BEETLE MCGRADY EATS BUGS

Megan McDonald

The debut of an exuberant new picture book character from the best–selling author of the Judy Moody series.

Beetle McGrady dreams of being an explorer like Marco Polo or a pioneer like Amelia Earhart. She dreams of being brave and daring, and she will begin by ... eating an ant.

It's dare double dare on the school playground, but will Beetle be able to live up to her dreams? Face to face –– or Beetle to ant –– will she be able to

bite and chew and ... swallow? Gulp!

If she does, what will the ant taste like? If she does, will the ant be crunchy or squishy? And if she can't, does that mean she's a chicken?

Survivor-Like Challenge at Elementary School
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Although young Beetle McGrady yearns for the adventure and fame achieved by Amelia Earhart, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Marco Polo, all she gets is a dare to eat an ant during "Fun with Food Week." She decides that eating insects is pretty mundane, especially when she just can't get one past her mouth. All this changes when Chef Suzanne, the Paul Prudhomme of insect cuisine, comes to school with such delights as toasted cricket, Chinese chop-suey ants, grasshopper tacos, and Mexican stinkbug salsa! In a truly gross-out scene, Beetle is shown with a cricket leg sticking out of her mouth, with another speared cricket on the way. Beetle's adventuresome spirit (and hardcore stomach) earns her the pioneer status that she craved.

Jane Manning's prose captures the free-flowing rhythms of the school day, and the kids' talk is realistic, including both good-natured teasing and supportive reassurance. The story is on the frenetic side, especially with the arrival of the zany chef Suzanne, and there's a madcap tangle of bugs and kids after her arrival. The writing is generally fun to read:

"She closed her eyes. She, Beetle McGrady, set the itchy-twitchy, buggly-wuggly ant on the tip of her tongue. The ant was tickly. The ant was creepy. The ant was crawly. If she ate the ant, she would be a real explorer. A true pioneer. Beetle A-for-Anteater McGrady!"

McDonald also includes some fun-with-food humor. Roger calls falafel "Awful-awful," Lacey claims that succotash gives you a rash, and, in a statement so precise and egocentric that it rings especially true, Mona complains that "Fish eggs smell like caviar."

Jane Manning `s exaggerated drawings of Suzanne and the fleshy, big-faced kids have a "Mad Magazine" look, and she spares little in her depictions of cooked bugs. Still, the book is not entirely consistent. Beetle's fun tips on eating bugs ("Can't eat a mealworm? Close your eyes and pretend it's spaghetti--slurp!") contrast with pictures of smiling bugs holding anti-bug eating protest signs. Only those who like a fairly high gross-out factor will enjoy viewing the insect dishes and McGrady's eating. Moreover, while this is a silly, obviously far-fetched yarn, the repeated connection between bug eating and self-esteem is a reach. Still, there is an audience for juvenile culinary adventures--just try to make sure you know yours before sampling this one!

Fun, whimsical, not to be taken seriously
By bebe
My daughter loves this book. I like it myself because the main character is spunky and not a girlie-girl worshipping the almighty Disney Princesses. The drawings are so vivid and comical, and the story is very funny. Who cares what Laura Ingalls Wilder ACTUALLY ate, this is not to be taken seriously. It's not meant to be a documentary on the American prairie eating habits. Just watching my toddler say "icky" out loud when Beetle McGrady spits out the ant..is worth it: you can tell that she is really engaged while I read the story. No, I'm not worried that she will try to eat bugs. If you want to take everything seriously: to me, it's a story of being more open-minded about the customs of people from other cultures.

Disgusting and inaccurate
By Amazon Customer
Reading this book to my daughter made me want to gag. Thankfully it was a library book. Also, the book says that Laura Ingalls Wilder at cricket pie. She ate BLACKBIRD pie, not cricket pie! (a much less disgusting choice in my book)

An all too brief glimpse of Genius
By S. A Troutt
There was a greatness there in these women, in that time. They loved Paris and France and the freedom and the people they met there. They came alive living and loving in a city that seemed to inspire them to certain greatness. Poets, writers, artists their talents ran the gamut of art.
For some, their fame was brief - Bryher, H.D. even Djuna Barnes are mere footnotes now if they noted at all. Others, Natalie Barney, Dolly Wilde are notorious for Who they were ..not What they actually did.
Janet Flanner and Mina Loy are names that some might dimly recall. And there is Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas, who came to personify 'the special relationship' that bound them so tightly together.
The specialness of this book is the use of so much 'private' writing - what they wrote and thought of each other in their own words. The writing is brilliant introspective provocative and sometimes banal. Gertrude wanted to be published, Thelma loved Djuna years after their breakup and Janet managed to stay friends with everyone. There are many photos as well, lavishly illustrated is not an understatement here.
If there is a quibble, a minor one, the book is all too short, I wished it had been longer. Shari Benstock's "Women of the Left Bank' is a more in-depth look at the same women and time, tho with a stronger emphasis on the sexual nature of the relationships. But this is a well written and very readable book.
Update. I have now seen the movie 'Paris was a Woman' I would recommend both as companion pieces. But I would read the book before I saw the movie.

Paris through female eyes
By C. H.
Profusely illustrated and painstakingfully researched, this book is an enlightening account of women who between wars found their self and their own voice in Paris. Though mostly concerned with the stories of lesbian or bisexual women such as Colette, Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, Sylvia Beach, Djuna Barnes and Natalie Barney who came to the City of Light attracted by an aura of unbridled freedom missing in their places of origin, this book will appeal to all those who are interested in this fascinating early period of the twentieth century as well.

Amazon.com Review
From his humble beginnings in a small log cabin, young Abe Lincoln knew "that being tall is not enough to make your way in this world." He worked hard on a flatboat, in a general store, and then studying to become a lawyer, eventually making his way into politics. Along the way he married and had three boisterous sons: "They were like balls bounding down a road, and people said they had no manners or discipline. I thought happiness more important than manners, though I didn't like it when Tad drove his cart and goats down the White House hall." Deeply relieved when the Civil War is over, Abe Lincoln is finally ready to be happy on the fateful night that he sets out to Ford's Theater to see a play with his wife.

The focus of this simple picture book is not on Lincoln's death--the book concludes before Abe and Mary even leave the White House--but rather on the admirable life he led. Although many are well acquainted with the legendary story of young Abe's rough upbringing in Kentucky and his unquenchable thirst for learning, Ann Turner's fictionalized biography, told in a fresh and immediate first-person point of view, adds a sweet note of poignancy and humanity to one of America's greatest heroes. With his historically accurate paintings, award-winning illustrator Wendell Minor captures the expressions and experiences of a man who, at the conclusion of the war, sees "how sorrow has dug lines in my cheeks." (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Minor's (Red Fox Running) stately, lifelike paintings and Turner's (Learning to Swim) anecdotal narrativeAwritten in the conversational voice of LincolnAshape an insightful portrait of this leader. The author chronologically organizes the text into accessible vignettes, each accompanied by a finely detailed illustration marked by sharp, nearly photographic definition. Turner emphasizes Lincoln's fascination with words and learning with well-chosen similes (as a lawyer, "I practiced my cases out loud as I walked,/ learning how to use words/ like a leading rein on a colt/ to take people where I wanted"), and stresses his early commitment to end slavery, his unwavering ethics and his profound anguish at the destruction and death caused by the Civil War. Cheerful moments inject some levity into the volume, as when Lincoln describes Mary Todd, the woman who would become his wife ("She was bright and brave/ like a flag cracking in the wind,/ all color, rustle, and shine"), and his son Tad's habit of driving his cart and goats through the White House hall. This well-rounded volume ends on an affecting, ironic note: As Lincoln and his wife "wait to go see a play," he thinks back on his childhood log cabin, reflecting on "how much has come to pass since then. How much there is still to be done." Ages 6-9. (Jan.)
Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Crisp, richly colored paintings accompany somber prose in this dreamy evocation of Lincoln's life and accomplishments, narrated in the first person by a mature president in the White House before an evening at the theater. The fictional memoir broadly describes the man's life from his youth in a Kentucky log cabin to the end of the Civil War; a concluding two-page historical note fills in some factual gaps and appraises readers of Lincoln's fate at the hands of John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater. Vivid full-page illustrations provide counterpoint to islands of verse; a rendering of Lincoln's signature and simple colonial drawings unify the text pages. The striking cover illustration of Lincoln framed in the doorway of a log cabin is memorable. Factual picture books for children are often betwixt and between, neither read casually nor sought as research material for reports. If properly placed, Abe Lincoln Remembers can satisfy both camps, though the solemnity of the presentation favors its use as an American history resource.-Mary Ann Carcich, Mattituck-Laurel Public Library, Mattituck, NY

Remembering Lincoln
By Roz Levine
It is April, 1865, the Civil War has just ended and Abe Lincoln is sitting in the White House waiting for his wife, Mary, to finish dressing. This is a happy night and the Lincoln's are going to Ford's Theater to see a play. As Lincoln patiently waits, he thinks back over his life, his simple upbringing and how he made his way to the presidency...from the small log cabin in Kentucky with only one window, to his love of learning and going to law school, to entering politics and finally becoming president, to believing in one country, whole, not half slave, half free..... Ann Warren Turner's eloquently written "fictional biography" and Wendell Minor's beautifully expressive and detailed artwork combine to capture your youngster's imagination with poignant, quiet emotion and moving, understated text. Historical notes at the end fill in the rest of the story, including Lincoln's assassination and can be used to augment lessons and enhance discussions. Abe Lincoln Remembers is a beautifully written, thoughtful story, perfect for youngsters 5-9 and makes a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

Great Kids' History
By Ted Ficklen
This is a wonderful biography for children, especially for children who are already familiar with Lincoln's story. The illustrations are superb, the best since the Daulaire's Caldecott Medal-winning biography of 1957. Wendell Minor's paintings humanize Lincoln without sacrificing that essentail iconic quality we usually expect in a Lincoln portrait.

Here the delicate art of torn tissue collages paradoxically captures the ferocity, thunder and surprising swiftness of ancient dinosaurs. Bountiful, panoramic illustrations on fold-out flaps engulf a limited text. "If dinosaurs came back to live with us today" introduces the comparison of saurian characteristics to those of contemporary billy goats, crocodiles, ostriches and a parade of familiar animals. (The juxtaposition of pets and barnyard animals with the extravagant dinosaurs will tickle the youngest readers.) While this sound teaching technique will help youngsters to recognize and remember dinosaur types, the book's chief attraction is its art. Mullins's multi-textured compositions educe a lively, three-dimensional quality emphasizing the motion and majesty of these ever-intriguing creatures. Ages 3-7.

Worthwhile addition to the dino collection
By saliero
Very brightly illustrated, and factually informative. Can be used with the very youngest dino fans (and the bug seems to set in earlier and earlier!).
Many pages are fold-out, which provides a terrific effect for butting head-to-head Pachycephalosauruses and a marvellous parade featuring a Diplodocus, and a marvellous upright Brachiosaurus)
The book compares some attributes of dinos with existing animals, so comparison is introduced (angrier, longer, crueler, faster, louder, eat more, taller, smaller, bigger)
Shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia for the Eve Pownall award for Information Books.
The dinos are from North and Central America and Europe. I would have liked a couple of Aussie dinos included.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of TV's 1960s science fiction series Star Trek will go into orbit over lead player Shatner's candid, captivating reminiscence, packed with stellar anecdotes and backstage lore. Writing with help from MTV editorial director Kreski, Shatner reveals details of day-to-day work--and some of the fights with nervous studio executives who were not quite ready for the future. Problematic were writer/producer Gene Roddenberry's proposal that the starship's strong, efficient first officer, "Number One," be played by a woman, namely Majel Barrett who later became the softer, secondary character Nurse Chapel; the casting of Leonard Nimoy as the pointy-eared alien Dr. Spock; and the interracial kiss scripted for Shatner and Nichelle Nichols. We learn that every episode was filmed in the "ridiculously inadequate timespan" of six days, with one week for preproduction, creating excessive pressure on many actors and members of the film crew. Aided by recollections of other cast members, Shatner's memoir covers everything from turf wars to special effects in an appealing, humorous tone. Illustrations include stills, photos and drawings of sets.

From Library Journal
In his seventh book since 1989 and first nonfiction work, Shatner ( Tek Vengence, LJ 1/93) provides the long-awaited history of the original Star Trek series. He recounts the series in intricate detail, from its inception to its premature demise in 1969. Through dozens of interviews and 130 never-before-seen photos, he describes the cerebral creation, multifaceted production, Emmy Award-winning special effects, and incredibly innovative process of writing, filming, and editing for which the series is legendary. In addition, he remains true to his goal of giving credit where it is due, which serves to enhance both the final product and Shatner's stature as a writer. Much of the book centers around Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek 's original creator, whom Shatner claims was "brilliant, absolutely incontrovertibly brilliant." These memories will fascinate die-hard fans and leave them thirsty for more. Recommended for sf and television collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/93.

From Kirkus Reviews
Finally, the Captain's Log that a zillion Trekkers have been waiting for. This isn't an omnibus Star Trek history. Shatner (a.k.a. Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise) and Kreski (editorial director of MTV) stick to Stardate mid-1960's and the original TV series, skipping both the Star Trek movies (presumably the subject of a future Shatner memoir) and the multiple series spinoffs. No matter; what remains is a fascinating account of network TV in its post-Beaver, pre-Bunker teenage years. Shatner works against his reputation for hogging the limelight (which he confronts head-on in the final chapter) by remaining off-camera for the first quarter of the text while recounting Gene Roddenberry's early Hollywood career and the making of the pilot, the ``absolutely, incontrovertibly brilliant'' The Cage. Tidbits tumble forth: at first Roddenberry envisioned a Captain Robert April at the helm of the USS Yorktown, with a half-Martian ``satanic'' Mr. Spock at his side. As the high concept took flesh, a fight arose among studio executives over Spock: How important should he be? What should his ears look like?-- questions that attained even greater importance when, to everyone's bewilderment, the mind-melding Vulcan bested Kirk as the focus of the Trekker cult. Soon the rest of the cast signed on, along with ace producer Gene Coon, whom Shatner praises to the detriment of icon Roddenberry: ``Roddenberry created Star Trek, and Coon made it fly.'' Shatner's favorite program (``The Devil in the Dark''), Leonard Nimoy's clashes with management, why laser-guns became ``phasers'': there's enough here to satiate the most avid Trekker, delivered with pop and pizazz. After just three years, a tired cast called it quits, or so they thought. Today, Star Trek prospers, and so will this memoir- -most probably at warp speed. A lively, inside account of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES, its making and its people
By Solipso
William Shatner's STAR TREK MEMORIES is my favorite account of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES. I have also read BEYOND UHURA (Nichelle Nichols), TO THE STARS (George Takei), I AM SPOCK (Leonard Nimoy), and UP TIL NOW (William Shatner). Each of those four books is an autobiography, though Nimoy's is only minimally so. They also contain much material about the productions of both the original TV series and the six original-series movies. STAR TREK MEMORIES, on the other hand, focuses exclusively on the original TV series, though when discussing the people involved, it sometimes strays from the studio. It barely mentions the movies, and it is not an autobiography. Which, since I am more a fan of STAR TREK than of autobiography, is why I favor this book.

Countless years ago, I also read THE MAKING OF STAR TREK, by Stephen E. Whitfield and Gene Roddenberry. Though my memories of that reading are only of diagrams and salt shakers, I cannot imagine it being anywhere near as interesting as STAR TREK MEMORIES. Whitfield's book may have some technical details that Shatner omits, but Shatner does not neglect technicalities. He writes about scripting, camera work, lighting, special effects, props, models, budgeting, and probably some other things that I forget. Yet the book is mostly about people.

He mentions the lighting crew, the guy who wired the bridge, the guy who made the phasers, and the guy who designed the set. But the story is really about STAR TREK producers, directors, writers, and cast, and the more prominent the person is, the more attention Shatner gives him. He gives a brief biography of Gene Roddenberry, including the quasi myth about how Gene acquired an agent. And he says a good deal about other important STAR TREK men; for example, Robert Justman, Gene Coon, and Fred Freiberger. Though it is only fair that Shatner and Leonard Nimoy receive more attention than other cast members, all who played reasonably prominent roles are mentioned: Majel Barrett, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, and Grace Lee Whitney. For me, the most striking bit of information was about Whitney, who played the photogenic blond yeoman Janice Rand.

Like Nimoy and Nichols, Shatner is too free with superlatives such as "wonderful," "great," "certainly," "absolutely," and "extremely." Maybe that's because actors and actresses are emoters, not thinkers. But most readers do not want to be bothered with such literary finery. A more serious condemnation is the absence of an index, which would accommodate readers wishing to refer back to all this inside-Star-Trek information. Still, this book contains so many good things, I do not want to diminish it in the eyes of the many persons who I am sure would be interested in reading it. Therefore, five stars.

This Is What You Need
By GameraRocks
After reading this book, I was able to tell that William Shatner knows how to write! Not that I had any doubts, but this book is so intriguing, it feels like he is talking to me as a friend while I read. This is written like a documentary, and it is just as interesting. There are facts in here that I never knew, and stories are told about things that happened in front of and behind the camera. About the smallest detail of how Star Trek works that you wanted to know is talked about. Shatner not only talks about and interviews the cast, but the behind the scenes set builders and script writers among other people that are revealed and talked about.

The book is written in a light hearted, joking way, with Shatner making fun of himself and having fun at other people's expense. The only problem I had is that the book also kind of brags on how great Shatner is, and how many problems some of the other cast members had while filming. Coming from the man who wrote the book, it feels kind of like an ego trip since it occurs many times throughout the read. There is also a very nice collection of pictures that are on some of the pages that shows behind the scenes laughs and on set memorable scenes. Overall, this is a book I recommend to all fans. It hardly ever gets dull and by the end, it feels too short and could have lasted longer.

A Book any "Original Series" Fan Should Own
By Robert M. Topolski
Star Trek "The Original Series" originally aired in the late 1960s but really picked up its base of fans in syndication.

This book is the recount of star William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk) of how the series came to be, the struggles, the relationships, the victories, and ultimately the cancellation of the series.

Some myths are confirmed while others are completely busted. The jokes on the set were beyond belief, yet the first TV interracial kiss was a fake. Did you know that the men of "The Menagerie" were all women? The book is full of set drawings by Matt Jeffries and first-person interjections by Magel Roddenberry, Nichelle Nicholes, Leonard Nimoy, and many others. William Shatner is helped by Chris Kreski in telling the tales of the series that broke into frontiers where none had gone before.

The retelling is warm and welcoming, heart-felt and sometimes regretful, and in all respects easy to read and embrace. It's the first book I've read from cover to cover in over a year and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Clever Coyote thinks it's time for lunch –– and also time to show her friends how, with some simple rounding, she can add up numbers in her head. If only she were as good at hunting as she is at math!

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3--Taking a fun approach to math, this book introduces the concept of rounding to estimate the sum of several numbers. A group of coyotes stands in front of a desert ranch and wonders how many roadrunners live in the area. They split up, and each one counts the ones that he or she sees. When they are ready to add their numbers, Clever Coyote rounds each figure to the nearest 10, adds them together, and quickly comes up with a close approximation of the actual total. The procedure is repeated with lizards and grasshoppers. Humorous watercolor cartoons depict the action and clarify the concept. Charts help to illustrate how each number is rounded. Factoids about coyotes and other desert creatures appear throughout, so readers learn not only math, but also get their fair share of science sprinkled into the mix. A section entitled "Adults and Kids" includes math games, book suggestions, and ideas for turning grocery shopping into an estimating experience.--Sandra Kitain, Abrams Hebrew Academy, Yardley, PA

4 1/2* Round Up!
By M. Allen Greenbaum
A group of coyotes wearing bright Hawaiian shirts (and a non-conformist in plaid) satisfy their mathematical and gustatory appetites in this clever "Mathstart" series book (Level 2; ages 6 and up). The Coyotes -- Clever, Cool, Careful, Clumsy, and young Little One--look out over the desert from the porch of their ranch. There are roadrunners everywhere, but no subpoenas. (The book judiciously omits crates labeled "ACME" label, or coyotes named "Wile E.") "'There must be hundreds of them!' said Cool Coyote." The coyotes separate to verify this, but Clever Coyote (after failing to catch a running roadrunner) claims, "I bet I can do it in my head and come really close." When Clever Coyote rounds the individual number counts to the nearest ten and adds them, his estimate is only two more than the actual count. In similar fashion, the coyotes compare their counts and rounded estimates of tasty grasshoppers and zebra-tailed lizards.

Steve Bjorkman paints his desert with soft shades of purple and dotted browns. Large green cacti break up this landscape, and the Hawaiian-shirted coyotes (wearing shades, sipping lemonade, chasing prey) give a playful air to the rounding lesson. Bjorkman's splashy, colorful style extends to the lizards, one of which peers at the reader from the bottom of the page. There's one very annoying discontinuity; however, and it's not possible to tell whether this is due to the illustrator, author, and/or publisher. On pp.14-15, Clever Coyote comments (about the lizards): "There can't be that many" and "Why don't you count them and see?" However, Clever Coyote is not pictured on the 2-page spread. One could also quibble over the implication that the coyotes' rounding is faster than adding. The book doesn't really compare adding rounded versus unrounded numbers, nor does it compare counting vs. estimating. As set up here, the coyotes' exact counts precede the rounding estimate; apparently, methods of estimating are beyond the book's scope.

Still, author Stuart J. Murphy presents the general topic clearly and in an entertaining manner. He gives the animals human personalities, while retaining--at least in Clever Coyote-their animal habits. On each spread, Murphy includes "factoids," information about coyotes and the desert environment (e.g., "Factoid: Roadrunners can fly, but they usually run. They can go as fast as 25 miles an hour.") These facts could lead to some interesting discussions about biomes, food chains, etc. The last two pages restate the rounding rules ("numbers that end in 5 or higher should be rounded up), and present several school and home activities to reinforce the concept.

Math concepts (rounding this time) in simple book format
By C. L. Yarborough
My children (ages 6 and 4) and I enjoy most of the Stuart J. Murphy Math Start books that we have read. In each one there is a single math concept taught in the format of a read aloud book.

In this book, several coyotes are discussing several other types of animals they see. One of them doesn't bother to count them. While the others are counting, this coyote tries to eat one of the animals. She is never successful. "She slunk. She crept. She jumped! She missed." But she always gets close when adding the numbers the other coyotes got, because she rounds. Adding by 10's is easy.

Great Series!

I love this series and have never been disappointed by any of the books. I do read-alouds to present concepts in Math, and these books are great for this! The kids love them and want to read them over and over!

May of these poems have been set to music for the first time, as they seem to ask to be sung as well as read. Some of the rollicking ones are not strictly lullabies, but aim to end the day with laughter and delight. These we call night songs. The collection does not pretend to be definitive; it simply celebrates the magic world of a happy, sleepy child.

Loved it as a child and I love it as a parent
By A Sailor
This is a very special book of lullabies and fun songs with fun drawings. I remember many of these songs from my mom singing them to me as a child and now I get to sing them to my little girl. I hunted and hunted for this book when I had a baby. My now two year old will frequently request it as our night time story book, so I she likes it too. It is worth hunting down.

which was inspired by the book Lullabies and Night Songs. The CD, "Holiday Songs and Lullabies," was given to me as a gift and I fell in love with it. It is one of my favorite Christmas albums. When I read the notes on the CD cover I discovered it had been inspired by this book. I am now in search of the book since it piqued my interest and I collect children's books. Absolutely wonderful collection of childhood songs
By A Customer
This collection of lullabies is wonderful, a must have for any parent or collector. Anyone who owns a copy of this book will tell you--It becomes a treasured heirloom. But what really makes this book priceless are the wonderful illustrations by Caldecott Award winner Maurice Sendak (of "Where the Wild Things Are" fame). They make the songs come alive, and your children will remember these songs fondly for the rest of their lives.
A perfect gift for the new parent or for yourself.

super biography
By Leigh
As a teacher, I found this book to be informative and grade-appropriate. Caplan brings history alive by vividly describing FDR's early life, political career, and presidential policies and actions. Since they are filled with photographs and activity sidebars, the pages are visually pleasing and easily capture the attention of young readers. This is a great overview of one of America's most influential presidents!

An Introduction to Theoretical Geomorphology, by C. Thorn

This book stems from the belief that undergraduate, and many graduate, students in geomorphology are taught far too little about the theoretical foundation of the discipline. This is a tragic oversight because all disci plines exist solely by virtue of a body of theory; furthermore, all substan tive research must, of necessity, be directed at improving this body of theory. While the centrality of theory is a characteristic of all science, it appears that it is fieldwork that has achieved sacrosanct status in geo morphology. The supreme standing of fieldwork would seem at first sight to be supported by such comments as that cited by Ager (1984, p. 42): "My old professor - the great H. H. Read - once said, 'The best geologist is, other things being equal, he who has seen the most rocks'. " The key issue in Read's comment is obviously "other things being equal"; what are these other things? For they will be just as applicable to geomorphology as to geology at large. One is certainly personal ability, but another critical com ponent is the individual's knowledge of relevant theory. Pursuit of theo retical knowledge is not generally a favored activity in geomorphology, a situation epitomized by Chorley's (1978, p. 1) one-liner: "Whenever anyone mentions theory to a geomorphologist, he instinctively reaches for his soil auger.

Features
  • As a concise introduction to the theoretical basis of modern geomorphology, this timely book is intended for all geomorphologists. It is not an abstruse contribution to theory, laced with mathematics, but a comprehensible and useful survey of the subject, encouraging readers to pursue geomorpholgy as a thinking before looking or digging discipline. The first part of the book is devoted to a series of individual topics or themes that are central to contemporary geomorphic theory. Beginning with an intellectual context for geomorphology against a background of science in general, the author proceeds to examine the various forms in which the subject appears as an academic discipline and concludes with a review of terminology and its links with theory. Chapters 5-8 then deal with the problems of time, space and scale, with chapter 9 providing a synthesizing conclusion to part one. Part two reviews models of landscape evolution, ranging from those of W.M. Davis to recent contributions by MJ Kirkby and others. All students of geomorphology will welcome this introduction to an aspect of their subject which could be said to have been neglected in recent years while empirical research has flourished. It is hoped that, by making the theoretical dimension of this lively part of the earth sciences more accessible, the importance of theory in geomorphology will once again be more widely acknowledged.

Review
`The concentration on theory will be welcomed by many geomorphologists and will encourage more research into theory. With a long list of references this will be a very useful book providing a good background to practical geomorphology.'
The Geographical Journal
`...a worthwhile book which, rightly, argues the essential place of theory. Colin Thorn has certainly provided a valuable service in introducing theory in a relatively digestible form...a highly readable introduction.'

Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom, by William Glasser

In his most important book since the bestselling Reality Therapy, Dr. William Glasser continues his break with traditional psychology. He offers a new psychology that, if practiced, could reverse our widespread inability to get along with one another, an inability that is the source of almost all unhappiness.

Take an honest look at your life, and you will see no evidence that your children will have happier marriages; that you and they will get along better; or that they will do better in school or at work than you, your parents or your grandparents. Dr. Glasser claims that, lacking good relationships, more and more people choose mental illness, psychosomatic disease, drug abuse, senseless violence and sex without any thought of love.

For progress in human relationships, he explains that we must give up the punishing, relationship-destroying external control psychology that is by far the dominant one in the world. For example, if you are in an unhappy relationship right now, your unhappiness is caused by one or both of you using external control psychology on the other.

But he goes further. If, for example, you are depressed, your misery is always related to a current unsatisfying relationship. Contrary to what you may believe, your troubles are always now, never in the past. No one can change what happened yesterday.

In one of this century's most significant books on psychology, Dr. Glasser offers choice theory, a non-controlling psychology that gives us the freedom to sustain the relationships that lead to healthy, productive lives. Through clear, vivid language and numerous examples, he makes this vital new psychology come alive. Learning it could change your life.

Amazon.com Review
Southern California psychiatrist William Glasser, the author of Reality Therapy, believes that almost all human misery is caused by people trying to control others. In fact, he says, the only behavior we can control is our own; by the same token, no one can make us do anything we don't want to. It's only when we give up spending our energy trying to force others to conform to our ideas or to keep them from doing the same to us that we are able to live the way we want to. Glasser makes this somewhat difficult material easier to understand with examples and case studies from his own practice. For instance, he tells a man whose wife has left him that his only choices are to change what he wants her to do or to change the way he is dealing with her. While doing these things will not necessarily bring his wife back, Glasser says, it will certainly make him feel better. "When we actually begin to realize that we can control only our own behavior, we immediately start to redefine our personal freedom and find, in many instances, that we have much more freedom than we realize," Glasser writes.

From Booklist
Glasser has worked with choice theory for half of his 40 years of psychiatric practice. Basically, choice theory helps its users avoid confrontation and ask pertinent questions. It sees conscious or unconscious desire for external control as the main problem in the four major personal relationships: husband-wife, parent-child, teacher-student, and manager-worker. If you think you can control others, it counsels, you are in for trouble, for the only person you can control is yourself. So all personal problems are both present problems and relationship problems. Glasser urges anyone in a relationship to ask, before taking a step, whether that step will keep the two related persons at least as close together as they are now; if it will, it may be worth taking. Combining choice theory and reality therapy in his practice, Glasser has been able to shorten the durations of his treatment programs substantially. As he presents them here, his theories and approaches can be applied in education and business as well as for self-help. William Beatty

From Kirkus Reviews
Feeling really blue lately? Sweeping aside decades of research on brain chemistry, Glasser concludes that you're not depressed; rather, you're choosing ``to depress.'' Much-published psychiatrist Glasser (Stations of the Mind: New Directions for Reality Therapy, 1981 , etc.) believes that choices about human relationships are at the heart of almost all psychological problems and that what governs such interactions is ``external control psychology.'' In other words, people generally try to coerce or manipulate others to achieve their goals. One of the more dubious tenets of his worldview is that most individuals believe ``it is right, it is even my moral obligation, to ridicule, threaten, or punish those who don't do what I tell them to do.'' Today, the author posits, relationships at home, work, and school should be characterized by a total absence of effort to control or even judge, that the focus should be on improving the relationship alone. This makes for an ultra-laissez-faire approach to much human interaction. For example, Glasser argues that failing students is inherently ``abusive,'' that a student who can't understand Shakespeare should be switched to James Herriot instead. Whatever happened to innovative approaches to learning, to teaching young people to persevere when facing difficulties? Granted, Glasser's pragmatic approach, which is elaborated in only the most general terms, may sometimes be more helpful than much psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. In general, however, this is a grating book, for the author makes grandiose claims on behalf of his one-dimensional theory (which happens not to be terribly new at all). And Glasser relentlessly touts choice theory, even envisioning, in a community he's trying to transform, ``homeless people getting together for dinner and a discussion of [this] book.'' Wouldn't it be better if the townspeople, and the country, chose instead to deal with the roots of homelessness? -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Choosing A Good Life
By I Review Things, OK?
It's hard to describe Dr. Glasser's work without it sounding like either intense psychological theory or trendy self-help philosophy. Choice Theory is at once both and neither of these things. You can use it as a clinical approach to human behavior, as I do in my practice, or as a guide to daily decision making, as I do in my personal life; it fits comfortably in both roles. Glasser's passing was a tremendous loss, but his work continues to heal and inspire.

a high point of 20th century talk-therapy
By Healing Toolbox
Along with Solution-focussed Brief Therapy, Choice Theory are the high points of 20th century talk-therapy. 21st century methods learn towards Energy Medicine, an animal of a different stripe. Glasser's wife updated Choice Theory book in 2015 with notes from Wm. Glasser and a new book title. The packaging is more commercial. I have not read the new version. Who has read both editions and can comment?

One of the best Self-Help Relationship books ever written
By Lester Harper
Dr. Glasser helps the reader to understand the differences between internal and external psychology. The book helps the reader identify that we behave from our internal needs for Love, Power, Fun and Freedom. The reader will learn that we cannot force another's behavior and the only behavior that we can control is his or her own. I think learning and understanding this concept lends itself to making a difference in producing healthy relationships versus unhealthy relationships. Of which unhealthy relationships are the product of the external psychology world of thinking. The external world psychology tells us that we can make people behave with punishment and coercion. Punishment and coercion fits the equation of vinegar - you can attract more bees with honey than vinegar. Dr. Glasser makes a point in the book that refers to how technology has advanced tremendously. Yet we have not put in the time to advance how we related with one another. This book will be a mainstay to improve and or enhance how we relate to each other. I recommended it very highly, as one of the best self-help books ever written.
