In the third volume of her memoirs (the first two are Bronx Primitive, LJ 5/1/82, and A Wider World, LJ 2/15/86), travel writer Simon recalls the joys and sorrows of her adult life. Her first husband, only child, and younger sister all died of cancer at early ages. Her second marriage was a sterile, joyless affair ending in divorce. Yet, what dominates this book is not sorrow, but the author's unquenchable zest for life, her curiosity, adventurous spirit, and trenchant observations on people and places. In Russia, there was the guide who suspected Simon was a spy; in Haiti, a voodoo ceremony; in Paris, wordless encounters with Sartre on the stairs. These are well-wrought portraits from a life well lived. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 4/1/90.

Simon's work is very moving.

Etchings in an Hourglass is the sequel to Bronx Primitive and A Wider World. This third volume of Kate Simon's extraordinary memoirs centers around the main people in her later life. Her first husband's illness and death were followed by two bittersweet love affairs and then by the painful death of her daughter -her only child-whose long illness the author describes with her usual blend of empathy and self-restraint. Her younger sister, whom she had helped to raise, also died at this time. Kate's relationship with her second husband grew bitter, and after an illness she entered a hospital, had an abortion, and went into analysis. In the years that followed Kate took up the travels for which she became famous in her books and articles. Here, however, she describes not scenery or architecture but people-especially men-who became friends or lovers and offered marriage or adventure. The book ends with a portrait of the author as she was at the end of her life-well centered, elderly, a bit tired, but still pushing, still entertained.
Kate Simon (1912-90) was born in Warsaw, Poland, and came to the United States with her family at the age of four. Her first memoir, Bronx Primitive, recalls her childhood in New York City. A Wider World continues the story of her life through her adolescence. Ms. Simon was well known for her travel guides Italy: The Places in Between, Mexico: Places and Pleasures, and New York: Places and Pleasures. Her other books include A Renaissance Tapestrv: The Gonzaga of Mantua. She lived in New York City.

Bold, complex, decadent, dizzying, rich, colorful: Wearstler’s residential and hotel designs are not for the faint of heart. The founder of the Los Angeles "architectural interior design" firm KWID worked as a Hollywood set designer before she decided to focus on real-life living spaces, and her vibrant, multi-layered interiors still look like backdrops for drama. In this design cum promotional book, Wearstler explains her aesthetic philosophy and lays out suggestions for those readers who would like to emulate her "unusual and kaleidoscopic" style, which graces such famous California hotels as the Viceroy, Estella and Maison 140. Certainly, the book’s large, full-bleed color photographs do justice to the variety of her creations. One two-page spread showcases a bathroom tiled in maroon, pink and white stripes and lit with a dainty glass and gold chandelier. Another shows a cool, all-white bedroom decorated with a silver bamboo chair and a black wood bedframe. Wearstler encourages readers to stop thinking about rooms in terms of furniture and accessories and to start imagining them as combinations of color, texture, shape and form. This, she writes, is the secret to creating a "graphic style … that lends itself to crispness and richness that make you say ‘Wow.’" While there’s no firm, step-by-step advice in the volume—a chapter on "Process" does little more than describe her office’s client meetings—the photographs and the author’s attitude will surely inspire amateurs who are looking for a design style that goes beyond Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and Ikea.

Kelly Wearstler is the author of Modern Glamour and the founder of the Los Angeles architectural interior design firm kwid (Kelly Wearstler Interior Design). Her designs for the trendsetting Viceroy resorts from California to the Caribbean; such taste-making hotels as Maison 140 and Avalon; unique office, retail, and leisure spaces, including BG restaurant and lounge in Manhattan's Bergdorf Goodman; and upscale residences such as the Trousdale Estate have been profiled in House and Garden, House Beautiful, Interior Design, Elle Décor, Vogue, and W. Wearstler is also designer of her own kwid line of furnishings and accessories. She lives in Beverly Hills with her husband, hotelier Brad Korzen, and their sons.

Kelly, deliver us from beige!

If you bought all the "Trading Spaces" books, or worship at the altar of Christopher Lowell and Nate Berkus, then this is probably NOT the book for you. This is not a helpful hints, step-by-step book, or a book of designer secrets. It's the edgy boutique hotel of decorating books, not the Hilton.

It's a book of inspiration. Wearstler's interiors show the rewards of having patience and searching for the absolute perfect color, perfect item, perfect chair. She shows how to twist tradition with a blend of unusual pieces, unexpected finishes, and wild patterns and colors.

Every time I pick this up I find a quirky detail in one of the rooms. Whether it's a ceramic dog positioned to be peeking over the back of a sofa, or a large black tassel hanging from a brass door handle, or a lacquered wall. All stuff I'd usually cringe at, but here done with the author's wit, and it works.

You may not wish to have any of that in your home, but I bet you'll start finding the courage to display more than just a Crate and Barrel vase on the coffee table.

Are Kelly and Jonathan The Same Person?

Is Kelly Wearstler Jonathan Adler in drag? Or vice versa? Both are wildly talented people, who just happen to use the same things in their work, same colors, etc. Jonathan is an artist, who adoringly references and copycats retro pottery, and makes it unqiuely his own. Kelly is a cool chick, good dresser, has tons of style and can make a pretty room out of old glam junk and ideas. I love them both, and their books are worth having. I wish Kelly had more personal rooms. Too many hotel rooms which are very stagey. In the book she says she didn't like doing set design, yet that's what she does - designs sets for cool people like her to inhabit. Hollywood Regency is the word bandied about to describe both Jonathan & Kelly, he sometimes getting the East coast moniker of Palm Beach Style too (and she the West coast of Palm Springs). I say if you shop on eBay you will see all this great junk (just search Hollywood Regency) that I call eBay Regency. Both books give you a few ideas of how to put it together. Jonathan is more playful, Kelly more serious, but both make wonderful, zany, colorful, retro inspired modern human rooms. I think they bring back the words INTERIOR DECORATOR, so refreshing after everyone and his mother is a DESIGNER (used to be everyone's mother was a station wagon driving decorator with a business on the side). I wonder if these two have ever met, and if so do they like one another, or are they really the same person?

What a FUN book!

As a designer myself, this book was a great read. No, it is not an instructional book on how to decorate, but more of a personal portfolio of this designer's very stylish work. Ms. Wearstler is a very talented designer in that she has developed a very strong style that is recognizable among today's design work. As for the pictures of Ms. Wearstler herself, I very much enjoyed them, because her style of clothing absolutely reflected the glamour of the interiors she designs. I would say not to get this book if you know nothing about design, but read this book if you appreciate visual design that is unique and very bold. Congratulations Kelly Wearstler on showing us what personal style is all about!

About the Author

Brent Hartinger has been a full-time author for many years, writing novels, plays, and screenplays. He lives in Washington State. Among his books are Geography Club and its sequel, The Order of the Poison Oak, as well as The Last Chance Texaco and Split Screen. Like Dave and his friends, as a teenager he resisted getting a job for as long as possible but finally was forced by his parents to go to work as a lifeguard at age sixteen. He still smells like coconut sunblock.

Very disappointed, RUINED first book experience

Significant quality fall from the first book. While the first book's target audience was "young adults" this feels like it was written for babies. I can't believe that one of my most favorite stories (Geography Club) could have a sequel that would be no different than those weird, creepy and clichéd fan-fictions on the internet.

I am extremely disappointed. Please don't read the sequels if you don't want the story of the original book RUINED.

Starts Slow, But Stick with It

I initially felt disappointed with this book, because its first chapter starts off very slowly, almost leading me to put it down. Thankfully, I stuck with it, and was pleasantly surprised to see that POISON OAK actually surpasses the author's first book, GEOGRAPHY CLUB, to which this is a sequel.

One might think that the story of three teenage friends at a summer camp might not have a lot of dramatic potential... but think again. Sure, this story's got all the expected teenage angst, but add to that romance, betrayal, lust, friendship, and a wealth of other emotions -- quite a rollercoaster ride. Some unexpected twists and turns lead to several surprising dramatic climaxes, along with valuable lessons in life for both the reader and the characters.

Like the author's last novel, POISON OAK draws its characters vividly, and their many flaws make them both interesting and very real. Hartinger makes some good points, comparing children with scars on the outside to those with scars on the inside, and does it in a way that's never cloying or hokey. And the romantic yearning felt by the three central characters are universal; some might characterize the book as a being for "gay teens," but I think these emotions can be empathized by anyone with heart.

This being a YA novel, don't expect for the sex scenes to be explicit. I'd call this "PG-13" sex, leaving much to the imagination, but still with enough details to make the point. The emotional content is much more intense; there's several scenes that I suspect many readers will find very moving, and at least a couple that are almost heart-breaking. And this ain't no "after-school special"; the story and characters ring very true to me, without the "happily ever after" gloss of similar stories and TV shows.

Five-star reviews get handed out much too often here on Amazon, but I think POISON OAK clearly deserves one.

Great Follow up to The Geography Club

The Order of the Poinson Oak is the follow up book to Brent Hartinger's Geography Club (GC). And for a follow up book it's great. The characters are true to who they were in GC.

Russel, Min, & Gunnar are back, but this time they are going to Summer Camp. If you have ever been to summer camp, then you may read things happening in this book that you may have actually experienced. Because of this, I found the story believable, and well done. Hartinger also does a great job of that eternal question that all LGBTQ teens, and even adults have to deal with, "Should I come out to these people or not?"

The story is written from the perspecite of Russel, and you get to read the thoughts that are going through hims mind. The narrative is done in the form of a recolection, or retelling of a story, so the narrator has a little more insight than the characters, which takes nothing away from the story, but does give you a sense of what's to some.

The plot was pretty predictable, and if you have read a moderate amount of books, the hints at the ending that Hartinger gives are glaringly obvious. But the journey to the end was very enjoyable. Sometimes it's not the ending that counts, but the journey we take to get there. And this book is just like that. You already know what's going to happen, but you really want to see how the characters get there.

All in all this was a great book, and I would highly reccomend it.

Done in pen and ink and felt-tipped markers, the illustrations radiate color and merriment. The inclusion of an African-American uncle and cousin as well as a blended family that creates his, her, and our children should allow many readers to identify with this family. Like Hutchins' The Doorbell Rang (1986) and Anne Shelby's Potluck (1991), this bright, exuberant picture book celebrates diversity and connection in a cumulative chanting story about a party. This time the guests are all family and the occasion is a small girl's birthday. It begins with the child and her mother: "I'm my mother's daughter." Then the birthday girl's sister arrives: "I'm my sister's sister." Then comes her half-brother. She's also her stepfather's stepdaughter, her stepbrother's stepsister, and she's a cousin, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter. The chant is cumulative: each new relationship doesn't cancel out the others, but adds to them. The clear, lovely, detailed pictures in pen-and-ink and felt-tip markers show the close multiethnic family. Each right-hand page focuses on one new arrival, while on the left-hand page the relatives already there prepare for the party. The relationships aren't simple (What's the difference between a stepsister and a half-sister?), and kids will want to talk about them. About the Author
"I tend to see the funny side of things," says Pat Hutchins. Whether it's the light, subtle humor of her first picture book, Rosie's Walk, or the slapstick comedy of Rats!, her special gift of humor is reflected in both words and pictures.

Pat Hutchins was born in Yorkshire, England, one of seven children, and grew up in the countryside of Yorkshire, which she still loves. At a very early age she knew that she wanted to be an artist.

She was encouraged by an elderly couple, who would give her a chocolate bar for each picture she drew. A local art school gave her a scholarship and she studied there for three years, continuing her training at Leeds College of Art, where she specialized in illustration. Her career in the children's book field began with the highly acclaimed Rosie's Walk, a 1968 ALA Notable Book. Since then she has written five novels and created more than twenty picture books. She was awarded England's prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 1974 for The Wind Blew.

She says she tries "to write about what children say and do," and she believes in very simple picture books for the youngest child. But her simple texts and wonderfully vivid pictures manage to convey the most complex emotions. She also has the rare ability to use such basic concepts as time, growth, and change to create imaginative, satisfying books for children. Her ideas come from a variety of sources: listening to her children and their friends, or sometimes from real situations. The idea for The Very Worst Monster came to her when her niece told her she wanted to give her baby brother away. Ms. Hutchins tempered the theme of sibling rivalry by using soft watercolors to make the monster family more lovable. The result is a delightfully wicked monster family that children will wish lived next door.

Pat Hutchins lives in London with her husband, Laurence, also an artist. They have two sons, Morgan and Sam.

The world has grown increasingly curious about the benefits of soy in recent years. Not only is it a dietary staple of the people of Okinawa, who live longer than anyone else, it also seems to help prevent heart disease and breast and prostate cancer.

So author Barry Sears has now modified his popular Zone diet to include soy and made the whole thing just as easy to follow as before. Fill a third of your dinner plate with a dish high in soy protein and the other two-thirds with fruits and vegetables, and you've got the Zone dialed in.

Not surprisingly, Sears is just as down on starchy foods--potatoes, pasta, rice, breads, and cereals--in The Soy Zone as he has been in his past books. He says they trigger too large an insulin surge, which leaves people feeling sluggish a couple of hours after the meal, and sends them chasing after another burst of quick energy in the form of other insulin-generating carbohydrates. That, he says, makes people fat. He also comes down on traditional vegetarian diets for that same reason: "The insidious long-term consequence of a grain-based vegetarian diet is the constant elevation of insulin levels," he writes.

The payoffs of taking this detour into the soy zone are immediate, Sears notes. He promises that people following his diet will think better, feel more energized, look better (he predicts a five-pound weight loss after two weeks on the Zone diet, including about two to three pounds of retained water), and experience fewer sugar cravings. Even better, the addition of 50 daily grams of soy to the diet should reduce total cholesterol levels by about 9 percent, shrinking the risk of heart disease by 20 percent. Do you want to live a longer and healthier life? I know I do.Unfortunately, I am also genetically programmed for an early heartattack. For the past two generations most of the males in my family have died of heart attacks by their mid-fifties. I have inherited these same poor genes.

I can't change my genes, but perhaps I can change my genetic destiny by altering the expression of certain genes through the foods I eat. This may sound like scientific fantasy, but it turns out that food is the most potent medicine of all. This is because food can indirectly turn certain genes on and off by altering levels of hormones. I have spent nearly 20 years researching how the foods we eat affect our hormones and how these hormones alter our genetic fate. I hope the scientific odyssey I have embarked upon to prolong the length and quality of my own life can help you do the same.

The basis of the Zone Diet comes from my background in the development of intravenous delivery systems for cancer drugs. I learned that if too little of the drug is administered, the patient dies of cancer. If the patient gets too much, he will die from the drug's toxicity. The goal of the cancer treatment is to maintain that drug within a therapeutic zone: not too high, not too low. Baked Golden Tofu Dumplings with Saucy Dip

Servings: 1 Dinner Entree

Ingredients

Dumplings
8 ounces extra-firm tofu
4 teaspoons natural peanut butter
1 1/2 tablespoons tamari sauce
3 scallions, chopped
1 small green or red pepper, chopped
2 medium stalks celery, chopped
8 medium mushrooms, diced
3 water chestnuts, diced
1 medium sprig parsley, minced

Sauce
3/4 cup apple juice
2 teaspoons maple syrup or brown sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons tamari sauce
1 to 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon ginger, grated
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 to 2 teaspoons arrowroot powder dissolved in 1 to 2 teaspoons water
4 medium leaves kale, washed and de-stemmed

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 F.

2. Mash tofu with fork or potato masher until broken up. Add peanut butter, tamari sauce, scallions, pepper, celery, mushrooms, water chestnuts, and parsley. Mix well.

3. Form the tofu mixture into golf ball-sized dumplings, and place on lightly oiled cookie sheet. Rinse hands in cold water periodically to keep dumplings from clinging.

4. Bake in oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

5. Meanwhile, combine apple juice, maple syrup, tamari sauce, vinegar, ginger, and garlic in small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add arrowroot water and stir 1 minute more. Remove from heat.

6. Steam kale for 5 to 7 minutes.

7. Serve dumplings on a bed of steamed kale with a small dish of sauce on the side.

Can Soy Really Improve Your Health ?

Author Barry Sears makes it known that he believes that soy can improve your health and reduce your weight, so much so that he modified his famous and very popular "Zone Diet" to include a significant amount of SOY. "The Soy Zone" is a brand new book and is already getting a lot of press and attention. I am interested in getting as much information about the value of soy, not so much from a weight loss standpoint, but for overall improvement in health and for disease prevention. The author makes some good points regarding soy's value that appear to be valid. Much of the current literature (professional and lay) point out soy's benefits for better health. Mr. Sears provides many interesting recipes (in color) from top chefs around the world that look tempting, and are worth trying. He promises readers that those who follow his diet will think better, feel more energized, look better, experience fewer sugar cravings and lose weight after a few short weeks on his diet. Only time will tell how valid this is. This book's worth reading, at least to learn the values of soy in your diet.

Good Adaptation of the Zone Diet for Vegetarians

I feel that Barry Sears has a piece of the dietary puzzle when it comes what kind of optimal diet best serves us. He has questioned the validity of high carb diets in terms the insulin mechanism and hormone production in general. I am vegan and do well with high amounts of protein. This book gave me some insight into why I do well keeping high amounts of protein in my diet. Having said all this, I do have a few reservations about the Zone approach. I do find that a number of the more negative reviews seem to reflect some of these reservations. I still give a positive review for this book, but four stars rather than five stars. I do not expect any one diet book to have all the answers or to be able to propose a diet that could meet the needs of everyone. I think the book does enumerate the positive benefits of soy products well. It seems, though, that not everyone does well with many of these soy products. Some research is showing up a dark side of soy products, though I feel the dark side may be overstated some and only apply to certain soy products that are very overprocessed. It seems that tofu and tempeh, for instance, are still good sources of soy protein. I notice that some of the soy products mentioned are also high in wheat gluten (the soy hot dogs) that some people have an adverse reaction to high gluten products that may make some of the recipes not work for them and even produce the brain fog and bad feeling that was mentioned in one of the reviews. While the author admits he is not vegetarian, he seems to eat less animal flesh than the usual American diet. However, because he is not vegetarian, he personally cycles around his protein sources, while present to Vegans a diet that only gets protein from one source, which I do not feel is wise. Vegans may need to be cautious about getting all their protein from one source all the time. Some diet books recommend that we periodically cycle our protein sources to prevent getting food allergies and this book does not go into this possibility. He also does not go into the distinction between animal protein and plant protein. The latter is more bioavailable than animal protein and therefore you do not need as much, and therefore you do not have to try to fulfill the Zone ratios as strictly if you are vegan. While I feel that Barry Sears gets validates the logic of high protein diets, I do not think he has altered the ratios to fit the strengths of a vegan diet in terms of the greater protein bioavailability of plant sources. It is more like he is extropolating from animal flesh diet research. I also feel he does not make enough distinction between processed foods, fermented foods, and more natural foods. The latter two categories have more bioavailable nutrients than processed foods and the carbs found in those sources have less insulin impact than flour based and sugar processed foods. Having said this, I like his theories and suggestions, and feel that his insights can be integrated into a larger approach that includes the awareness of other diet factors.

Kudos to the Steigs (A Handful of Beans), who employ colloquial prose, agile rhymes and art brut imagery to retell Greco-Roman myths. But beware: Like Ovid's The Metamorphoses, this zesty volume is a Pandora's box of hubris, lust and homicide. It opens with Prometheus, whose brother receives curvy, nude Pandora and her "baggage" from Mount Olympus. "Think twice, brother," Prometheus says. "A gift from Zeus is not likely to be a bargain." In a scrawled ink drawing, jack-in-the-box dragons pop out of a golden trunk. Elsewhere, lewd Zeus makes trouble by seducing Europa (as a bull) and doing a swan-dive on Leda (fully clothed but smiling blissfully): "He could never resist a mortal woman, especially one so agreeably sprawled on a bed of myrtle under the Spartan sky." Besides amorous gods, ravished virgins and incestuous parents, the collection recounts the weaving duel between mortal maiden Arachne and wrathful goddess Minerva, and the tragic love of Orpheus and Eurydice. Jeanne Steig admirably distills the famous stories, which she spices with euphemism and mordantly witty verse; only the knotty sagas of Theseus and Perseus contain a surfeit of complications. William Steig provides an antidote to mundane neoclassical art, sketching voluptuous nymphs and bloodthirsty boars in an earthy hand. An iconic drawing of the key element in each story appears as a chapter opener (e.g., a golden goblet for Midas). These racy myths will raise eyebrows (e.g., Daedalus fashions a cow suit for bull-besotted Pasipha‰), along with a curiosity for the originals. All ages.

Grade 9 Up-Although in many ways this volume is as enthralling as the Steigs' A Handful of Beans (HarperCollins, 1998), in these unexpurgated myths, as in their pagan sources, lurk suicides and other distressing deaths, lust, rape, incest, and human-animal couplings of various sorts. That said, sophisticated readers will be charmed by the lively retellings, blending vernacular ("wiggly, giggly nymph") and elevated diction ("amorous revelry") in focused and fast-moving narratives. Although 16 myths are featured, many more are told in passing. Clever and elliptical brief verses are scattered throughout the text, reminding readers of the connection between myths and songs. William Steig's fierce, funny, faux-naive illustrations add a piquant touch: the irate Demeter, dead bunny and gull at her feet, with a duck bombing to Earth beside her, is particularly delicious. Others are more romantic or celebratory, but all are colorful and carefully composed. For older readers, this book marries two immortals: Steigian art and classical myth.

A fresh, lively, but flawed treatment of Greek mythology

The Steigs have done a tremendous job in this book of retelling 16 of the most popular Greek myths. Most importantly, they have done so without altering the details of the myths or losing their original spirit -- which tends to happen all too often with contemporary retellings of myths.
I do, however, have a few problems with the book. One is that it isn't clear to me who the intended audience should be -- it is not nearly comprehensive enough to be of use to the serious student of mythology, but it is also NOT written for kids. (A note to teachers -- this is a seriously "PG-13" book, and emphatically NOT for use in a classroom!)
My other problem is with some of the choices of myths: For example, how in the world could a collection of "sixteen favorite myths" leave out the twelve labors of Hercules? And some of the others, like the story of Europa, are just not all that interesting to begin with.
In short, the myths presented are done well. However, the book would have been better had the author decided to compile a more complete collection of stories, or had she decided to retell the ones she chose in a less "salacious" manner.

A lovely retelling of classical mythology, but should hardly be included among "children's books." To begin with, as another reviewer has noted, the illustrations are a bit too "irreverant." Descriptions of how Daedalus fashions a wooden cow for his queen to enjoy a sexual encounter with a bull seems far too adult a subject for an intended audience of 9-12 year-old readers. I had bought this book intending to read it with my six-year-old son, but it will be a few more years (quite a few) before he will see it. I am just not ready to explain to him what "ravish" means. I am very familiar with classical Greek mythology and should have known better than to have bought a book of it for a child. However, its being included in Amazon's children's section convinced me that it would be "safe." This book would be better classified as "teen" or some such. Not for children.

Funny and Fresh Myth Retellings for Adults

A Gift from Zeus succinctly tells sixteen classical myths in humorous prose interspersed with witty verse. Those myths are the stories of Prometheus, Demeter and Persephone, Midas, Daphne and Apollo, Leda, Pygmalion, Europa, Venus and Adonis, Daedalus and Icarus, Arachne, Hero and Leander, Perseus, Echo and Narcissus, Bellerophon, Theseus, and Orpheus and Eurydice. The language ("On the ravaged earth he ravaged the girl") and drawings are NOT for young children. This book is for teens and adults and is best enjoyed by someone who knows the myths already. If you're looking for a serious and comprehensive overview of Classical Mythology, try Edith Hamilton's Mythology. If you want a funny, irreverent look at myths, this book is for you.
