells a story about three rabbits who get into a disagreement as they are planning how to plant their garden. I think it is a great story about how and why to get along. This is a useful idea for children, although I wouldn't mind at all if adults understood how to get along too!

When Cecil the rabbit finds himself engaging in arguments with his friends over how to plant the garden, he takes a stroll to let out some frustration. He visits the mice and the moles and finds there are in even longer-standing predicaments because no one will compromise. I felt there were some delightful "Alice in Wonderland" aspects at this stage in the story. For example, this bit of dialogue:

"All this quarreling seems to me a foolish waste of time, whatever time it is." Cecil said.
"It IS a waste of time," said Violet from under the covers, "but we're not in a hurry, so we have plenty."

Cecil finds a solution to his earlier dilemma and it wasn't even a compromise, but a way of thinking outside the box, and outside of the original problem. (You'll have to read the story to see what this was. It was a simple and elegant solution!)

I think this is a book that will appeal to both kids and grown-ups.

This storybook three rabbits set out to plant their garden. BUT they have to many different seeds for the space they have prepared. But no one is willing to not plant something so they just give up. But Cecil doesn't he goes out looking and finds friends who are mice and they have a predicament but they just can't work things out. In the meantime Cecil sees how wrong it was for him and the other two bunnies to argue and not be cooperative with one another. So he goes to the garden and moves the boundaries and plows a bit more making room for more seeds. The other two bunnies see what he's doing and they smile and come join him. Knowing that if they had worked together in the beginning it would have been much better but are glad Cecil figured out a way of working together

When Cecil, Jake and Posey went to plant their garden, they couldn't agree on which seeds to plant where. Because they couldn't agree, nothing got done. So Cecil went to visit a couple of his neighbors. The mice couldn't agree on their bath -- so they stayed dirty. The moles couldn't agree on when to get up -- so they were still in bed. Once Cecil sees the problems that disagreement can cause, he comes home ready for compromise. How do the three friends solve their garden problems? Illustrated by the author with cheerful watercolors. Ages 3-5.
