Before Mao: The Untold Story of Li Lisan and the Creation of Communist China, by Patrick Lescot

The first biography of Li Lisan, the first head of China's Communist Party, whose fiery independence led to forced exile under Stalin and eventual execution at the hands of Mao. Combining an exceptional love story with a gripping tale of incarceration in Stalin's gulag and later in Mao's concentration camps, Patrick Lescot's "Before Mao" is a deeply moving, beautifully told saga of Li Lisan, Mao's predecessor at the head of the Communist Party, a key member of the Russian and Chinese revolutions. Told in an engaging, highly dramatic style that reads more like a novel than a standard history, Lescot skilfully unfolds this page-turning biography. Li, who led the Chinese Communist Party in the 1920s, was a rare survivor among the Chinese members of the Internationale. Moving from China to France to the Soviet Union and finally back to China, "Before Mao" is an extraordinary chronicle of the indomitable human spirit 'allowing us to share in some true moments of emotion, where love wins over totalitarianism's destruction of individuality' (Le Monde).

From Publishers Weekly
A longtime journalist in Asia and editor-in-chief of the news service Agence France-Presse, Lescot has found a moving love story amid one of the most violent periods of human history. Li Lisan (18991967) was co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP); caught in the tumult of China's civil war, dehumanized under the oppression of Stalin's Moscow, and despite years in prison in both the Soviet gulag and in China, Lisan somehow kept the devoted love of Elisabeth Kishkin, a Komsomol member he met as a young Communist in Russia. Centered on these unlucky lovers, Lescot's account neatly introduces readers to France's early Communists, whom Li met while studying there in the early 1920s; to Stalin's temper and its mortal consequences for those around him; and to the CCP's long struggle to turn Communist ideology into state policy. Lescot's vivid and engrossing account explains how Li, an unswerving patriot and Communist rumored in the popular presses to have been martyred at least three times fighting Communist enemies, eventually died during the Cultural Revolution at the hand of his own comrades. Though the book is in parts marked by distractingly hackneyed language (possibly a fault of the translation), nothing lessens the power of Li and Elisabeth's romance. Obstacles made insurmountable by the time of the Sino-Soviet split are made more stirring by the couple's small victories and brief reunions. By book's end, Lescot has turned a bleak history of mankind's cruelty into a passionate story of love's endurance.

Not so great
By WhoAmI
I thank the author, a Frenchman for taking pains to assemble a story about the life of an early Chinese communist leader largely forgotten by us Chinese. But the novelization and the author's penchant for melodramatics made it such a drag that I had to force myself again and again to pick it up and finish it. At times it seems that the author can't tell rumors from facts. For example, where the hell did he get the idea that Mao occasionally slept with young men? Care to disclose the source?

Chinese history in the last couple centuries has been dramatic enough that neither literary flourish is needed nor will it help in telling its variegated stories.

A Must read
By Seth J. Frantzman
Renewed interest in Pre-communist china ahs brought this wonderful book to us along with other reads on Chang-Kai Shek among others. This is a needed contribution to the scholarship. Li Lisan was co-founder of the Communist party and went on to study in France and then settle in Russia. Although this book focuses on his love affair with Elizabeth Kushkin, it also tells a weaving fascinating story of the links between international communism and cracks within it. Excellent portraits are given of the mercurial Stalin, who jailed Lisan along with many international communists who didn't toe the party line. In the end Lisan returned to China, saw the civil war to communist victory and then was finally killed in 1967 in the cultural revolution, just prior to the large scale military skirmishes on the China-Russia border that showed the final split between Moscow and Beijing.
A wonderful book. A must read for any Chinese or communist enthusiast. This book brings back to life the heady days of warlords, Sun Yet Sun and the birth of communism in China during the chaos of the early 20th century.

Well researched biography about a little known early Communist leader ...
By Great Pyr
Well researched biography about a little known early Communist leader in China. Never held much power in Red China and missed most of the major portion of the Red Revolution including the Long March, WWII against the Japanese. Was in Russia most of this time including some in jail. Never held much power in China and was another victim of Mao's Cultural Revolution. Interesting as a life during the Communist era of Russia & China that were often victims as non communists in those countries but not an influential player other then in his hopes.

The Miraculous Fever-Tree: Malaria and the Quest for a Cure That Changed the World, by Fiammetta Rocco

"Cinchona revolutionized the art of medicine as profoundly as gunpowder had the art of war."

-- Bernardino Ramazzini, Physician to the Duke of Modena, Opera omnia, medica, et physica, 1716

In the summer of 1623, ten cardinals and hundreds of their attendants died in Rome while electing a new pope. The Roman marsh fever that felled them was the scourge of the Mediterranean, northern Europe and even America.

Malaria, now known as a disease of the tropics, badly weakened the Roman Empire. It killed thousands of British troops fighting Napoleon in 1809 and many soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. It turned back travelers exploring West Africa in the nineteenth century and brought the building of the Panama Canal to a standstill. Even today, malaria kills someone every thirty seconds. For more than one thousand years, there was no cure for it.

Pope Urban VIII, elected during the malarial summer of 1623, was determined that a cure should be found. He encouraged Jesuit priests establishing new missions in Asia and in South America to learn everything they could from the peoples they encountered. In Peru a young apothecarist named Agostino Salumbrino established an extensive network of pharmacies that kept the Jesuit missions in South America and Europe supplied with medicines. In 1631 Salumbrino dispatched a new miracle to Rome.

The cure was quinine, an alkaloid made of the bitter red bark of the cinchona tree. Europe's Protestants, among them Oliver Cromwell, who suffered badly from malaria, feared that the new cure was nothing but a Popish poison. More than any previous medicine, though, quinine forced physicians to change their ideas about illness. Before long, it would change the face of Western medicine.

Yet how was it that priests in the early seventeenth century–who did not know what malaria was or how it was transmitted–discovered that the bark of a tree that grew in the foothills of the Andes could cure a disease that occurred only on the other side of the ocean?

Using fresh research from the Vatican and the Indian archives in Seville, as well as documents she discovered in Peru, award-winning author Fiammetta Rocco chronicles the ravages of the disease; the quest of the three Englishmen who smuggled cinchona seeds out of South America; the way in which quinine opened the door to Western imperial adventure in Asia, Africa and beyond; and how, even today, quinine grown in the eastern Congo still saves the lives of so many suffering from malaria.

From Publishers Weekly
Before the discovery of malaria's causes and treatments, the mosquito-borne illness was a killer that held sway over tropical countries and extended deadly tendrils into more northern climes. Born in Kenya, Rocco (literary editor at The Economist) was exposed to the disease at an early age. Four of the girls from her primary school class died of cerebral malaria before they turned 40, and she herself contracted the illness in her teens, a fact which may have spurred her desire to write this engaging history of malaria's most popular cure: quinine. Using anecdotes from her far-ranging research as a narrative hook, Rocco traces the history of quinine from its discovery in the 17th century by Jesuit missionaries in Peru to its use by expanding European colonial powers and its role in the development of modern anti-malaria pills. The priests learned of the bark of the cinchona tree, which was used by Andean natives to cure shivering, at a time when malaria, then known as Roman ague or marsh fever, was devastating southern Europe. The Jesuits eagerly began the distribution of the curative bark. It also helped European explorers and missionaries survive the disease as they entered new territories. Rocco's many descriptions of her travels and of her personal experiences with malaria keep her story interesting and immediate, and she stirs in enough science to explain the how malaria and its cure actually work, making this a good choice for fans of memoir and science history. 16-page b&w photo insert.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Like Mark Kurlansky's superb Cod (1997) and Salt (2001), Rocco's book is the history of a commodity--quinine--and commerce is the mainspring of its development. Europeans had suffered from malaria immemorially but found reliable relief only as a result of colonizing South America, where Spanish Jesuits heard of and were led to the cinchona tree; they prepared its bark as directed by the indigenes, took it to Rome, and persuaded at least some of the medical establishment of the time that the "Jesuit powder" was effective. Spain then cornered the quinine trade, and rival European powers strove by means mostly foul--smuggling cinchona seeds and seedlings--to subvert it, ultimately successfully. The science of malaria and quinine were worked out in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the latest major part of quinine's story is about maintaining supplies under trying conditions in the places that now need it most: the often strife-torn tropical nations. Rocco unfolds this saga in terms of major figures and events, from malaria-threatened seventeenth-century papal elections to a contemporary quinine producer's decision to remain in the Congo and help its people. Her clear prose and personal investment--having grown up in Africa, she knows malaria and quinine all too personally--ensure that every episode of her narrative enthralls. Ray Olson

The Unwon Battle of Cinchona Against Malaria
By Rob Hardy
The most devastating disease to humans has undoubtedly been malaria. Fiammetta Rocco is qualified to write about the disease. She has had it herself, and her father had it many times. Her grandparents kept a farm in Africa, and while it can be expected that there were plenty of diseases to bother or kill, malaria was the most prevalent. The story of the battle against malaria has been told many times, but since it combines science, the conquest of nations, and religion, it will always prove inexhaustible. In _The Miraculous Fever-Tree: Malaria and the Quest for a Cure that Changed the World_ (HarperCollins), Rocco has focused on the discovery, utilization, and culture of quinine, the drug that for centuries has brought some hope against the disease. That it has had to work for centuries, of course, means that the battle is far from won.
Perhaps the most malarious city in the world was Rome. It was said that the many marshes around the city provided "bad air" (how the disease gets its name), but of course they actually provided breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that spread it. When there was a convocation of cardinals, for the eventual election of Pope Urban VIII in 1623, there was a clash of politics, philosophies, and personalities, but the most worrisome aspect of the meeting was that one cardinal after another sickened and died. At just about that time cinchona bark started coming in. That it was a miracle cure is clear, and part of the wonder was that a constant scourge of Europe had a cure growing in dense forests in the mountains halfway around the world. Jesuit priests in missions in the Andes saw that natives used it to stop the shivers when exposed to dampness and cold, and when it was tried on malaria, not only did it work to ease the shivering, it took away the other symptoms of the disease. It became know as "Jesuit Powder," and Protestants protested against its use; it also seemed to contradict the humoral theory by which medicine was done at the time. Its efficacy meant that it would conquer such prejudices, but Rocco shows how in one world war after another, the medicine was not available to troops who needed it.
Malaria is still a killer, one person succumbing about every fifteen seconds. The pharmaceutical industry is generally uninterested in researching and producing medicines for tropical diseases, and the artificial substitutes for quinine have resulted in resistant strains. But surprisingly, the Jesuit Powder has barely sparked any resistance, and it still works. This detailed and fascinating book ends with the optimistic outlook for the company Pharmakina, based in the Congo, which is simply growing cinchona trees, harvesting the quinine, and selling it at affordable prices. Such an operation won't do for the big drug companies, but sensible profits from a reliable product represent good business. This is a reminder that for all the colorful and dramatic history of malaria and our efforts to treat it, the past is not as important as the future.

Bark, bugs and battles
By Stephen A. Haines
This engaging account sketches the investigation and quest for a cure for the "mal 'aria" of Rome. "Mal 'aria" was once thought to emanate from the "bad air" of swamps and marshes. Rocco, herself a victim of this dread illness, narrates its impact from ancient times into the modern world. When the death of a pope brought 55 cardinals to Rome to replace Gregory XV, 10 of them had contracted malaria within two weeks. Those who survived returning to Sees in European nations spread further a malady already prevalent in many nations as distant as the British Isles and Scandinavia. Even as the papal successor, who was also prostrated with chills and fever, struggled to survive the infection, some of his minions were advocating a likely cure against great skepticism.
Jesuit missionaries in the New World discovered Native Americans using a powdered tree bark to treat fevers and "agues". Sending the powder back to Catholic Europe introduced the first therapy for malaria, probably just as these same interlopers were infesting the Western Hemisphere with the parasite. Cinchona powder, diluted in wine to cover its bitterness, verged on the miraculous. As Rocco describes its effect, she also recounts the resistance to the "Jesuit powder" in Protestant Europe, particularly Britain. Lack of enthusiasm, plus military ineptness, led to a malarial onslaught in 1808, when an English attempt to invade Napoleon's empire ended in disaster.
Empire, war and malaria remained in close company throughout the 19th Century. British incursions into west Africa were stalled by the infection. At one point the medical records indicated more cases of malaria than there were settlers - due to repeat hospital patients. Even against this severity, progress was being made. It's said "there's always one" and Rocco shows how one dedicated man made an immense difference. On a voyage up the Niger, Baikie imposed a strict daily regimen of quinine dosage. One of his crew was murdered and one drowned - but none were lost to malaria.
Returning to the Western Hemisphere, Rocco describes the inept handling of fevers by the in the American Civil War. Vicksburg, she asserts, failed to be taken due to the Union's lack of quinine for its troops investing the city. Even greater disaster awaited the French in their attempt to link the Atlantic and Pacific with a Panama Canal. Instead of treating the workers, the French merely hid the casualty list and hired replacements. Even as late as World War II, battlegrounds in the Pacific highlighted the need for plentiful supplies of quinine. By that time, however, some synthetics had been developed. Malaria, however, is neither easily diagnosed nor treated. Rocco notes that there are several versions of the illness, and many varieties of cinchona. Matching them takes skill.
At the end of the 19th Century, malaria had been identified as a parasite, not the effusion of swampy fumes. Rocco describes the labours of British Army doctor Ronald Ross, who laboured under appalling conditions in India. He traced the course of the parasite, in part by dissecting mosquitoes with a razor blade! This new understanding led to more directed treatment, and, ultimately, a Nobel Prize for Ross. Rocco's diagram of the life cycle of the parasite suggests the complexity of the problem of diagnosis and therapy.
Rocco concludes with a reminder that malaria identified is not malaria eliminated. It kills millions of children every year and prostrates whole communities. South American forests were denuded by exploiters seeking the bark. The synthetics developed proved a temporary solution since the parasite appears to have evolved resistance to them. Today's chief source of natural quinine is a threatened forest in war-torn central Africa. She describes the travails of a firm struggling to maintain supply. The picture would be encouraging if the firm obtained support from industrial nations. That hasn't been forthcoming.
Rocco's opening sentence, "My grandparents had been married for many years when they left Europe for Africa - although not to each other" sets the tone of this book. Her personalised narrative form skips the use of footnotes, but there are Notes on Sources and a Further Reading list. A collection of photos and maps adds reference. Splendid Overview Of The Search For Malaria's Cure
By John Kwok
Fiammetta Rocco's "The Miraculous Fever-Tree" is yet another contemporary example of the popular science treatise exemplified by Dava Sobel's "Longitude" and Simon Winchester's "Krakatoa" and "The Map That Changed The World". Ms. Rocco, the literary editor of the Economist, takes us on a globe-spanning, centuries-long odyssey in search of Malaria's cure, quinine, distilled from the bark of the South American cinchona tree. It is a moving, elegant look at the age of discovery and exploration, vividly recounting how the discovery and use of cinchona bark, and then later, its chemical derivative, quinine, allowed Western imperial states such as Spain and Great Britain to colonize vast tracts of South America, Africa and Asia. She also offers a fascinating glimpse into malaria's deadly impact on Allied and Axis military forces during World War Two. And she elegantly weaves in her own personal struggle with malaria, which she contracted during her late adolescence/early adulthood in Kenya. Rocco's crisp prose is as eloquent as those from Sobel and Winchester. Without question, this is among the finest books on popular science and medicine published in the past year.

From Publishers Weekly
"Like a Mad magazine satire in both its illustration style and intent," said PW, "this urban take on Child's pastoral ditty pokes fun at tradition." Ages 4-7. (Sept.)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 4-Recalling a simpler time, this book captures the poem's sense of excitement and celebration. Readers who join the family en route to Grandfather's house will observe many details about life in the 19th century. As the sleigh traverses river and woods, parents and son greet fellow New England villagers who, bundled against the cold, are at work and at play. The toe-stinging, nose-biting chill of the trip is finally broken when they arrive at the grandparents' warm house and seat themselves at the overflowing table. For those who tend to hum the words after the first two lines, all six verses, as well as the score, are printed on the endpapers. A brief note describes the poem's origin. Manson's woodcuts, painted in the colors of a snowy evening, lovingly depict the wintry countryside. In contrast, the indoor scenes are diffused with the warm shades of the season. The mood of this edition far outshines recent efforts (Normand Chartier's version [S&S, 1990] features a greeting-card family of anthropomorphized bunnies). Like the poem itself, this title promises to have wide and ageless appeal.
Lisa S. Murphy, Dauphin County Library System, Harrisburg, PA
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Ages 4^-7. A familiar favorite, already available in several picture-book editions, takes a manic turn with Catrow's illustrations. The family bound for Thanksgiving dinner are New Yorkers driving through holiday traffic in an effort to get to grandfather's house. (At the beginning, the text says "grandfather," though at the end it is grandmother who is highlighted.) The youngest child falls out of the van, takes a ride on a hansom-cab horse, and then bounces through Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, getting sucked into a tuba and pulled through the sky by a float. Eventually, both family and child arrive in the country: the family by car, the boy gliding down from the air. The art is big, busy, occasionally garish, and filled with funny images. Kids will enjoy looking at this once. Twice might be pushing it. Ilene Cooper

WONDERFUL BOOK BUT THERE HAS BEEN A HORRIBLE MISTAKE HERE BY AMAZON AND THE BUYER SHOULD BECAREFUL
By D. Blankenship
First, let me address an issue; a problem if you will, as to this book and the reviews here. Somehow, between Amazon and Publishers Weekly there has been a grave error made. If you read the product description from PW you will find that they have reviewed the wrong book. Their review is of a book with a similar title,Over The River and Through the Woods [..] which was written by Lydia Marie Child and illustrated by David Catrow. You will note that some of the customer's reviews, in particular the three star reviews, have all been directed toward the Child book. This is not the fault of the reviewers because the various links Amazon has provided bounce the customer back and forth between the two books; the Catrow book and the one being reviewed here written by Lydia Maria Child and illustrated by Brinton Turkle. Amazon has mixed these two books up...I do not know how they did it as the ISBN numbers are different, but did it they did. While I have not read it, the Catrow book, (1999) is an urban spoof, as I understand it, on the original song and quite a different animal that what we are dealing with in the Child book. Whether or not it is a good book or not...I haven't a clue as I have never laid eyes on it.

Anyway, the work being reviewed here is by Maria Child and was published by Scholastic Inc. in 1974.
It consists of some wonderful illustrations by Brinton Turkle depicting an old fashion Thanksgiving dinner at what is probably just before the turn of the last century. There are no cars...it is all horse and buggy; wood stoves, horse drawn sleds, long skirts and home cooked food. Some of these illustrations are in black and white (which is very effective) and others in color. All are skillfully executed.

The text of this work consists of the words to the old song..,"Over the River, an Through the Woods." It is designed so that the reader can sing along with the illustrations which fit perfectly.

This is an ideal work to be used during the Thanksgiving Season and most certainly could be used during Christmas also.

This is an excellent work and I hope that people are not put off by the mix-up here.

Hilarious pictures, all the lyrics to sing along
By songlover1
I just bought this book for my 2nd grade music classes because I've been using a copy from the library for the last 3 years, and my students all LOVE this book. The pictures have a story unto themselves: a family is driving by the Macy's parade as they leave town for their grandparents' house, the baby crawls out the window during a traffic jam, gets tossed about through the parade, rides some balloons, and ends up safely delivered to Grandmother's house just in time for the family to arrive and eat a traditional dinner together... except the baby steals the pumpkin pie. Kids just shriek with laughter when they aren't busy singing, and (most important to their music teacher) they remember the song later because they had such fun learning it. They beg to read this book again and again, but I only do it at Thanksgiving, so it's a big treat. ;-) Many thanks to the illustrator.

Engaging, real-life math skills!
By G. Edwards
When I paged through this book at the library, it was hard to tell what it was about. I'm so glad I brought it home and read it to my nine-year-old son. It has an engaging story (how to best count mall shoppers entering from four different entrances) and clearly teaches math-adding strategies (like various ways to add a group like 8, 7, 9 and 8 quickly in your head). He was completely enthused with it, and I'm figuring out how to best procure the rest of the series. The funny thing about math is that it is a skill that we need and use in adult life, but it is taught in such a needlessly obscure way in school. With the way many kids learn, it needs to be connected to realistic circumstances for the information to be retained, and this book does that. We also love the Life of Fred series. The more the better! Such a pleasure to see math done well. The rest of the titles can be browsed at http://www.mathstart.net/books.html.

Disappointing Life-Story of a Great Actor
By Dr. Laurence Raw
Ruth Gordon was one of America's greatest stage actors, whose lengthy career began in the early Twenties and continued for six decades. She dominated the Broadway stage as a performer and writer, and made memorable appearances in London, notably in 1936 in THE COUNTRY WIFE directed by Tyrone Guthrie. In 1973 she achieved late-career fame as the costar in Hal Ashby's cult movie HAROLD AND MAUDE.

Given her achievements, MY SIDE turns out to be something of a disappointment. Written in quasi-diary style, it comprises a collection of anecdotes with a penchant towards name-dropping. There is little insight into the author's psychology; nor does she analyze in any detail why she became such a noted performer. Instead she structures the book as a series of conversations, which either reveal her to have a prodigious memory for what people said up to fifty years previously, or (perhaps more plausibly) show her to be something of a fabricator. The book itself resembles an extended chat-show conversation with anecdote following anecdote. It is an entertaining volume to dip into, but one wishes for so much more.

Fantastic!
By neverwithoutespresso
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I have read it at least 4 times and I know I will read it lots more. A word of advice: Ms. Gordon's style is unique; it took me several pages the first time I read the book to "get into" the rhythm and style, but I found that after that, I enjoyed reading the book very much, so much so that I found myself swept up in the world of the nineteen teens and twenties and the breathless excitement of a young woman courageously pursuing her dream of becoming an actress. I felt I was right there and her friends Alexander Woollcott, Thornton Wilder, Jeanne Eagles, Harpo Marx, Edith Evans, and dozens more leading theatrical and literary lights. The rosetta stone for enjoying this remarkable text is to understand that the author is writing as though she is having a very informal conversation with you, one in which she skips from one time period to another, oftentimes many times, in a single chapter; she does the same with subject matter. Read carefully and be rewarded!

Great character - exciting times
By ConstantReader
I'm surprised the previous two reviewers read this book if the characters mentioned in it were unknown. If you're too young or uninformed to know who Alexander Woolcott, Thornton Wilder, Booth Tarkinton, Katherine Cornell, Charles Laughton, or Elsa Lanchester were, don't bother to read the book. It will be way over your head. My main quibble with this book, is that there is very little detail about the numerous famous people mentioned in it, except in a name-dropping way - i.e. "I played cards with . . . ., I saw . . . ., I was in Peter Pan with . . .The book reads like a compilation of (carefully edited) personal diary entries. Aside from being the likliest way for Ms. Gordon to remember exact words and details from 60 years earlier, it also has a stream of consciousness short phrasing that gives little depth to the people she writes about. Even the most famous are no more than names written on a page, even though Ms. Gordon obviously knew them very well. There's also very little insight into her own actions, or those of those nearest to her. She mentions adultery with someone who makes an appearance for about two sentences and fades away never to be mentioned again. What was that all about? An affair with Jed Harris that resulted in her only child is barely remarked on. Considering the facts that Harris was a famous (and famously hated) producer, his child with Gordon resulted in his divorce, after which he refused to marry Gordon while publicly admitting his paternity (and in the 1930's!), one would think she'd have more to say about it. What about her 43 year marriage to the love of her life, Garson Kanin, who was 16 years her junior? Not much said there either. The only thing she talks about with any depth are the number of plays she was in, her near misses with the casting couch in her early years, and how well or how badly she thought she did professionally. One gets the impression of a selfish hedonist - but it's hard to believe that's all there was to her. I would love to read a more objective and detailed biography of an obviously interesting and charming woman.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up This selection of ten horrifying ghost stories celebrates the traditions of the genre. Three of the tales take place in haunted houses where fearsome spirits materialize and terror grips the hardy souls who dare to spend the night, and two describe restless spirits, new to the world of the dead, who try to communicate with the living. In others, an evil child can invoke a ghastly monster; a young man's long hair attracts a malevolent, invisible spirit; and an ugly creature, ``old Fillikin'' inhabits a well and responds to a schoolboy's wish. There is even a coachman who, plying his trade along the Old North Road, encounters ``Nancy Tucker's Ghost'' with surprising results. Five of the stories are by Chambers himself; four others, by Joan Aiken, Jan Mark, Lance Salway, and John Gordon were commissioned for an earlier anthology; and the collection is capped by Chambers' adaptation of a fine tale by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. All are distinguished by good writing. Altogether, the volume will provide pleasure and a source of real-aloud tales for lovers of ghosts and spirits. All My Mothers and Fathers: A Memoir, by Michael Blumenthal

Shortly after his mother dies of breast cancer when he is ten years old, author Michael Blumenthal discovers a startling fact: His mother was not his biological mother, and his aunt and uncle, immigrant chicken farmers living in Vineland, New Jersey, are really his parents. As fate would have it, his father, a German-Jewish refugee raised by a loveless and embittered stepmother after his own mother died in childbirth, has inflicted on his adoptive son a fate uncannily -- and terrifyingly -- similar to his own: Having first adopted Michael, in part, to help his dying wife, he then imposes on him the same sort of penurious and loveless stepmother whom he had to survive. With these revelations, the "mysteries" that seem to have permeated Michael's childhood are laid bare, triggering a quest for belonging that will infiltrate the author's entire adult life. All My Mothers and Fathers is Michael Blumenthal's moving and powerful account of how he put his life together, and made both a break from and peace with his past.

From Publishers Weekly
Poet and novelist Blumenthal's biological parents, New Jersey chicken farmers, gave him away at birth to his uncle and aunt, Holocaust survivors who raised him as their own son in Manhattan. He learned this when he was 10, the year his adoptive mother died. "The truth is," he writes in this memoir, "I have had two of everything two mothers, two fathers, two siblings, two versions of manhood, two homes. And all I want is to have one." After his adoptive mother's death, his adoptive father remarried an uncaring woman who "may have damaged forever my ability to love as I would choose my ability, even, to love myself the way an intact human being should." Blumenthal (Dusty Angel; When History Enters the House: Essays from Central Europe) is a deft storyteller, relating his desire for belonging, despite the trying environment, but his memoir is distorted by rage and self-pity. His stepmother, for example, is one of the "women who, cumulatively, never showed me a minute of anything that could conceivably pass for a mother's love." His adoptive father flirts with stereotype, a passive old Jewish man who mutters, "God loves you and so do I," endlessly. With the exception of a sharp account of the author's second wife, the book is cast with ciphers, while the author's own needs and grievances emerge almost too vividly, as when he writes, "Neither man nor animal nor saint nor God... can help me shoulder the burden of my parents." Agent, Lane Zachary.

From Library Journal
Blumenthal, a poet and director of Harvard's creative writing program, has written the touching story of his search for his true identity. After he was born, his biological parents left him to be raised by his aunt and uncle; it was not until later that he discovered that his "parents" were in reality not his birth mother and father. After the woman who raised him died of cancer, his adopted father married again, and this unloving stepmother made his life extremely difficult. Although many of the events in Blumenthal's memoir are traumatic, his narrative is filled with humor. In the final sections, with the deaths of his two fathers and stepmother, the mood changes, and his thoughts on his heritage as well as his legacy to his own son are reflective and deeply moving. Adding to the book's pleasures are selections from Blumenthal's poems that relate to the events and moods of the narrative. Recommended for all public libraries. Morris Hounion, Ursula C. Schwerin Lib., NYC Technical Coll., Brooklyn

From Booklist
Blumenthal tries to shed light on his shadowy past, which featured many hallmarks of a Grimms' fairy tale: switched identities, an introspective only child, and not one but two evil stepmothers. At 10, he learned that his recently deceased mother wasn't his real mother; she was his aunt. His "aunt" and "uncle" on a New Jersey farm were his biological parents. His faux father, Julius, had suffered from a hostile, grasping stepmother, yet he subjected 11-year-old Michael to the same predicament. He married a "rich widow" who was so cheap she told Julius' relatives to give Michael kitchen appliances for his Bar Mitzvah, and whose jealous resentment of her stepson was such that her only involvement with him consisted of finding him, then underage to be working, illegal jobs as far from home as possible. But time passes, perspectives alter, the world and the old neighborhood change, and Blumenthal's message and his source of comfort seem to be that love endures. Whitney Scott
