PreSchool-Grade 2-Palatini adds her own brand of offbeat humor and an unexpected ending to the traditional story of a child trying to convince her parents that she should have a pet. Elizabeth accepts the substitute cactus plant ("-it had quite a prickly sense of humor") and even names it, but she doesn't give up, surprising her parents in bed, in the bathroom ("Catch Them Off Guard"), and at the dinner table. While she enumerates the advantages of each animal, requesting everything from a horse to a rat, her parents counter with the negatives. Finally, the child finds her own solution. She adopts a bug, names him Doug, and provides him with a perfect habitat, good food, and companionship. He is the perfect pet, and Elizabeth loves him for his differences and individuality. Mother, on the other hand, is not happy with the idea. There is a happy ending, though, as Doug joins the family on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. The finely crafted illustrations in both delicate pastel shades and bright colors combine realistic pictures of animals and people with cartoon elements and an engaging little bug. For storytimes, combine this winner with Liesel Moak Skorpen's All the Lassies (Dial, 1970; o.p.) and Judith Viorst's poem "Mother Doesn't Want a Dog." Good for individual or group sharing.

Although she likes her pet cactus, Carolyn, she really wants something that moves, so she hatches plan after plan, determined to get what she wants. She tries "Element of Surprise," waking her parents up at night to request a horse. "Father yawned, 'A horse is too big.' / Mother sighed, 'Our yard is too small.'" Elizabeth receives similar responses when she tries "Catch Them Off Guard" to request a dog, and the "Full Stomach" approach to ask for a cat while at the dinner table. Nothing works, but just as Elizabeth runs out of ideas, she discovers Doug, a bug, right on her rug. Then, she has to convince her mother that Doug is perfect. "Think we should have said 'yes' to the dog?" whispers Father to Mother. Whatley's bright, double-page spreads are hilarious, depicting the best- and the worst-case scenarios of pet ownership. Since Columbus's discovery of the New World, Italians have played a vital part in shaping the Americas. La Storia ("the story") tells of these ethnic struggles and triumphs from 1492 to the present. This is not the personal voyage recently taken by Gay Talese in Unto the Sons ( LJ 2/1/92), although La Storia is more potent and valuable because of its inclusive breadth and scope. Mangione ( Mount Allegro , Columbia Univ. Pr., 1981) and Morreale ( A Few Virtuous Men , Tundra Bks., 1973. o.p.) report on a vast array of historically important topics: from the environment that spawned the mass migration overseas to the challenge of survival in a mostly hostile new homeland to the decline of religion and the tightknit traditions currently affecting the second and third generations. Past and present names (Amerigo Vespucci, Don DeLillo) and events (colonization, labor movements) are expounded upon so that the text has solid reference value. Outstanding...Meaningful in a very personal way...

What a great book! It chanced to catch my eye in recently and I've found it hard to put down.
This book eloquently ties together the *entire* experience of the Sicilian immigrant before, during and after their arrival. Although it is light on the parallel history of Sicily (Sammartino's Sicily is an EZ read) the focus on the American aspect makes it that much more unique.
Yet, there is excellent treatment of what the hollow term "Italian" meant to a peasant from Sicily - not much. Once they came to the US, they were effectively lumped together with everyone from what had only recently been joined (and by force at that) into a nation. The authors also provide context to the socio-economic misery effectively inflicted upon the southern regions to the direct and exclusive benefit of northern regions.
Also demystified is the pervasive myth of the Mafia, originally perpetuated by northern Italians as reasons why their welcome in the South quickly wore out - the Sicilians were regularly maligned as genetically inferior, lazy, unintelligent and all part of the Mafia. With the constant perpetuation of the "secret-society" angle - it's has all the chracteristics of a great meme. The roots are detailed including how and who profited from this wicked myth including: opportunistic northernern Italians, sensationalist meida, ignorant Americans and isolated criminals interested in making themselves bigger than life.
It's a bitter irony that so many southern Italians immigrants and their descendants became successful in America while their own homeland refused to give then any opportunity. Armed with the facts, Italians and Italian-Americans have a chance to separate the fact from fiction.
I'm a 3rd generation (Sicilian-Calabrese) American originally from Chicago, and the book rang true again and again. My experiences, the stories that I'd heard from family and friends, the make-up of the neighborhood I grew up in and how the media often portrays Italians.
I recommend this book for all Italians, Italian-Americans and especially those of southern Italian descent. I'd even recommend this book to people that have friends and family that are Italian or have any interest in the culture.
Bravissimo to the authors for writing a detailed, well researched treatise on what for many of us has been unwritten until now.

Hard to shake off...

As the grandson of Italian immigrants who didn't hear a lot about why my family came here from southern Italy I was looking for a book that would fill in some of the blanks. This book does that and more. It goes in depth about immigration, why Italians, especially southern Italians came to America, where they settled, their lives here, the good and bad times. It covers the history of Italy and tells why the unification of Italy caused such a mass migration of people to the US. Mangione goes deep into the oppression and hatred Italians faced, not only from other nationalities but from fellow Italians, Covering the period from the Revolution to the 1990s you read about common, everyday people trying to make a life here, and about the ones who became famous and are household names. A great book, one that makes me proud to be Italian-American.

it's like Fran's talking to you in person

Well, actually I don't read biographies, but I'm a very big fan of Fran since I saw her the first time as "The Nanny", and so I thought to read her book would be a little fun, but it was a lot more than "only a little fun"... Most of the time it was a night of laughing, but sometimes really hard to read what happened to Fran... But nevertheless: it is one of the best books I've ever read! And it containes really great pics of Fran, her family, Chester and so on... I loved the book so much that I bought the audio version, too. It makes a lot of fun to hear it while driving my car. I LOVE her voice! I really hope Fran will write a second book... So, for any fan of Fran: read this book! It will be seem to you like Fran's sitting right in front of you and tells the story of her life only for you! Fran, you're the BEST! Judith

What a fantastic book! It's written as though Fran Drescher is there talking to you and I've never read anything so funny in my life.
This woman has been through SO much and yet remains positive and happy. You laugh out loud one minute, then find yourself crying the next, only to start laughing again as you turn the page. It's almost like reading the diary of a friend, it's written so naturally.
You find out how Fran strives to reach stardom and all about her husband and family and it even touches on her terrible ordeal at the hands of a rapist in her own home.
You also get a great insight to her hit show, 'The Nanny,' with some amusing behind the scene's stories and pictures. In fact there's pictures galore throughout the whole book and by the end of it you feel like you're one of the family too.
Even if you're not a fan of Fran's, it's a great read about one woman's struggles and joys on her journey through life. I assure you, you'll find it hard to put down once you've started to read.
Just buy it and see.

Wow - what can I say? A great, gossipy, girl-next-door novel from the nasally voiced girl from Queens. Having read Cancer Schmancer and knowing what happens with her and Peter Marc Jacobson, parts of this novel were really sad. It is so obvious that she was very deeply in love with her husband and I wish they could have worked it out because they went through so much together.
Catty Ms. Drescher is not. She tells stories on herself and you have no doubt that she is as lovely in real life as she is in her books. How could she not be?

Yet he fails to develop his characters or setting, so that ultimately the reader doesn't care what happens to the protagonist or his friends. Armchair military strategist Bay (A Quick and Dirty Guide to War, not reviewed; coauthor of From Shield to Storm, 1992, etc.) reworks the Bond formula, introducing Wesley ``Wes'' Hawkins, a psychic soldier and employee of an ultrasecret extrasensory- perception government spy bureau called ``The Shop,'' managed by a female psychic puppeteer named Chatterly. Wes is ordered to haunt a dingy bar in Toulon, posing as a mercenary, so that he can infiltrate the Texas-based high-tech empire of American billionaire industrialist Coleman Oswald Mosley, a failed presidential candidate and impassioned model railroader. Wealthy enough to own a fleet of 747's and military hardware sufficient for a dozen Third World dictatorships, Mosley wants Wes to assassinate former American President and avid golfer Grover Renwick as well as current President Randall Duncan. To make sure Wes cooperates, Mosley's paramilitary thugs abduct his daughter. What follow are several scenes of artfully executed military mayhem in Bosnia, Somalia, northern Virginia, and Montana in which Wes distinguishes himself. While Mosley and his army communicate by beepers and e- mail, Wes chats with Chatterly by focusing his mental powers on crystals. Alas, Chatterly keeps her powerful thoughts to herself, saying little about the assassination plot or the importunate temptations of Sari, a leggy femme fatale posing first as a French chambermaid, then as a topless Caribbean nymph. Wes also gets flirtatious glances from the President's ``tigress'' wife, Carolyn Duncan, who, we presume, has other things on her mind than universal health care. After some Byronic brooding on the dehumanizing aspects of being manipulated by nasty people, Wes finds the fate of the world in his hands, and also finds himself, his daughter, and the President's son in a hail both of gunfire and psychic blasts. cute math book

Three young children plan to dress as firefighter for a parage. They start to dress in up in their firemen's coats and discover that the buttons are missing. The kids look around and find a bunch of buttons. Then they have to sort them so that each firefighter will have 4 buttons. Join them as they discover various ways of sorting.
I liked the suggested activities in this book that will provide parents with ideas to share with their kids about simple math concepts. An entertaining short picture-book that will delight preschool aged children.
We recommed this book because kids will love the pictures and the story line is too cute!

This book and its series are overrated.

*3 Little Firefighters* has just under 300 words, and it's part of a series purporting to deal with math skills. So you really have to wonder what kind of breathtakingly incompetent editor would allow a number error to make it into such a small book--on p. 11, the text says, "We've got to find four sets," when in fact, the book is only dealing with three sets. Now, obviously, a parent dealing with a child who can't read yet can correct this mistake himself, but I think the error is indicative of the lack of care and thought that has gone into these books. The rhymes lack creativity, the stories have no charm, and most of the books, including this one, try to teach skills that a child should pick up naturally through daily interaction with an adult. My advice: Skip this one; skip the whole series.

And whoever was supposed to edit this book at HarperTrophy should learn how to read.

If so, they'll miss the riveting story of a woman who survived in spite of abuse from both her parents, periodic bouts of depression, and self-doubt. Though Quivers does cover her relationship with Stern, most of the audiobook is devoted to her life outside of radio. There is discussion of the loss of her first love, a foster child she helped her parents to raise and subsequently wanted to adopt; her experience with a cult-like program; her years as a nurse; and how she managed to avoid a life of prostitution. Quivers gives a somewhat emotionless reading, but her detachment tends to draw the listener in. This is a wonderful recording that should find a home in all libraries.?Danna C.
